Today, Joachim Löw, manager of the German national football team, dropped Borussia Dortmund midfielder Marco Reus from the UEFA Euro 2016 squad. Marco Reus, who turned 27 years old today, is suffering from a groin injury. He also missed the 2014 FIFA World Cup with an ankle injury.

Löw said their medical staff wasn’t sure Reus could meet the demands of the forthcoming games. He added, “Marco has serious fitness problems; he can only run in a straight line at the moment.” ((de))German language: ?Marco hat massive gesundheitliche Probleme, im Moment kann er nur geradeaus laufen.

Löw also did not include other Bundesliga players Karim Bellarabi, Julian Brandt, and Sebastian Rudy from the provisional squad in the final selection. Thanking the four German internationals for their performance in training, he said, “It’s not a decision against those four players, but rather one in favour of the other 23.” ((de))German language: ?Es ist keine Entscheidung gegen vier Spieler, sondern eine Entscheidung für 23 Spieler.

Germany are due to play their final friendly match before the start of Euro 2016 on June 4 against Hungary. On June 12, Germany will open their account in Euro 2016 when they face Ukraine in Lille, France.

UK government loses personal information of 25 million people

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

British Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling announced to a shocked House of Commons today that two password-protected — but not encrypted — computer disks containing the entire Child Benefit database have been lost in transit between the offices of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in Washington, Tyne & Wear and the National Audit Office (NAO) in London, in what has been described as “one of the world’s biggest ID protection failures”.

The database contains details of all families in the UK who receive Child Benefit — all families with children up to 16 years of age, plus those with children up to 20 years old if they are in full-time education or training — estimated to contain 25 million individuals in 7.25 million families. Among other items of information, the database contains names, addresses, dates of birth, child benefit and National Insurance numbers, and where appropriate, bank or building society account details.

The discs were created by a junior official at the HMRC in response to a request for information by the NAO, and were sent unregistered and unrecorded on 18 October using the courier company TNT — which operates the HMRC’s internal mail system. When it was found that the discs had not arrived for audit at the NAO, a further copy of this data was made and sent — this time by registered mail — and this package did arrive. HMRC were not informed that the original discs had been lost until 8 November, and Darling himself was informed on 10 November.

The violation of data protection laws involved in the creation of the discs has led to strong attacks on the government’s competence to establish the proposed National Identity Register, when all UK residents will have an identity card. Conservative Shadow Chancellor George Osborne described the loss of data as “catastrophic” and said “They [the government] simply cannot be trusted with people’s personal information”.

The Chairman of HMRC, Paul Gray, has resigned over the affair, and critics are calling for Darling to do likewise.

This is the third data embarrassment for HMRC in recent weeks — earlier this month it was reported that the details of over 15,000 Standard Life customers had been put on disk, and then lost en route from HMRC in Newcastle to Standard Life in Edinburgh — and last month a laptop containing the data of 400 people with high-value ISAs was stolen from the boot of a car belonging to a HMRC official who had been carrying out a routine audit.

Manage Your Cash Flow Or Perish

Filed under: Cash Management — Admin @ 3:09 pm, .

Effectively managing the cash flow of your business is really about protecting your bottom line. Turning a profit is great but only if you see the cold hard cash that those paper profits are supposed to be bringing in. If to many customers fail to pay you or pay you late on a consistent basis then your business could land itself in serious trouble without you being aware of how bad the downward spiral really was.

Forward thinking entrepreneurs are acting to protect and even grow their businesses. But this means they are protecting their greatest asset. Cash in the bank. Successful entrepreneurs and growth businesses understand that there is a need especially in rough economic times to protect what they have. Otherwise they may find themselves turning a good profit on their goods or services, but they simply don’t get enough money in quickly enough to cover all the money going out of the business to pay for materials, stock, staff and all the other costs of running the business.

The flow of cash into and out of your business is of even greater concern to start up businesses as they are in the position of having to also grow a customer base. This means that a great deal more money will be going out the door than is coming in. With the economy being the way it is, managing and monitoring cash flow is definitely a priority for any business because you don’t know what’s coming in the door at any given time. You can find your cash levels fluctuating wildly.

The key to managing your cash levels is not to let your debtors get out of hand. Understand your monthly income and expenses. Learn to anticipate and avoid cash problems. Discuss with your banker our accountant how to build working capital reserves. A company may have excess cash but be unprofitable. A company may be profitable but lack cash. You want to be profitable and have that cash as well.

The Solution is to keep cash flow plans up to date. Make sure cash flow plans are realistic. Allow headroom in your cash requirements to counter unexpected variances. Be aware of your current cash position, forecasts and bear in mind potential fluctuations. Closely manage your stock and debtors to minimize needs for working capital. And manage your supply chain to gain maximum credit. Talk to creditors early if you need to extend. The bottom line is that you need to control your cash flow and not be at its mercy.

65 Ethiopians and 9 Chinese were killed in their sleep Tuesday in a predawn raid on an oil field in Abole, a small town in southeast Ethiopia’s Somali state. Seven Chinese were kidnapped.

The Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF), a separatist group, claimed responsibility for the attack on the field which is run by a Chinese firm.

At a news conference, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said: “Such an outrage, the cold-blooded murder of people who were building roads and engaged in other development activities, is a measure of the level of barbarity involved.”

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, Liu Jianchao, condemned the attack, which he said involved more than 200 gunmen.

The Hamas-led Palestinian Authority (PA) urged calm. “The government is interested to keep the ceasefire and the calm and we are trying, through consultation and discussion with the Palestinian factions, to take a position in order to protect our people,” PA spokesperson Ghazi Hamad said.

PA President, Mahmoud Abbas who is a member of Fatah, said: “The violation of the truce is an exceptional event that will not last.”

The Defense Minister of Israel, Amir Peretz warned against further attacks, but so far Israel has not made an armed response.

México City, the capital of the world’s second-largest Catholic country, Mexico, voted today to legalize abortion.

City lawmakers passed legislation that legalizes abortion during the first three months of pregnancy. Hitherto, abortions were only legal in cases of rape, if the woman’s life is in danger, or if there are signs of severe defects in the fetus.

The legislation passed in the face of pressure from Mexican bishops who spoke out against the law. Opinion polls indicated that Mexico City residents were fairly evenly split on the issue.

Sponsors of the bill argued that the deaths of some 1,500 women during illegal abortions over the last ten years showed the need to legalize it.

Race to save Chilean miners trapped underground from spiralling into depression continues

Thursday, September 2, 2010

It has emerged that the 33 Chilean miners trapped underground after the mine they were working in collapsed could be brought to the surface in a shorter time than was initially feared. While officials publicly announced that the men would not be brought to the surface until Christmas, sources inside technical meetings have revealed that they could in fact be on the surface by early November. The news comes as families were allowed to speak by radio-telephone to their trapped loved ones on Sunday. Over the weekend, video images filmed by the miners emerged showing the miners playing dominoes at a table and singing the Chilean national anthem. The miners also used the camera to send video messages to their families on the surface, saying that they regularly broke into tears, but were feeling better having received food and water.

The grainy nightvision images, filmed on a high definition camcorder that was sent down a small shaft to the mine, show the men in good spirits, chanting “long live Chile, and long live the miners.” They are unshaven and stripped to the waist because of the heat underground, and are seen wearing white clinical trousers that have been designed to keep them dry. Giving a guided tour of the area they are occupying, Mario Sepúlveda, one of the miners, explains they have a “little cup to brush our teeth”, and a place where they pray each day. “We have everything organized,” he tells the camera. Gesturing to the table in the center of the room, he says that “we meet here every day. We plan, we have assemblies here every day so that all the decisions we make are based on the thoughts of all 33.” Another unidentified miner asks to rescuers, “get us out of here soon, please.” A thermometer is shown in the video, reading 29.5C (85F).

As the film continues, it becomes evident that the miners have stuck a poster of a topless woman on the wall. The miners appear shy, and one man puts his hand to his face, presumably dazzled by the light mounted on the cameraman’s helmet. One miner sent a message to his family. “Be calm”, he says. “We’re going to get out of here. And we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your efforts.” Another said that the miners are “sure that there are people here in Chile that are big people, that are powerful people, that are intelligent people, and they have the technology and they will all work together to get us out of here.” Speaking to the camera, one says: “we have had the great fortune that trapped in this mine there are good, professional people. We have electricians, we have mechanics, we have machine operators and we will let you know that while you are working to rescue us on the surface, we are down here ready to help you too.” It has been reported that Mario Gómez, 63, has become the group’s “spiritual leader”, having worked in the mines for over fifty years. He has requested that materials to build a shrine be sent down to the cavern.

Upon seeing the video in a private screening, family members, who are living in a small village of tents at the entrance to the San José copper-gold mine—which they have named Camp Hope—were elated. “He’s skinny, bearded and it was painful to see him with his head hanging down, but I am so happy to see him alive”, said Ruth Contreras, the mother of Carlos Bravo, who is trapped in the mine. The video, of which only a small portion has been released to the public, shows the miners, many of them wearing helmets, cracking jokes and thanking the rescuers for their continued efforts. The supplies are being sent to the men through a small shaft only twelve centimeters wide, and a laboratory has been set up with the purpose of designing collapsible cots and miniature sandwiches, which can be sent down such a narrow space.

CNN reported on Friday that “officials are splitting the men into two shifts so one group sleeps while the other works or has leisure time .. On average, each man has lost 22 pounds (10 kilograms) since they became trapped three weeks ago, and dehydration remains a threat. But a survey of the men indicates that at least nine miners are still too overweight to fit through the proposed rescue shaft. Initially, the miners survived by draining water from a water-cooled piece of equipment. To stay hydrated in the 90-degree mine, each miner must drink eight or nine pints of water per day.”

But while there are jubilant celebrations on the surface that the miners are alive, officials are now nervous that the miners could become depressed, trapped in a dark room the size of a small apartment. Chilean health minister Jaime Mañalich said that, on the video, he saw the telltale signs of depression. “They are more isolated, they don’t want to be on the screen, they are not eating well”, he said. “I would say depression is the correct word.” He said that doctors who had watched the video had observed the men suffering from “severe dermatological problems.” Dr. Rodrigo Figueroa, head of the trauma, stress and disaster unit at the Catholic University in Santiago, Chile, explained that “following the euphoria of being discovered, the normal psychological reaction would be for the men to collapse in a combination of fatigue and stress … People who are trained for emergencies – like these miners – tend to minimize their own needs or to ignore them. When it is time to ask for help, they don’t.” NASA has advised emergency workers that entertaining the miners would be a good idea. They are to be sent a television system complete with taped football matches. Another dilemma facing Mañalich is whether the miners should be permitted to smoke underground. While nicotine gum has been delivered to the miners, sending down cigarettes is a plan that has not been ruled out.

With the news that drilling of the main rescue tunnel was expected to begin on Monday, officials have informed the media that they hope to have the miners out of the mine by Christmas—but sources with access to technical meetings have suggested that the miners could actually be rescued by the first week of November. A news report described the rescue plan—”the main focus is a machine that bores straight down to 688m and creates a chimney-type duct that could be used to haul the miners out one by one in a rescue basket. A second drilling operation will attempt to intercept a mining tunnel at a depth of roughly 350m. The miners would then have to make their way through several miles of dark, muddy tunnels and meet the rescue drill at roughly the halfway point of their current depth of 688m.” Iván Viveros Aranas, a Chilean policeman working at Camp Hope, told reporters that Chile “has shown a unity regardless of religion or social class. You see people arriving here just to volunteer, they have no relation at all to these families.”

But over the weekend, The New York Times reported that the “miners who have astonished the world with their discipline a half-mile underground will have to aid their own escape — clearing 3,000 to 4,000 tons of rock that will fall as the rescue hole is drilled, the engineer in charge of drilling said Sunday … The work will require about a half-dozen men working in shifts 24 hours a day.” Andrés Sougarret, a senior engineer involved in operating the drill said that “the miners are going to have to take out all that material as it falls.”

The families of those trapped were allowed to speak to them by radio-telephone on Sunday—a possibility that brought reassurance both the miners and those on the surface. The Intendant of the Atacama Region, Ximena Matas, said that there had been “moments of great emotion.” She continued to say that the families “listened with great interest and they both felt and realized that the men are well. This has been a very important moment, which no doubt strengthens their [the miners’] morale.” The phone line is thought to be quite temperamental, but it is hoped that soon, those in the mine and those in Camp Hope will be able to talk every day. “To hear his voice was a balm to my heart … He is aware that the rescue is not going to happen today, that it will take some time. He asked us to stay calm as everything is going to be OK … He sounded relaxed and since it was so short I didn’t manage to ask anything. Twenty seconds was nothing”, said said Jessica Cortés, who spoke to her husband Víctor Zamora, who was not even a miner, but a vehicle mechanic. “He went in that day because a vehicle had broken down inside the mine … At first they told us he had been crushed [to death].”

Esteban Rojas sent up a letter from inside the mine, proposing to his long-time partner Jessica Yáñez, 43. While they have officially been married for 25 years, their wedding was a civil service—but Rojas has now promised to have a church ceremony which is customary in Chile. “Please keep praying that we get out of this alive. And when I do get out, we will buy a dress and get married,” the letter read. Yáñez told a newspaper that she thought he was never going to ask her. “We have talked about it before, but he never asked me … He knows that however long it takes, I’ll wait for him, because with him I’ve been through good and bad.”

Department of Defense report lambasts communication failure in US War on Terror

Monday, December 20, 2004

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A U.S. Department of Defenseadvisory committee has released a report harshly criticizing the U.S.-led “[[Waron Terror]]”. The report details communication failures with the Muslimworld, and notes that current efforts may have achieved the oppositeof their intended effect.

The report released without publicity the Wednesday before Thanksgiving by Defense Science Board, focuses on a failure of communication, which the Defense Science Board considers vital to the war on terror. It asserts this failure of “strategic communication” contributes to a perceived “negative image in world opinion and diminished ability to persuade” of the United States, and that a resulting atmosphere of hostility can manifest in numerous ways.

The list of harmful effects includes “terrorism, thin coalitions, harmful effects on business, restrictionson travel, declines in cross border tourism and education flows, anddamaging consequences for other elements of U.S. soft power”.

According to the report, “The information campaign … is an essential objective, because the larger goals of U.S. strategy depend on separating the vast majority of non-violent Muslims from the radical-militant Islamist-Jihadists. But American efforts have not only failed in this respect: they may also have achieved the opposite of what they intended.”

By way of example, the report quotes figures from a June 2004 Zogby poll, claiming to show a significant drop in Arab support for the U.S. in the past couple years. Statistical results are reproduced below.

Country June 2004Favorable/Unfavorable April 2002Favorable/Unfavorable
Morocco 11/88 38/61
Saudi Arabia 4/94 12/87
Jordan 15/78 34/61
Lebanon 20/69 26/70
UAE 14/73 11/87
Egypt 2/98 15/76

The report further claims, “American direct intervention in the Muslim World has paradoxically elevated the stature of and support for radical Islamists.” As summarised in a Christian Science Monitor headline, ‘They hate our policies, not our freedom’.

So why has support for the U.S. dropped? — to single digits in some Arab nations. President Bush and others have famously claimed that America is hated for its freedom. But the Defense Science Board concluded that most Arabs “do not hate us for our values, but because of our policies.” From the same Zogby study:

MoroccoFav/Unfav Saudi ArabiaFav/Unfav JordanFav/Unfav LebanonFav/Unfav UAEFav/Unfav
Science / Technology 90/8 48/51 83/13 52/46 84/12

Policy on Terrorism 13/82 2/96 21/75 10/84 9/84
Iraq Policy 1/98 1/97 2/78 4/93 4/91

This study explains that while support for American values may not be overwhelming, it is practically non-existent for America’s policies in the Middle East.

“The overwhelming majority voice their objections to what they see as one-sided support in favor of Israel and against Palestinian rights, and the longstanding, even increasing support for what Muslims collectively see as tyrannies, most notably Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Pakistan, and the Gulf states. Thus when American public diplomacy talks about bringing democracy to Islamic societies, this is seen as no more than self-serving hypocrisy.”

In the eyes of Muslims, according to this report, America is really only looking out for its own interests.

It concludes from this that the fundamental problem with relations with the Muslim world is not a simple matter of crafting the right message. “Rather, it is a fundamental problem of credibility. Simply, there is none.”

What Are The Best Facial Skin Tightening Treatments?

By Valerie Rosenbaum

If you are looking for the best facial skin tightening treatments, you aren’t alone. According to statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, requests for Botox injections and other ‘smoothing’ solutions are on the rise, despite the fact that people are cutting back on other non-essential items.

We are lucky in many ways. The average lifespan seems to be lengthening. We have information that should help us protect our health and possibly prevent many of the so called age-related diseases. It’s not surprising that we want to look as young as we feel.

But, do we really have to spend $400-$1000 every few months to get laser therapy, heat treatments or painful injections? Do we really need to run the risk of side effects that so many people experience when they have those treatments?

While some researchers focus on spa treatments, others have been looking at safer, more natural approaches and the actual causes of lost firmness. Judging from the research, it is possible to care for your skin’s health and appearance at home, safely and affordably. We just need to find the best facial skin tightening creams.

Many of us have used the process of trial and error. We have spent hundreds of dollars on the latest products, only to be disappointed in the results.

We’ve read the studies and we know which ingredients are supposed to work. So, we’ve been selective about the products that we bought, read the label of ingredients, avoided the bad ones and looked for the good ones. But, still we could not get the results that were seen in the clinical trials. Now, I know why.

Most cosmetic companies take advantage of our knowledge about effective ingredients. So, they include the ingredient, but not enough of it to provide the results.

If it is really the best facial skin tightening cream, it will contain a high concentration of ingredients that have been proven effective in clinical trials. If it’s not, it will contain only a drop or two, just enough to include it on the label of ingredients.

You can judge the concentration by reading down the label. If what you are looking for appears low on the list, then the concentration is very low. So, it probably will not be effective.

In order to find the best facial skin tightening creams, you will need to look for ingredients that stimulate the production of collagen fibers, increase the production of new skin cells and protect the skin’s level of hyaluronic acid. And, you will need to make sure that the company includes enough of those ingredients to provide the desired results.

Ingredients that have been proven effective for increasing firmness include Functional Keratin, RIGIN, wakame kelp extracts and coenzyme Q10. Some of the ineffective ingredients include collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid and urea.

The best facial skin tightening creams can be purchased for a reasonable price. They contain only natural, nourishing ingredients and they work. So, we don’t have to pay thousands of dollars per year to stay firm. We just need to be selective about the skincare products that we buy.

About the Author: Valerie Rosenbaum has spent years searching for the best skin firming product available. The skin firming cream she dicovered uses a proprietary blend of all natural ingredients like Cynergy TK and Functional Keratin. To learn more visit her website DefendYourSkin.com

Ford Taurus to be revived

Friday, February 9, 2007

Ford Motor Company CEO Alan Mulally has reported that Ford will rename the Ford Five Hundred to the Taurus for the 2008 model year, when a facelifted model is expected to be launched to improve the lackluster sales of the outgoing model. Mulally says that Ford’s decision to name all their cars with the letter F was a lackluster move, and makes their names easily forgettable. As a result, Mulally plans on reviving many respected Ford nameplates, the Taurus being one of them, and the Falcon possibly in the future.

The Ford Taurus was originally introduced in 1986, and was a revolutionary car that rewrote the rules for creating a sedan, and pushed the other American automakers to follow suit, leading to a design revolution that completely rid Detroit of the “boxy” cars of the 70s and 80s. The Taurus survived for four generations, selling over 7,500,000 units. The Taurus was discontinued in October 2006, after a brief run of 2007 models destined for fleet customers.

“How can it go away?” Alan Mulally remembered asking, “It’s the best-selling car in America.”

While it is not expected for the name change to turn the Five Hundred into a 400,000 plus units a year blockbuster like the Taurus, it is expected to make sales more solid, and to make the car well known, since the Taurus is a well known nameplate around the country.

2010 India Paper Market Analysis

By Frbiz Tian

Editor’s note: The Indian paper industry currently ranked 15th in the world, and this paper analyzes the rising price of paper, pulp and printing industry, the shortage of rapid growth to the impact of the Indian paper industry.

As the Chilean pulp production account for about 8% of the world around, so the occurrence of earthquake with Chile and pulp plant shutdown, global markets have emerged pulp shortage. And no one is able to determine when these plants to return to normal production, exports also encountered certain difficulties.

In addition, many paper mills in Finland because the last two years are the longest duration of a workers strike and shut down loading and unloading, and fortunately this from the March 23 start of the strike has ended, its impact soon appear. It is understood that bleached soft wood pulp in North America, the transaction price has been from January 2010 up to 624 U.S. dollars per ton in the March 9 875 U.S. dollars per ton.

The pulp prices is mainly the shortage of global market pulp products caused. According to the paper and paper products from the Commission, and industry sources, the global pulp manufacturer’s inventory is now 1 to 6 from the 2009 average of 39 month world fell in 2009 7 to 12 month 26 days. Occur in most parts of the Northern Hemisphere cold weather around the world to bring a timber mill procurement difficulties, and exacerbate the tension of logistics and transportation delays.

Highest price the U.S. government has been from the beginning on January 1 this year to stop pulp manufacturers to 125-150 dollars per ton of paper Black Liquid with subsidies, which makes the pulp manufacturing costs rise in the past two months, at least 150 dollars. Therefore, as the world’s largest producer and consumer of brown paper, some U.S. paper mill on the rise in the use of export markets also caused shortages and price increases. In addition, disruption of shipping goods to the paper pulp prices have also created the conditions, so the current price of paper has changed from a year ago, surged to 750 U.S. dollars 360 U.S. dollars and is expected to exceed 1,000 U.S. dollars mark.

In this case, the number of international paper suppliers announced price increases implemented on paper. And, like other daily consumer goods, the increasing market demand in China will further promote the paper prices. India paper, India is now printing books and laptop manufacturers to market demand is relatively stable, they often require paper suppliers to provide three months of inventory to meet start from June next year’s production and demand.

In raw materials, according to a paper from the large Indian domestic manufacturing enterprises professionals, two paper pulp and waste paper raw material prices which in the past three months has doubled. India, the paper mill is now generally packaged in brown paper as raw material. As long as the waste collection stations sold to paper mills, but the number can not meet production needs, so there is a large part to rely on imports.

As India’s domestic waste generated by far not meet the production needs, so some of the country from the United States, Europe and overseas countries import 50% of the paper. Looking to the future now, India has become one of the world’s fastest-growing market. India paper from the scale, it ranked 15th in the world, but the output only to 2% of the world. With Ballarpur, ITC and JKPapers other paper companies to increase investment in India, India’s paper production is expected to rise in 2015 to 3% of the world.

Then, the printing company should be upward pressure on prices of raw materials transferred to the consumer? Some well-known printing companies in India there have been closed down, many SMEs also face labor shortages and bad debt distress, and if paper prices rise further in short supply, but how can these companies survive it? It is worth every one of us food for thought.

CanadaVOTES: NDP incumbent Wayne Marston running in Hamilton East—Stoney Creek

Thursday, September 25, 2008

On October 14, 2008, Canadians will be heading to the polls for the federal election. New Democratic Party incumbent Wayne Marston is standing for re-election in the riding of Hamilton East—Stoney Creek.

Marston ran in the former federal riding Hamilton East three times, in 1993 and 1997 election and 1996 by-election, losing to prominent Liberal Shelia Copps. Prior to his winning election campaign in 2006, Marston was President of the Hamilton and District Labour Council, serving for 11 years. He was also a School Board Trustee (Ward 5) for the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board from 2000 to 2006.

Wikinews contacted Wayne, to talk about the issues facing Canadians, and what they and their party would do to address them. Wikinews is in the process of contacting every candidate, in every riding across the country, no matter their political stripe. All interviews are conducted over e-mail, and interviews are published unedited, allowing candidates to impart their full message to our readers, uninterrupted.

This riding consists of the part of the Hamilton lying north of the Niagara Escarpment and east of Ottawa Street. It was formed in 2003 from parts of the old ridings Hamilton East and Stoney Creek. Wanting to take Marston’s seat from his are Liberal Larry Di Ianni, Green David William Hart Dyke, and Conservative Frank Rukavina. A candidate from the newly formed Progressive Canadian party, Gord Hill, as well as independent Sam Cino are also running.
