Bat for Lashes plays the Bowery Ballroom: an Interview with Natasha Khan

Bat for Lashes is the doppelgänger band ego of one of the leading millennial lights in British music, Natasha Khan. Caroline Weeks, Abi Fry and Lizzy Carey comprise the aurora borealis that backs this haunting, shimmering zither and glockenspiel peacock, and the only complaint coming from the audience at the Bowery Ballroom last Tuesday was that they could not camp out all night underneath these celestial bodies.

We live in the age of the lazy tendency to categorize the work of one artist against another, and Khan has had endless exultations as the next Björk and Kate Bush; Sixousie Sioux, Stevie Nicks, Sinead O’Connor, the list goes on until it is almost meaningless as comparison does little justice to the sound and vision of the band. “I think Bat For Lashes are beyond a trend or fashion band,” said Jefferson Hack, publisher of Dazed & Confused magazine. “[Khan] has an ancient power…she is in part shamanic.” She describes her aesthetic as “powerful women with a cosmic edge” as seen in Jane Birkin, Nico and Cleopatra. And these women are being heard. “I love the harpsichord and the sexual ghost voices and bowed saws,” said Radiohead‘s Thom Yorke of the track Horse and I. “This song seems to come from the world of Grimm’s fairytales.”

Bat’s debut album, Fur And Gold, was nominated for the 2007 Mercury Prize, and they were seen as the dark horse favorite until it was announced Klaxons had won. Even Ladbrokes, the largest gambling company in the United Kingdom, had put their money on Bat for Lashes. “It was a surprise that Klaxons won,” said Khan, “but I think everyone up for the award is brilliant and would have deserved to win.”

Natasha recently spoke with David Shankbone about art, transvestism and drug use in the music business.

DS: Do you have any favorite books?

NK: [Laughs] I’m not the best about finishing books. What I usually do is I will get into a book for a period of time, and then I will dip into it and get the inspiration and transformation in my mind that I need, and then put it away and come back to it. But I have a select rotation of cool books, like Women Who Run With the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estés and Little Birds by Anaïs Nin. Recently, Catching the Big Fish by David Lynch.

DS: Lynch just came out with a movie last year called Inland Empire. I interviewed John Vanderslice last night at the Bowery Ballroom and he raved about it!

NK: I haven’t seen it yet!

DS: Do you notice a difference between playing in front of British and American audiences?

NK: The U.S. audiences are much more full of expression and noises and jubilation. They are like, “Welcome to New York, Baby!” “You’re Awesome!” and stuff like that. Whereas in England they tend to be a lot more reserved. Well, the English are, but it is such a diverse culture you will get the Spanish and Italian gay guys at the front who are going crazy. I definitely think in America they are much more open and there is more excitement, which is really cool.

DS: How many instruments do you play and, please, include the glockenspiel in that number.

NK: [Laughs] I think the number is limitless, hopefully. I try my hand at anything I can contribute; I only just picked up the bass, really—

DS: –I have a great photo of you playing the bass.

NK: I don’t think I’m very good…

DS: You look cool with it!

NK: [Laughs] Fine. The glockenspiel…piano, mainly, and also the harp. Guitar, I like playing percussion and drumming. I usually speak with all my drummers so that I write my songs with them in mind, and we’ll have bass sounds, choir sounds, and then you can multi-task with all these orchestral sounds. Through the magic medium of technology I can play all kinds of sounds, double bass and stuff.

DS: Do you design your own clothes?

NK: All four of us girls love vintage shopping and charity shops. We don’t have a stylist who tells us what to wear, it’s all very much our own natural styles coming through. And for me, personally, I like to wear jewelery. On the night of the New York show that top I was wearing was made especially for me as a gift by these New York designers called Pepper + Pistol. And there’s also my boyfriend, who is an amazing musician—

DS: —that’s Will Lemon from Moon and Moon, right? There is such good buzz about them here in New York.

NK: Yes! They have an album coming out in February and it will fucking blow your mind! I think you would love it, it’s an incredible masterpiece. It’s really exciting, I’m hoping we can do a crazy double unfolding caravan show, the Bat for Lashes album and the new Moon and Moon album: that would be really theatrical and amazing! Will prints a lot of my T-shirts because he does amazing tapestries and silkscreen printing on clothes. When we play there’s a velvety kind of tapestry on the keyboard table that he made. So I wear a lot of his things, thrift store stuff, old bits of jewelry and antique pieces.

DS: You are often compared to Björk and Kate Bush; do those constant comparisons tend to bother you as an artist who is trying to define herself on her own terms?

NK: No, I mean, I guess that in the past it bothered me, but now I just feel really confident and sure that as time goes on my musical style and my writing is taking a pace of its own, and I think in time the music will speak for itself and people will see that I’m obviously doing something different. Those women are fantastic, strong, risk-taking artists—

DS: —as are you—

NK: —thank you, and that’s a great tradition to be part of, and when I look at artists like Björk and Kate Bush, I think of them as being like older sisters that have come before; they are kind of like an amazing support network that comes with me.

DS: I’d imagine it’s preferable to be considered the next Björk or Kate Bush instead of the next Britney.

NK: [Laughs] Totally! Exactly! I mean, could you imagine—oh, no I’m not going to try to offend anyone now! [Laughs] Let’s leave it there.

DS: Does music feed your artwork, or does you artwork feed your music more? Or is the relationship completely symbiotic?

NK: I think it’s pretty back-and-forth. I think when I have blocks in either of those area, I tend to emphasize the other. If I’m finding it really difficult to write something I know that I need to go investigate it in a more visual way, and I’ll start to gather images and take photographs and make notes and make collages and start looking to photographers and filmmakers to give me a more grounded sense of the place that I’m writing about, whether it’s in my imagination or in the characters. Whenever I’m writing music it’s a very visual place in my mind. It has a location full of characters and colors and landscapes, so those two things really compliment each other, and they help the other one to blossom and support the other. They are like brother and sister.

DS: When you are composing music, do you see notes and words as colors and images in your mind, and then you put those down on paper?

NK: Yes. When I’m writing songs, especially lately because I think the next album has a fairly strong concept behind it and I’m writing the songs, really imagining them, so I’m very immersed into the concept of the album and the story that is there through the album. It’s the same as when I’m playing live, I will imagine I see a forest of pine trees and sky all around me and the audience, and it really helps me. Or I’ll just imagine midnight blue and emerald green, those kind of Eighties colors, and they help me.

DS: Is it always pine trees that you see?

NK: Yes, pine trees and sky, I guess.

DS: What things in nature inspire you?

NK: I feel drained thematically if I’m in the city too long. I think that when I’m in nature—for example, I went to Big Sur last year on a road trip and just looking up and seeing dark shadows of trees and starry skies really gets me and makes me feel happy. I would sit right by the sea, and any time I have been a bit stuck I will go for a long walk along the ocean and it’s just really good to see vast horizons, I think, and epic, huge, all-encompassing visions of nature really humble you and give you a good sense of perspective and the fact that you are just a small particle of energy that is vibrating along with everything else. That really helps.

DS: Are there man-made things that inspire you?

NK: Things that are more cultural, like open air cinemas, old Peruvian flats and the Chelsea Hotel. Funny old drag queen karaoke bars…

DS: I photographed some of the famous drag queens here in New York. They are just such great creatures to photograph; they will do just about anything for the camera. I photographed a famous drag queen named Miss Understood who is the emcee at a drag queen restaurant here named Lucky Cheng’s. We were out in front of Lucky Cheng’s taking photographs and a bus was coming down First Avenue, and I said, “Go out and stop that bus!” and she did! It’s an amazing shot.

NK: Oh. My. God.

DS: If you go on her Wikipedia article it’s there.

NK: That’s so cool. I’m really getting into that whole psychedelic sixties and seventies Paris Is Burning and Jack Smith and the Destruction of Atlantis. Things like The Cockettes. There seems to be a bit of a revolution coming through that kind of psychedelic drag queen theater.

DS: There are just so few areas left where there is natural edge and art that is not contrived. It’s taking a contrived thing like changing your gender, but in the backdrop of how that is still so socially unacceptable.

NK: Yeah, the theatrics and creativity that go into that really get me. I’m thinking about The Fisher King…do you know that drag queen in The Fisher King? There’s this really bad and amazing drag queen guy in it who is so vulnerable and sensitive. He sings these amazing songs but he has this really terrible drug problem, I think, or maybe it’s a drink problem. It’s so bordering on the line between fabulous and those people you see who are so in love with the idea of beauty and elevation and the glitz and the glamor of love and beauty, but then there’s this really dark, tragic side. It’s presented together in this confusing and bewildering way, and it always just gets to me. I find it really intriguing.

DS: How are you received in the Pakistani community?

NK: [Laughs] I have absolutely no idea! You should probably ask another question, because I have no idea. I don’t have contact with that side of my family anymore.

DS: When you see artists like Pete Doherty or Amy Winehouse out on these suicidal binges of drug use, what do you think as a musician? What do you get from what you see them go through in their personal lives and with their music?

NK: It’s difficult. The drugs thing was never important to me, it was the music and expression and the way he delivered his music, and I think there’s a strange kind of romantic delusion in the media, and the music media especially, where they are obsessed with people who have terrible drug problems. I think that’s always been the way, though, since Billie Holiday. The thing that I’m questioning now is that it seems now the celebrity angle means that the lifestyle takes over from the actual music. In the past people who had musical genius, unfortunately their personal lives came into play, but maybe that added a level of romance, which I think is pretty uncool, but, whatever. I think that as long as the lifestyle doesn’t precede the talent and the music, that’s okay, but it always feels uncomfortable for me when people’s music goes really far and if you took away the hysteria and propaganda of it, would the music still stand up? That’s my question. Just for me, I’m just glad I don’t do heavy drugs and I don’t have that kind of problem, thank God. I feel that’s a responsibility you have, to present that there’s a power in integrity and strength and in the lifestyle that comes from self-love and assuredness and positivity. I think there’s a real big place for that, but it doesn’t really get as much of that “Rock n’ Roll” play or whatever.

DS: Is it difficult to come to the United States to play considering all the wars we start?

NK: As an English person I feel equally as responsible for that kind of shit. I think it is a collective consciousness that allows violence and those kinds of things to continue, and I think that our governments should be ashamed of themselves. But at the same time, it’s a responsibility of all of our countries, no matter where you are in the world to promote a peaceful lifestyle and not to consciously allow these conflicts to continue. At the same time, I find it difficult to judge because I think that the world is full of shades of light and dark, from spectrums of pure light and pure darkness, and that’s the way human nature and nature itself has always been. It’s difficult, but it’s just a process, and it’s the big creature that’s the world; humankind is a big creature that is learning all the time. And we have to go through these processes of learning to see what is right.

How To Start A Lawn And Garden Care Business

By Susan Nelson Hopkins

There is a huge market for lawn and garden care businesses. Of the millions of acres of soil in America that are dedicated to household lawns, 70% are kept healthy and well maintained by lawn care professionals… just like you.

Consider also the thousands of commercial properties requiring the services of a lawn care professional.

So, dont worry about there not being room for another lawn and garden care business the market is still wide open.

But, starting a lawn care business involves the same game plan as any other business.

First, focus on these business start-up steps: Develop a business plan (action plan); Develop a budget; Obtain capital; Secure necessary permits; Set up necessary state and federal tax accounts; Check into insurance; Set up a business bank account; Set up an accounting system

Advertise; Develop a customer base; Pay bills on time

Check out your local Better Business Bureau for suggestions and resources to help you take care of all this. It may seem daunting, but its really pretty straight forward.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIwijqd-cuY[/youtube]

Just use common sense during this phase of the start-up, and dont be afraid to ask questions.

But don’t ignore these steps… 90% of new businesses fail because they ignored one or more of them.

Another thing unless you plan to hire employees to handle the physical labor, make sure to get a medical check-up to verify that you can physically handle it yourself. This will help any misgivings the financial and insurance folks might have as well as some customers.

Next, focus on the equipment and tools you will need While youre getting the start-up phase on track, begin gathering up tools and equipment. Remember, they dont have to be brand new … unless you have a very generous source of capital (grin).

Here are just a few of the more obvious items:

Pickup Truck… It can be old as the hills in fact it could even be a classic, or an antique it just needs to be mechanically sound and capable of hauling.

In fact, have a mechanic you trust look it over. Tell him/her that you want to know if your truck is capable of hauling a trailer and all of your tools and equipment. It should also be powerful enough to haul a trailer loaded with debris.

Your mechanic can help you determine what the approximate weight would be. Incidentally, this could also be an opportunity to work out a maintenance agreement with your mechanic. All kinds of opportunities here

Equipment Trailer… The size depends on the mower and other tools you plan to haul, as well as on your trucks hauling capacity. Most lawn care businesses prefer flatbed trailers with built in ramps. If your trailer also accommodates side racks with panels, hauling debris will be much easier.

Make sure your mechanic takes a look at the trailer along with your truck. This will give him/her a good idea of the hauling weight and other questions you will have.

Power Equipment… The lawn mower choice will depend on your budget, the size of your trailer or truck bed, and the type of lawns you plan to service. If the plan is to start small, then have at least one reliable walk-behind lawn mower. Two is always better you dont want mechanical problems shutting down your business!

Adding a ride-on lawn mower is the ultimate goal of any lawn care service. Theyre fast and the faster you can mow, the more lawns you can mow. The walk-behind mower is still necessary to get into those tight areas where the ride-on wont fit.

A good leaf blower is pretty essential, too. Get the quietest leaf blower you can afford your customers neighbors will love you. In fact, it may encourage them to contract your services.

Again, just use common sense. Go through target neighborhoods and notice which ones have meticulously cared for lawns, and find out who the lawn care service providers are.

Then, watch those providers. Find out what equipment and tools they use, how long it takes them, and the clincher have they made the lawn look better than it actually is!

It always pays to copy the experts, to learn from them thats the sign of a successful business!

One last thing Remember to check your areas environmental regulations for noise and emissions.

One more last thing Keep in mind that your new lawn care business will also be judged on the spotlessness of your equipment, and of you and your employees not just on the immaculate lawns you leave behind.

Follow these steps, and your lawn care business will stand out from all the rest

ISS Expedition 10 returns to Earth

Monday, April 25, 2005

With two space walks, 78 million miles and six months on board the International Space Station under their belts, Commander-Science Officer Leroy Chiao and Flight Engineer Salizhan Sharipov, the station’s 10th crew, landed in Kazakhstan in a Soyuz spacecraft at 6:08 p.m. EDT Sunday.

Also returning was European Space Agency Astronaut Roberto Vittori of Italy, who launched to the Station with the Expedition 11 crew and spent eight days doing experiments. He was aboard under a contract between ESA and the Russian Federal Space Agency.

The re-entry of the ISS Soyuz 9 spacecraft was perfect, returning the astronauts to Earth 53 miles northeast of the town of Arkalyk after 192 days, 19 hours and 2 minutes in space for the Expedition 10 crew. The recovery team reached the capsule in minutes.

They launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan last Oct. 13 at 11:06 p.m. EDT. During their increment they performed two spacewalks, continued station maintenance and did scientific experiments.

Notable accomplishments included replacing critical hardware in the Joint Quest Airlock; repairing U.S. spacesuits; and submitting a scientific research paper on ultrasound use in space. Chiao was also the first astronaut to vote in the U.S. Presidential election from space. The crew completed two spacewalks, including experiment installation and tasks to prepare the Station for the arrival of the new European Automated Transfer Vehicle next year.

Aboard the Station, Commander Sergei Krikalev and Flight Engineer and NASA Station Science Officer John Phillips, the Expedition 11 crew, are beginning a six-month mission. It will include the resumption of Space Shuttle flights and two spacewalks from the Station. Expedition 11 is scheduled to return to Earth on October 7, 2005. The two latest occupants of the station launched with Vittori from Baikonur April 14.

Krikalev and Phillips will have light duty for the next two days, as they rest after completing a busy handover period. For the past week, they have been learning about Station operations from the two men who called the ship home since October. Chiao and Sharipov briefed Krikalev and Phillips on day-to-day operations and gave them hands-on opportunities at Station maintenance. Chiao and Phillips restored the Quest airlock to working order for future spacewalks and practiced operating the Canadarm2 robotic arm.

6 Unexpected Reasons That Causes Erectile Dysfunction

What Is The Main Cause Of Erectile Dysfunction?

Today, all over the world, there are about 150 million men who suffer From ED. But the truth is that there is no single cause, due to which men all over the globe, suffer from erectile dysfunction. Various men would suffer from male sexual impotence, due to various reasons. So, if one man is suffering from ED for one reason, it does not mean other men will also be suffering from reason of weakness in man, for the very same reason.

There are many reasons why men all over the planet suffer from impotence in men and these are inclusive of:

  1. Physical causes.
  2. Psychological causes.
  3. Injuries

Most people have no clue as to what causes erectile dysfunction. In fact, there are some men who do not even know that they are suffering from ED. And then there are those men, who know that they are suffering from weakness of man in bed, for the simple fact that they have seen the warning signs of erectile dysfunction in themselves and they are well aware of them – but they have an ego that tells them that nothing is wrong with them. But for now, let is take a look at…

6 Unexpected Reasons That Cause Erectile Dysfunction

You may be suffering from ED for a reason that you never ever imagined was possible. Here are 6 unexpected reasons why you may be suffering from ED:

  1. High Blood Pressure And Medications Used To Treat High Blood Pressure: If your blood vessels are healthy and there is good enough blood flow entering your penis, this is sufficient enough to give you a good hardon. But if the blood pressure shoots up, this could lead to your blood vessels being damaged. And because of this, they get less elastic and their capability of transporting the same volume of blood, quickly, diminishes. There are also certain medicines that are used to treat high blood pressure, medicines like diuretics and beta-blockers which can increase your chances of getting erectile dysfunction.
  1. Infected Gums: How can gums that are infected cause you to suffer from ED? Studies have shown that if you suffer from gum diseases or you have chronically inflamed periodontitis, you have an increased chance of suffering from ED. There was a recent study done on mice, which suggests that there is a link between ED and gum diseases. But what this connection between gum disease and erectile dysfunction in humans is, is not clear till now. If a person suffers from gum disease, this is a sign that the person has poor health in general and this has been linked to the person having an increased risk of suffering from heart disease, which happens to be yet another indicator of a risk factor for ED.
  1. Medicines Taken For Enlarged Prostate And Hair Loss: There are some medicines which when used to treat an enlarged prostate and hair loss in men, can lead to a man suffering from the loss of libido and erectile dysfunction. These medicines work by decreasing the amount of dihydrotestosterone that circulates in the blood. Dihydrotestosterone is the sex hormone of males, which helps a man in keeping his sex drive.
  1. Cycling: If you spend too many hours cycling, that too without changing your position, this can result in damage to your nerves and this can give rise to erectile dysfunction.
  1. Male Friends And Colleagues: Her male friends, your male friends, her male colleagues, your male colleagues – they can cause you to suffer from ED. Yes, no matter how hard you might find this to believe, studies have shown that this is true. Your wife or fianc or sexual partner spending more time with male friends – yours or hers and colleagues – yours or hers, is a condition that can cause you to suffer from erectile dysfunction. Studies indicate that if your wife or fianc got closer to friends or colleagues, your chances of you keeping an erection or even getting it, can be much lower, as compared to a man whose wife or partner did not associate with male friends or male colleagues.
  1. High Levels Of Cholesterol: If your level of cholesterol is high, it increases your chances of you getting atherosclerosis, a condition in which the arteries become narrow and also clog. And the result is the reduction in the flow of blood. Because of this, the arteries which are present in your penis, are not able to let enough blood flow into your penis, to give you an erection.

Other Erectile Dysfunction Causes

There are many other reasons why you could suffer from erectile dysfunction and some of these are:

  • Smoking: This leads to damage of your blood vessels, inclusive of those blood vessels that supply blood to your penis. Without blood flowing into your penis, you would not be able to get an erection.
  • Peyronie’s Disease: This disease causes your penis to be curved and when you get an erection, it gives you a lot of pain and thus causes you to suffer from ED.
  • Diabetes: If you have diabetes, your nerves and blood vessels are affected. And due to this, you are at an increased risk of suffering from ED.
  • Medicines: ED can also take place as a result of it being the side effects of some medicines used such as medicines for epilepsy, medicines used to lower cholesterol, antipsychotics, medicines used to treat high blood pressure and antidepressants.
  • Depression: When you are depressed, it can cause you to lose interest in having sex and lead to you suffering from erectile dysfunction.
  • Relationship Issues: You may be facing relationship issues with your sexual partner or with some other people in or out of the house or even at your job and this could also be a reason for you to suffer from ED.
  • Loss Of Interest In Your Partner: You may no longer like your partner, the way you once used to and this could also lead to you suffering from ED.
  • Anxiety And Stress: If you are stressed out or if you are anxious about some things in your life, you could suffer from ED.

No Matter Why You Are Suffering From Erectile Dysfunction

What you need to remember is, irrespective of why you may be suffering from ED, there are millions of men all over the globe who are also suffering from the very same issue as you are. In fact, ED is one of the most common sexual problems faced by men all over the world.

But, no matter why you might be suffering from ED, if you know you are experiencing sexual dysfunction symptoms, it is very important that you see a doctor and get erectile dysfunction treatment, as neglecting it can cause you more problems than you could ever imagine! So, whether you are suffering from ED due to some of the most common reasons or one of the above 6 unexpected reasons that cause erectile dysfunction, be sure to seek treatment!

Minnesota to require 25% renewable energy production

Saturday, February 24, 2007

This article features in a News Brief from Audio Wikinews:

Governor Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota signed a bill into law on Thursday that requires the state to generate a significant amount of its energy needs from renewable sources.

The amount of power generated by wind turbines in the state stands now at 895 megawatts. An additional 5,000 megawatts of energy from renewable sources will need to be added to Minnesota’s electricity resources, which is roughly eight times more than the amount that currently comes from renewables.

The bill signed by the Governor requires energy companies to provide 25 percent of power from renewable sources by 2025.

Xcel Energy, which supplies approximately half of the electricity in the state, is required to provide 30 percent from renewable sources by 2020.

How To Choose A Tax Preparer For Income Tax Preparation In New York City

byAlma Abell

When celebrities, or high profile individuals are in the news for a criminal case against them involving tax related charges, people often shake their heads and wonder how this could have happened, and why it happened. Taxpayers also often hear many horror stories in the news, or from family members and friends who have either had a bad experience themselves, or heard of one. Although each individual case and circumstances are different, one of the biggest fears people have in life is getting in trouble with the Internal Revenue Service for an issue with the integrity of their tax return. To make matters worse, taxpayers must deal with these fears every year when tax time comes around. Choosing a company to prepare a tax return is an important decision; however, finding Income Tax preparation in New York City with a reputable company is not as complicated as taxpayers may believe. Here are four basic things to look for when selecting a tax preparer to help make the right choice.

1. Tax preparers must have credentials, and they must have a certain amount of education they must complete before they can work as a tax preparer legally. Always ask a tax professional if they are in compliance with rules set by the Internal Revenue Service regarding their education requirements and ask if they use a preparer tax identification number assigned to them to prepare tax returns.

2. Make sure all prices for basic tax preparation services are clearly displayed in the tax preparation office. Prices will vary according to the complexity of each return and the amount of forms that must be filed for each tax return, but there should be a general outline on display.

3. Ask the tax preparer how they store their customers tax return information. By law, tax returns must be stored in a locked filing cabinet in a secure location.

4. Ask the tax preparer how many years they have been preparing taxes. This is especially important for customers who have complex tax returns.

Although these guidelines may appear to be basic, many taxpayers never ask these questions. If a tax preparer is qualified to prepare taxes, charges a fair price, keeps their customers information secure, and has experience preparing complicated tax returns, this is a good place to start to weed out those who are not qualified to provide Income Tax preparation in New York City.
