Carving Portraits Into A Pumpkin

When most of us think about pumpkin carvings, we generally think about the traditional carvings where you cutout the triangle eyes with the jagged smile. Although there is nothing wrong with these types of carvings, most people are unaware of the different ways to carve amazing looking pumpkins.

One method that can be used to create mind-blowing pumpkins is to carve a design into them using a template. If you are not familiar with using a template to carve a pumpkin, then you will be happy to know that it is a fairly easy skill to learn.

In a nut shell, a template is the negative image of a design. For example, let’s say you have a drawing of a black cat. On the template, the drawing of the cat would represent the area of the pumpkin that we would cutout. The image on the template is transferred to the pumpkin usually by first taping the template to the pumpkin. A punch or needle is then used to outline the design onto the pumpkin by punching a hole through the template and outer skin of the pumpkin. Finally, a carving saw is used to cutout the image into the pumpkin. Once you light up the pumpkin, the image of the cat will simply jump out at you.

Now, creating an image of a cat into a pumpkin is impressive but nothing is more impressive then carving a portrait of a person. The principles for carving basic images from templates still apply to portrait carving. Although the degree of difficulty increases, with a little practice just about anyone can carve and amazing portrait into a pumpkin.

Pumpkin Portraits

Pumpkin Portraits are just as they sound, a portrait of a person carved into a pumpkin. The key to creating amazing portraits in a pumpkin is using a technique called shading. If you already have some experience using templates for pumpkin carvings then you know there are basically two colors that a template creates, black and yellow (part of the pumpkin where the light shines through). Advanced templates, or portraits on the other hand use three colors; black, yellow, orange. The orange color is created by an effect called shading. Instead of cutting an image all the way through the pumpkin, you will use tools to shave the skin down. The thinner skin restrictively shines the light through creating a darker version of the yellow (orange in this case).

Although the process may appear difficult at first, carving a three layer pumpkin using the shading technique mentioned above really is not that difficult at all. The key is to start with a simple design and develop your skills from there.

The real beauty of pumpkin portraits is that you can use a permanent pumpkin, like a Fun-Kins pumpkin, to create the image one time and have a wonderful decoration to use for years to come. Portrait carving is fun, simple and a great way to add an amazing decoration for Halloween.

“Woofstock” dog festival in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

North America’s largest outdoor dog festival came back to Toronto last weekend for its fifth year. It ran from the 9th of June to the 10th of June at Toronto’s historical St. Lawrence Market. A Wikinews reporter was there on Sunday to report on some of the events that happened on the last day.

The “Woofstock” dog festival attracted as many as 140,000 people with their dogs. The festival had tons of accessories, sold under tents, to buy for dogs; food, toys, designer clothes, and more. About 400 vendors and exhibitors were there to promote their products, which also gave private dog companies or groups a chance to show their new products. The local SPCA and some animal rescues were under tents answering questions from visitors. While walking, all visitors could see the CN Tower and other very tall buildings.

One of the local TV stations, Citytv, was there. They hosted a live event at the show which was broadcast on TV. People came up on the stage and asked questions regarding their dogs and the host and co-host answered them.

A man, who called himself the “Chalk Master”, drew two pictures on pavement with chalk. He did it for free but donations were welcome. One was a picture of a girl’s head beside a dog’s head, and another with a wolf.

“Hello Humans. I’ve been invited here to provide your eyeball(s), with some pretty colours. I don’t get paid as I work this weekend strictly for tips… so, if you like what you see please make a DONATION. If you don’t like it simply reach into the pocket of the person next to you and give me their money. CHALK MASTER.”

A contest called “Canada’s top dog” had its own tent with a professional photographer taking pictures of dogs behind a white screen; the winning photo is to be published on the cover of “Puppy and dog basics” magazine.

Large “Gourmet” dog bones were also served from a cart and table.

Next year’s festival is expected to be bigger and better with even more attractions.

Interview: Drupal founder Dries Buytaert balances community and company interests

In the year 2000, Dries Buytaert created Drupal, a freely licensed and open source tool to manage websites, as a bulletin board for his college dorm. Since Dries released the software and a community of thousands of volunteer developers have added and improved modules, Drupal has grown immensely popular. Drupal won the overall Open CMS Award in 2007, and some speakers in Drupal’s spacious developer’s room at FOSDEM 2008 were dreaming aloud of its world domination.

Buytaert (now 29) just finished his doctoral thesis and has founded the start-up Acquia. The new company wants to become Drupal’s best friend, with the help of an all-star team and US$7 million collected from venture capitalists. Wikinews reporter Michaël Laurent sat down with Dries in Brussels to discuss these recent exciting developments.

ACLU President Strossen on religion, drugs, guns and impeaching George Bush

There are few organizations in the United States that elicit a stronger emotional response than the American Civil Liberties Union, whose stated goal is “to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States”. Those people include gays, Nazis, women seeking abortion, gun owners, SPAM mailers and drug users. People who are often not popular with various segments of the public. The ACLU’s philosophy is not that it agrees or disagrees with any of these people and the choices that they make, but that they have personal liberties that must not be trampled upon.

In Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s interview with the President of the ACLU, Nadine Strossen, he wanted to cover some basic ground on the ACLU’s beliefs. Perhaps the area where they are most misunderstood or have their beliefs most misrepresented is their feelings about religion in the public sphere. The ACLU categorically does not want to see religion disappear from schools or in the public forum; but they do not want to see government advocacy of any particular religion. Thus, former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore’s placement of a ten ton monument to the Ten Commandments outside the courthouse is strenuously opposed; but “Lone Ranger of the Manger” Rita Warren’s placement of nativity scenes in public parks is vigorously defended. In the interview, Strossen talks about how certain politicians and televangelists purposefully misstate the law and the ACLU’s work in order to raise funds for their campaigns.

David Shankbone’s discussion with Strossen touches upon many of the ACLU’s hot button issues: religion, Second Amendment rights, drug liberalization, “partial-birth abortion” and whether or not George W. Bush should be impeached. It may surprise the reader that many ideas people have about the most visible of America’s civil libertarian organizations are not factually correct and that the ACLU often works closely with many of the organizations people think despise its existence.

Just What Is A Limited Liability Partnership And How Can It Benefit Me

By Jim Haines

In April 2001, legislation was introduced in the United Kingdom allowing the formation of what are known as Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs).

LLPs do not replace traditional partnerships as a company structure, but are an additional option that limit personal liability if anything should go awry with the business, much in the same way as company shareholders are able to do.

Excluding exceptions such as instances of wrongdoing or of fraud, the members of a limited liability partnership cannot lose more than they have invested in to the partnership.

Who Should Consider An LLP?

While, in theory, any group of people setting up in business together might choose an LLP, the advantages are confined mainly to certain professions where they are frequently limited from setting up limited company by their professional bodies.

Solicitors, accountants and surveyors are among the most common groups that would most benefit from establishing a Limited Liability Partnership.

Setting Up An Limited Liability Partnership

Setting up a Limited Liability Partnership is fairly straightforward, though a members agreement – sometimes called a Deed of Partnership – will need to be in place covering the responsibilities of each member.

This agreement covers such things as who is the ‘designated member’ responsible for signing the annual accounts and acting on behalf of the LLP if it is dissolved in the future. It will also include details of the amounts of money each partner puts into the business and what would happen if one partner leaves the business.

The actually process of setting up the LLP simply requires the newly formed partnership to be registered with Companies House.

Taxation Issues for UK LLPs

Limited Liability Partnerships are considered to be ‘tax transparent’. This means that the partnership itself, in effect, pay no tax.

Tax is paid by the individual member partners in proportion to the income gained through the partnership.

As with other business structures, the LLP will have to register for VAT once turnover reaches the 64,000 threshold.

Further, if there are employees who are not members of the partnership, the LLP will have to set up a PAYE system to collect tax and National Insurance contributions for those employees.

Benefits of an Limited Liability Partnership

In short, the benefits of forming a Limited Liability Partnership rather than a Limited Company or traditional partnership are as follows:

1) All the partners in the LLP have limited liability protection.

2) All partners receive partnership tax treatment (there is no entity level income tax).

3) A Limited Liability Partnership allows for more flexibility in splitting partnership profits and losses.

4) The management structure of an LLP is more streamlined than in a limited company.

So, this business structure can benefit not only professionals such as solicitors who would usually set up traditional partnerships but a wide range of businesses.

As it is a fairly new type of company, the advantages are maybe not as well known as for other types of company structures, but you may find it beneficial to talk to a solicitor or accountant about whether an LLP is the best choice for you.

United Nations requests US$700 million in aid for East Africa to avoid famine

Saturday, September 20, 2008

The United Nations has called for wealthy donor nations to donate US$700 million (£382 million or 484 million) in emergency aid for Eastern Africa to prevent widespread famine. Since the start of 2008 the number of people living in hunger in the region has almost doubled to seventeen million, according to the UN.

UN emergency relief co-ordinator John Holmes states that food levels are dangerously low in much of Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Northern Kenya and Uganda. The area, known as the ‘Horn of Africa‘, has seen drought, war and high food prices all worsen the situation. Holmes has warned that the levels of those in need could rise still further.

A total of $1.4 billion is to be raised for the period from now to the year’s end, but at least $716 million of that remains to be found. “We may need significant funds after that period – this is not the end of the story,” warned Holmes.

“We can avoid the situations of the 1980s and the 1990s which were genuine famines at different times. But we do need extra resources, very quickly indeed if we are going to avoid going back to famine situations,” he said. He says Ethiopia and Somalia are in the worst states, with six million Ethiopians requiring emergency support and 43% of Somalia’s population in a similar predicament.

He described locals saying that the situation has never been as bad since 1928, when vast amounts of livestock died. They say rain is needed within the next few months if there is to be any grazing and cereal crops are impossible in the near future, it being well into 2009 before anything may be ready to harvest.

The number of hungry people in the world rose by 75 million last year to 925 million. The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation says high food prices are to blame for the crisis.

Wikinews holds Reform Party USA presidential candidates forum

Tuesday, January 3, 2012

Three men are currently seeking the presidential nomination of the Reform Party of the United States of America: small business owner Andre Barnett, Earth Intelligence Network CEO Robert Steele, and former college football coach Robby Wells. Wikinews reached out to these candidates and asked each of them five questions about their campaigns. There were no space limits placed on the responses, and no candidate was exposed to another’s responses before making their own. The answers are posted below in unedited form for comparison of the candidates.

The Reform Party is a United States third party that was founded in 1995 by industrialist Ross Perot. Perot ran as the party’s first presidential nominee in 1996, and won over eight percent of the popular vote, the highest percentage for a third party candidate since. In 1998, professional wrestler Jesse Ventura ran on the Reform Party ticket and was elected Governor of Minnesota. The party fell in prominence during the lead-up to the 2000 presidential election when it was plagued by infighting between ideological factions. In 2000, paleoconservative Pat Buchanan won the presidential nomination, and went on to receive only 0.4 percent of the popular vote in the general election. In 2004, the party opted to endorse consumer advocate Ralph Nader, but ended the year nearly bankrupt. In 2008, Ted Weill won the party’s presidential nomination, but appeared on the ballot in only one state and won a total of 481 votes.

The party is currently trying to rebuild and has opened several new state chapters. They will attempt to appear on the ballot in more states for the 2012 presidential election. The party is expected to nominate its presidential ticket during the National Convention this summer.

California meat packing firm recalls 143M pounds of beef

Sunday, February 17, 2008

I am dismayed at the in-humane handling of cattle that has resulted in the violation of food safety regulations at the Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company.

In a press release today, California-based Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Co. indicated that it has voluntarily recalled just over 143 million pounds (65 million kilograms) of raw and frozen beef products, which is considered to be the largest single recall of beef products in U.S. history. The move follows an investigation by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) into allegations of animal cruelty and mishandling of cattle destined for the human food chain.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) had determined that beef products produced by the Chino, California company were unfit for human consumption as the cattle had not received “complete and proper inspection.”

The recall has been designated as Class II, which the USDA describes as “a health hazard situation where there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product.”

On Friday, Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer indicated that charges had been laid against employees of the plant alleged to have taken part in the mistreatment of cattle. “Today [Friday], the San Bernardino District Attorney filed felony animal cruelty charges against two employees who were terminated by Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company,” said Schafer. “It is regrettable that these animals were mistreated and I am encouraged and supportive of these actions by the San Bernardino District Attorney in response to this mistreatment.”

The USDA learned of the possible inhumane handling of non-ambulatory (disabled) cattle at the packing plant on January 30 and has since suspended activities at the plant. “We continue to conduct a thorough investigation into whether any violations of food safety or additional humane handling regulations have occurred,” said Secretary Schafer in a press release. “On February 8, our Office of the Inspector General took the lead on the investigation. At that time, USDA extended the administrative hold on Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company products for the National School Lunch Program, the Emergency Food Assistance Program and the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations while the investigation continues,” said Schafer.

The FSIS reported that Hallmark/Westland had not contacted the FSIS public health veterinarian, as required, when cattle became ill or disabled after undergoing ante-mortem (slaughter) inspection, putting the company out of compliance with FSIS regulations. “Because the cattle did not receive complete and proper inspection FSIS has determined them to be unfit for human food and the company is conducting a recall,” explained Secretary Schafer.

The cruelty charges stem from an undercover video that reportedly showed sick cattle being moved by crews using forklifts.

“Words cannot accurately express how shocked and horrified I was at the depictions contained on the video that was taken by an individual who worked at our facility from October 3 thru November 14, 2007,” said Steve Mendell, President, Westland Meat Co. and Hallmark Meat Packing. “We have taken swift action regarding the two employees identified on the video and have already implemented aggressive measures to ensure all employees follow our humane handling policies and procedures. We are also cooperating with the USDA investigators on the allegations of inhumane handling treatment which is a serious breech of our company’s policies and training.”

The USDA stressed that it is “extremely unlikely” that the cattle involved were at risk for Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) or mad-cow disease due to the employment of multiple safeguards. The USDA felt the recall was required, however, as the plant had allegedly violated USDA regulations.

The recall involves raw and frozen beef products produced on various dates from February 1, 2006 to February 2, 2008. For further information about the recall, consumers, media, and distributors are encouraged to contact Hallmark/Westland’s Plant Manager Stan Mendell or Food Safety Consultant Steve Sayer at (909) 590-3340 or the FSIS website, www.fsis.usda.gov.
