Study: Children who socialise more, get cancer less

Children who spend more time playing with other children are less likely to end up getting childhood cancers, a UK study published today in the British Medical Journal has found. The finding supports the researchers’ theory that reduced exposure to common infections in the first year of life increases the risk of developing acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL).

A total of nearly 10,000 children took part in the study, located in 10 regions across the UK. Amount of time spent in daycare and social activity, during the first year of life, were used to gauge the level of exposure of the infants to common infections such as cold and flu.

Day care in the first year of life for at least two days a week, with at least three other kids, halved a child’s chance of contracting ALL. Those who were rated in the category “any social activity” still had an improvement over the children rated as “no social activity”: they had about 3/4 the chance of getting the disease.

The study describes that effect was “more striking” for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia — a cancer affecting blood and the immune system — than it was for the set of all other cancers. Increasing levels of activity saw decreasing chances of childhood cancers, when compared against children who during their first year had no regular social activity outside the home.

Theories have been around since the 1940s that childhood exposure to infection was related to the development of childhood leukaemia — one, like the working theory of the UK study, said that lack of immune challenge was a factor, another that leukaemia developed as a delayed result of some type of infection.

The research was conducted by the Institute of Cancer Research in London and in Sutton, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of York, Christie Hospital and Central Manchester and Manchester Children’s University Hospitals NHS Trusts, and the University of Edinburgh.

Afghanistan suicide bomb leaves seven Americans dead

Thursday, December 31, 2009

A suicide bomber attacked an American base in the Khowst region on the Pakistani border of Afghanistan, leaving seven American CIA officers dead and six injured. No American or NATO military personnel were killed or injured in the attack on Forward Operating Base Chapman.

It appears that the suicide bomber, reportedly wearing an Afghan National Army uniform, blew himself up in either the gym or the dining facility of Base Chapman.

In a statement on the Voice of Jihad web page, the Taliban claimed responsiblity for the attack, alleging 20 “CIA employees” were killed in the incident.

The Chapman Base is a converted military base which is now being used for civilian reconstruction operations, although military personnel are still located on the base. Camp Salerno, the main base in the Khowst province, has been the target of many attacks in recent weeks.

Recent attacks have been focused on foreign civilians, such as an incident in October in which 7 foreign and 3 Afghan civilians were killed in an attack at a UN guest house. The CIA has not lost this many operatives in nearly 25 years and the last time CIA agents were killed was in 2003.

Six Safety Guidelines During Camping

Submitted by: Nicole Munoz

Camping is fun. There is no doubt about that. But as harmless as camping may seem compared to extreme sports and activities like bungee jumping or rock climbing, you still need to always be cautious about your safety during a camping trip.

Below are some safety guidelines to ensure that you have an enjoyable and safe camping experience.

1. Buy durable and high quality camping gears that you can rely on even during trying times. Don t opt for cheap camping equipment just to save a couple of cents because you ll be in bigger trouble if your poor quality tent falls apart in the middle of a sudden storm. For example, Coleman can guarantee you of sturdy camping gears that will make you feel that you re always in safe hands.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u32erVMfvhY[/youtube]

2. Don t leave food unattended in the camping site for this may attract bears. If only bears are like Yogi Bear who just steals picnic baskets and makes funny wisecracks afterwards, then you don t have any problem. But it s different in real life. Close encounters with bears and other wild forest creatures is one thing you want to avoid during camping trips. Be sure to put away any leftover food or food container before you go back to your tent or before you go to sleep.

3. Don t eat inside the tent. This is a precaution to avoid the small but terrible insects like ants that will follow trails of crumbs inside your tent and will possibly feast on your skin on too. So if you don t want to be waken up in the middle of the night or to wake up the next day with red stinging ant bites on your body, say no to a late evening snack inside the tent.

4. Speaking of insects, another kind you should protect yourself from are mosquitoes which are common residents in forest areas. These dreadful insects being as tiny as they are can cause different kinds of diseases like malaria and dengue. Be sure to pack sufficient insect repellent and to bring a tent with mesh screens to protect yourself from mosquito bites.

5. Never use or even attempt to light up candles or gas lanterns inside your tent. This is extremely dangerous and may start a fire. Opt for safe catalytic heaters like the Coleman SportCat Perfectemp Catalytic Heater with InstaStart Technology designed for indoor use or to be used in enclosed areas such as a tent. It is a good idea to place this heater in an elevated area like on top of a cooler so that it does not come in contact with the tent s floor and minimizes the risk of you rolling over on it as you sleep. Keep it at least two feet away from anything that can be harmed by heat.

6. Pick a safe and well known campsite. Don t go for deserted areas that are very far from civilization. There are many camping parks that have guards to keep you safe even at night. But if you re the adventurous type who loves to go camping in the middle of the forest, it is wise to choose spots that are recommended by fellow campers or have been tried by friends and family.

Remember, to always opt for the safe side. As they say, it s always better safe than sorry.

Tropical Storm Danny to threaten the U.S. East Coast this weekend

Wednesday, August 26, 2009

The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) has declared an area of disturbed weather north of Puerto Rico Tropical Storm Danny today, skipping the tropical depression stage.

A statement by the NHC said “a general northwestward motion with a decrease in forward speed is expected today and Thursday, with a turn toward the north-northwest expected on Friday.” This path should bring Danny near the North Carolina early this weekend, and possibly threatening the New England region by Sunday. While the storm is currently weak and disorganized, forecasters say the storm could reach Category 1 intensity on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. However, it is not expected to be as strong as the previous storm, Hurricane Bill.

At this point we are monitoring the storm

The center’s most recent forecast discussion on the tropical storm said “The forecast track is roughly parallel to the U.S. East Coast…and any deviation from the track could make a large difference in what areas get impacted by Danny”.

Some residents in the northeast U.S. are already monitoring Danny. Long Island, recovering from coastal flooding just last week as Hurricane Bill passed offshore, might suffer another hit.

Danny is currently situated about 445 mi (715 km) east of Nassau, Bahamas, and has winds of 45 mph (75 km/h). It is moving west-northwest at 16 kt. All interests along the East Coast are urged to keep an eye on the developing storm over coming days.

Buffalo, New York —The preliminary hearing for a lawsuit filed against the Elmwood Village Hotel proposal in Buffalo, New York as well as the City of Buffalo has been postponed indefinitely and will take place “as needed” pending the resubmission of the proposal by Savarino Construction also of Buffalo. A request was made to New York State Supreme court Judge Justice Rose Sconiers, the judge to preside over the case, to discuss a “timetable” for resubmission, but the court “decided not to,” said attorney Arthur Giacalone who represents the plaintiffs in the lawsuit.

The hotel would require the demolition of at least five properties, 1109-1121 Elmwood and would cause the closure of several businesses. Already, two businesses, Skunk Tail Glass and Six Nations Native American Gift Shop have relocated, outside the Elmwood Strip. Don apparel, H.O.D. Tattoo and Mondo Video still remain on Elmwood; however, Mondo Video is planning on moving to a new location. The hotel will be 72 rooms and will cost at least 7 million dollars to build. Wyndham Hotels is expected to be the owner/operator of the hotel. The properites are currently owned by Hans Mobius. Two other properties, 605 and 607 Forest might also be part of the proposal. 605 Forest is owned by Pano Georgiadis, owner of Pano’s Restaurant on Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo. 607 Forest is owned by Mobius.

“There’s no new [court] date. The next appearance will be as needed,” said Giacalone.

The proposal was withdrawn by Savarino on July 13, 2006 to undergo “a do-over” and according to the Buffalo News, “shed the lawsuits” against the proposal; however, so far the proposal has “not yet” been resubmitted, but could be in about a “week.”

“With Council being out of session we have a bit of time [before resubmitting]. [We will] Probably resubmit] in a week or so,” said Sam Savarino, CEO of Savarino Construction.

“We welcome some discourse on this project and while we realize that, in all likelihood, we will not make everybody happy, we hope we can develop a consensus that what we provide on that corner will be something that is an enhancement to the neighborhood and the community. Better to have that decided (again?) in a public forum and through the approval process than through a debate over points of law in a courtroom,” added Savarino.

Despite the withdraw of the proposal, Giacalone states that the lawsuit his clients filed is still in effect due to the re-zoning of the properties, which he says are still in place and that he is “frustrated” that his client’s “day in court” has been delayed continuously by Savarino and the city.

Savarino believes that the re-zoning of the properties are “not in effect” because the proposal was withdrawn. He also stated that he is “unsure” on a decision to request the rezoning again because the “city suggested” the rezoning “last time.”

“We have pulled the request [proposal] so I would suppose it [the rezoning] is not in effect. We are as of yet unsure of whether or not to request rezoning of all the parcels. We are communicating with the City on this. You may recall that the City suggested this to us last time. We want to make sure we are doing the correct thing – and the proper thing. I am not sure whether I have a clear indication of that at this juncture,” said Savarino.

Savarino was asked if the proposal was going to be resubmitted or not, but did not answer the question.

Giacalone states that there may be several resons as to why “a new application has not been filed. Is Savarino having a hard time coming to an agreement with Mobius? Has Wyndham Hotels backed out? Is Savarino negotiating with Pano to buy the [605] Forest Avenue property?”

Buffalo’s Common Council is scheduled to meet on September 9, 2006 after Summer recess.

Israel plans crackdown on West Bank settlement outposts

Friday, January 4, 2008

Israel is planning measures to curb settlement activity in the occupied territories in response to pressure from the United States.

Vice Premier Haim Ramon told Israel Radio that he expects the government to take action against the outposts during and after the visit of President Bush to Israel and the West Bank next week.

The outposts are often built on West Bank hilltops, and usually consist of a few trailers or makeshift structures. Israel is obligated to dismantle about 100 outposts under the internationally backed “Roadmap” peace plan, which forms the basis of new negotiations with the Palestinians. But most of the outposts remain in place despite past pledges by Israel to remove them.

The new pledge by Mr. Ramon appears to be a response to American pressure. On Thursday, President Bush described Jewish settlements as an “impediment” to the peace process, and said the outposts should be dismantled.

The settlers accuse the Israeli government of betrayal, saying it is caving in to the dictates of the United States. Settlement activist Nadia Matar promises fierce resistance if soldiers and police try to remove the outposts.

“We must organize to prevent [the] giving away of our homeland to the Arab enemy,” she said, “and the message is very clear: We are a generation of committed Jews, who do not fear internal or external enemies of the Jewish people.”

When You Need A Chiropractor In Sioux Falls, Sd

byAlma Abell

Even a small amount of chronic pain is not something that you should have to deal with on a daily basis. If you are one of those people who tends to just “deal with” the pain they are feeling, it is important to recognize that there is a big difference between pain that comes and goes and chronic pain that just seems to stick around. When you are dealing with chronic pain, you are dealing with something that may “dull” from time to time, but for the most part just seems to stick around. It is not the type of thing that is going to be helped by over the counter medication, nor is it something that can just be waited out. If you are dealing with chronic pain, it is going to get worse over time, meaning that you are going to find more and more effects of it popping up. With all of this in mind, it is important that you take the time to visit a Chiropractor Sioux Falls SD as soon as you recognize that the pain is not going away.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmekBb0_gEE[/youtube]

The problem with trying to deal with chronic pain with over the counter medications is that the meds tend to cover up the pain, but don’t do anything to really help it. While you can try and cover up chronic pain with medication and at-home treatments, the only way that you are going to really get to the core of it so that it can be properly treated is by visiting a chiropractor in Sioux Falls, SD. A chiropractor in Sioux Falls, SD doesn’t work to cover up the pain, they try to get it treated so that it either fully goes away, or you can better live with it.

The best thing that a Chiropractor Sioux Falls SD can do is to diagnose the reason for the pain. Without a proper diagnosis, you can’t begin to treat the issue. A chiropractor is going to be able to get to the root of the issue so that you can get the right treatment for it.

Surprise demolition of partially collapsed building in Buffalo, New York met with opposition

Saturday, June 14, 2008

Buffalo, New York —Wikinews has learned that, in a surprising turn of events, the city of Buffalo located in New York, has ordered and begun an emergency demolition on a three story 19th century stable which partially collapsed on Wednesday June 11 causing at least five homes to be evacuated. Residents are not happy, and despite the short notice of the demolition, nearly 30 people showed up to protest it. Demolition was not supposed to begin until Monday June 16.

At about 2:30 p.m. (eastern time) on June 13, demolition crew arrived at the stable located at 428 Jersey Avenue and began to unload heavy equipment which will be used to demolish the building. This came as a surprise to residents, as demolition was not supposed to start until Monday June 16.

During the early afternoon hours on June 11, the Buffalo Fire Department was called to scene after residents called 9-1-1 stating that part of the building had collapsed. Material from the building fell into the yards of at least three neighboring houses. Some of the bricks landed inside the building, while some fell into the yards of some houses behind homes on Richmond Avenue, leaving a ‘V’ shape.

At about 3:30 p.m. crews began to demolish a small portion of the stable located behind Joe Murray’s home, a resident who lives behind a portion of the building on Jersey and Richmond avenues. While demolition was taking place, the section collapsed into Murray’s backyard, prompting a call to police. Some residents who own home surrounding the building were inside Murray’s house holding a neighborhood meeting when demolition began. No one was injured when the section collapsed.

“[The building] can come down any minute,” stated Donna Berry of the Buffalo Police Department who also added that when police arrived on scene, they immediately put a stop to demolition, fearing the safety of surrounding residents and pedestrians.

“So many [of the] people [living around the building] are at risk, it makes me want to cry,” added Berry.

Police, local politicians and area residents are concerned that demolition crews and the city are not taking the proper precautions to ensure the safety of residents during demolition.

“[There is] no protection for neighbors. [This is] appalling and beyond negligence,” stated Tim Tielman, Executive Director of the Campaign for Buffalo who was referring to the negligence of the demolition crew.

“[In order to stop demolition] citizens must demonstrate direct harm to themselves,” added Tielman.

The city’s preservation board held an emergency meeting on Thursday to discuss the issue. Wikinews has learned that the owner of the building, Bob Freudenheim, gave the city permission to demolish the building because he would not be “rehabilitating the building anytime soon.” Freudenheim was part-owner of the Hotel Lenox at 140 North Street in Buffalo and was also an advocate to stop the Elmwood Village Hotel from being built on the corners of Forest and Elmwood Avenues in 2006 and 2007, which Wikinews extensively covered. He also financially supported a lawsuit in an attempt to stop the hotel from being built. Though it is not known exactly how long Freudenheim has owned the stable, Wikinews has learned that he was the owner while fighting to stop the hotel from being built.

Tielman states that he was in contact with Freudenheim this morning. Tielman states that Freudenheim “is not spending a dime” to have the building renovated. Tielman states that Freudenheim has offered to sell the building to any interested party for only one US dollar, but that he “flip flops [his decision] constantly,” sometimes wanting hundreds of thousands of dollars for the building. Wikinews has attempted to contact Freudenheim, but so far has been unsuccessful.

City building inspectors were also on scene evaluating the building and ensuring the safety of residents. Donald Grezebielucina states that “some people are on notice to vacate their properties”, but also stated that no other precautions were being taken other than placing “tires and scaffolding” onto the side of 430 Jersey, which sits less than eight feet from the buildings East side.

“The gas has been shut off in case we lost the building, so there would be no explosions or anything like that. It’s so unstable, the structural integrity is gone. The chemical composite of the trusses has changed dramatically and dry rotted. There are three vehicles in the basement which totally disappeared,” stated Grezebielucina to the press while protesters yelled “save our building, save our neighborhood.”

Wikinews has also learned that local residents have consulted a lawyer regarding the issue, and hope to petition the New York State Supreme court to issue an injunction to stop demolition. They states that Freudenheim should be “100% responsible” for his actions, and many are afraid that once the building is demolished, Freudenheim’s charges of neglect will be abolished. Freudenheim is facing housing violations for neglecting the building. Though residents are fighting, Tielman states that “an injunction is unlikely.”

“We had a letter of violation against him. He was supposed to have started work to stabilize the brick this Monday. We all hope this building could be saved. But we’ve got five houses evacuated and we cannot tolerate any further delay. We’ve got to get people back into their homes in a safe condition,” said Richard Tobe, Commissioner of the city’s Permit and Inspection Services.

Demolition is set to resume at 8:00 a.m.in the morning of Saturday June 14.

Mike Lombardo, the Commissioner for the Buffalo Fire Department, believes that the building was built in 1812 or 1814, making it nearly 200 years old. It is one of only three stables still standing in the city.

Bank Marketing: The Answer To Your Sales And Customer Relations Needs

Filed under: Public Relations — Admin @ 3:53 pm, .

Submitted by: Hannelore Willingham

Are you having trouble looking for the best marketing tools for your bank? Are you having difficulties establishing a niche and compete with rival banks? If yes, you are not alone because other banks out there experienced the same problem like you do.

What is bank marketing?

Bank marketing is the scheme used by banks to establish a niche, to increase customer base, to promote customer loyalty, to increase sales and to win over rival banks. Each company uses different sets of marketing tactics for maintaining existing customers, attracting new customer base and enhancing their reputation.

When designing a marketing strategy, companies should plan carefully and study their target market to know what tactics suit them best.

With the stiff competition nowadays, banks are looking for unique tools to get ahead and to attract new customers. Just like any type of business around, they must come up with an effective and unique marketing schemes to market and to promote their products and services. Majority of them offer the same products and services such as savings accounts, checking accounts, loans and certificate of deposits, thus, they find it difficult to convince customers and to differentiate their products from other banks. They have to come up with strategies on how to attract customers to bank with them. Providing the same products and services are some of the challenges they have to endure and need to address. It is very challenging for them to find an effective marketing tool and to convince probable customers on the uniqueness of their products and services and to take a lead ahead of other banks.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C32V4-P0idA[/youtube]

All of them want to attract new and additional clients to avail of the products and services they offer. They have to decide which marketing strategy suits them best.

Below are different marketing tools suitable for banks:

1. Advertising Banks used advertisements in radios, televisions, newspapers, magazines, yellow pages and journals in promoting their products and services.

2. Brochures/flyers Some financial institutions used flyers and brochures to advertise their products. Most of these promotional files are placed near the deposit and withdrawal slips while some are given by marketing associates during product promotions. In some banks, flyers and brochures are placed in one corner and only interested customers pick and read them.

3. Billboards and banners Some banks posted their unique services on banners and billboards.

4. Online marketing Some banks promoted their products and services online.

5. Incentives Some companies offer promotional products and incentives to new customers like discount cards in stores, giveaways and other items.

6. Public relations It is the most effective means of promoting the banks services and products to new customers. Once clients are satisfied with the products and services that banks offer, they promote them to their friends, colleagues and relatives. Always remember that good public relations, quality customer service and praise worthy reputation are the primary reasons why customers stay in a particular bank.

7. Online banking With the busy and hectic schedules and majority of us have, we prefer to bank with financial institutions which offer online banking services.

Aside from following the marketing strategies mentioned beforehand, banks need to be sensitive to the needs of their existing customers and probable clients.

Public smoking ban in Virginia snuffed out

Friday, February 24, 2006

The Virginia legislature’s House of Delegates voted unanimously in a sub-committee to kill a bill that would ban public smoking in the Mid-Atlantic state. The vote was reached during a six-member sub-committee meeting on Thursday.

The Virginia Senate, the upper house of the General Assembly, passed on Monday a week ago a bill that would ban the indoor smoking of tobacco in restaurants, bowling alleys, and other public places, including workplaces. The bill was not expected to pass the House, but the thumbs up signal by the Senate signaled a shift in tolerance towards the product in a state known for its 400-year economic history steeped in the cultivation of the cash crop.

The General Laws sub-committee based its vote on the rights of property owners, rights that would be violated by a state-wide ban. The debate was largely centered on the issue of restaurant smoking. The committee noted there was no law that said a restaurant must allow smoking.

“They have a right not to go where people are smoking,” said delegate John Cosgrove (R-Chesapeake). He noted the consumer and the restaurant businesses can decide whether to allow smoking. “They have a right and responsibility to take care of themselves,” he said.

A Virginia Beach restaurant owner, Matt Falvey, said “The plain truth is that the majority of our citizens do not smoke, and do not want to be around smoke,” according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Falvey, who owns three restaurants, said “In addition, restaurant workers should not be subjected to the harm caused by secondhand smoke.”

Falvey said he has smoking sections in his restaurants because not to would put him at a competitive disadvantage with other restaurants that have smoking sections. An across the board state-wide ban would level the playing field by settling the issue.

Senate Bill 649, known as the Virginia Indoor Clean Air Act, to become law in the nation’s 4th largest tobacco growing state would require passage by the House. Last year, the Senate killed a similar bill to ban indoor smoking in public places. New procedural rules introduced in Virginia this year allow a bill’s passage to be blocked by sub-committee, but there remains a slim chance it could be revived.

The original version of the bill, which allowed cities and counties to decide locally on the issue, was voted down by the Senate. The bill was brought back by Brandon Bell of Roanoke County, and passed in a revised version that would make than ban state-wide, with no local authority on the issue. The measure was passed by the Senate in a 21 – 18 vote, after it received the support from the Virginia Restaurant Association.

In Maryland, a similar ban was voted down this week by a House committee. New Jersey is the latest state to join the ranks of a total of 11 states that ban smoking in restaurants, bars, and workplaces.

Soybean over-took tobacco as Virginia’s top cash crop in 2005.
