What Does FSC Certified Wood Mean?

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an intercontinental, non-governmental charitable organisation, formed in 1993 to encourage responsible management of all of the Earth’s forests. Different countries have divisions of the organisation operating in them.

The main benefit of the FSC is that forests are protected for generations to come and people know that when buying wood that’s FSC certified, they are not contributing to deforestation and climate change.

Deforestation is a large challenge for the world. If forests aren’t properly maintained, we will end up losing an irreplaceable and essential part of the world’s ecosystem. This not surprisingly would be a problem on a world level and one that we must avoid.

Illegal logging is one part of the problem. People desperate for money chop down virgin forest and clear trees faster than they can be replaced. No respect is given to local wildlife or native peoples that rely upon the forest for all of their requirements. Sad to say some of this timber will find its way into the UK where end users are sometimes ignorant as to where the timber has come from.

People can trust the FSC labelling of timber. The certification relates to forest management and chain of custody. A properly managed forest will be maintained with thought for wildlife, people and the environment and trees that have been cut down will be replaced by natural means or replanted. Parts of the forest will be protected from logging to protect the rare plants and animals that happen to be part of it and to protect holy sites of indigenous people. Workers will be acquired locally, trained properly and paid fairly.

The chain of custody tracks the movement of the timber from forest to end supplier. Every link along the way is tracked and certified to ensure that everyone is compliant with the FSC’s priciples.

People are able to see the FSC logo (a tree that has a tick) on anything from wooden furniture, paper and oak flooring to charcoal and venison.

If you’re purchasing wood or wooden producs, be certain that they contain the FSC logo and this means that you will be certain to have an environmentally sound product.

When shopping for wood products such as

oak flooring

, check for the FSC logo. Timber suppliers such as

Vastern Timber

have FSC certification.
