Inspectors close Chicago landmark Healthy Food restaurant after finding dead mouse in cooler

Saturday, April 2, 2005

Chicago city inspectors closed the landmark Lithuanian restaurant Healthy Food on Thursday, after finding mouse feces on the meat slicer and cutting board, and a dead mouse in the cooler.

The restaurant has operated at 3236 S. Halsted, on the south side of the city in the Bridgeport neighborhood, since the 1930s.

Wikinews reporter David Vasquez placed a call to the restaurant to inquire if they were open. The call was answered by a woman who said, “No, we’re closed. There’s some technical difficulties. I’m sorry. Thank you for calling.” A second phone could be heard ringing in the background.

Streets and Sanitation spokesman Matt Smith told the Chicago Sun-Times, “To reopen, they’re going to have to present us with a revamped game plan for not only rodent control but also housekeeping, they’ll have to make all the corrections that our inspectors point out,” he continued, “and pass a very stringent follow-up inspection.”

Patrons have praised the restaurant’s sauerkraut soup and other dishes over the years. Before it was closed, the restaurant had a lot of traffic from the nearby Cook County Circuit Court. The restaurant was once voted “Best Ethnic Eastern European Restaurant in Chicago”, according to New City.

Why Designer Glasses Frames In Manhattan From Boutique Shops Remain Popular

byadmin

Even though people who need their vision corrected have more options than ever, many continue to buy stylish Glasses Frames in Manhattan from boutique shops. In fact, this particular option is becoming more preferable with so many attractive designs available today.

Shying Away From Laser Surgery

Laser surgery for correcting vision has increased in popularity but has not taken off the way eye doctors expected it would. People, in general, seem a bit skittish about having elective surgery on this part of their anatomy. In surveys, less than half the respondents who wear glasses say they would even consider laser eye surgery.

Giving up Contact Lenses

About six times as many nearsighted people wear glasses all the time compared with contact lenses. Contacts tend to be more popular among people in their 30s and younger. Eyes that become drier with age is a common problem, making contact lenses less comfortable. Some individuals simply get tired of the hassle of dealing with contacts for many years. With a wide variety of impressive Glasses Frames in Manhattan available, they know they’ll continue to look attractive while wearing spectacles.

Avoiding Cheap Discount Frames

Cheap discount frames are available from retailers, but many consumers would rather wear better products from well-known designers. They like the way they look in those frames that are provided at a store such as Charlotte Jones Opticians. They appreciate knowing that they are sporting a fashion accessory created by a talented and respected celebrity designer or endorsed by a celebrity.

Choosing Prescription Lenses for Age-Related Presbyopia

By middle age, most individuals start experiencing a certain level of trouble focusing up close. Even if they don’t need corrective lenses for nearsightedness, they must buy glasses to help them read and do other tasks requiring close-up vision.

Cheap non-prescription reading glasses are available in many stores, but lenses that precisely address the person’s degree of difficulty are better. In addition, a vision exam often finds a slight amount of nearsightedness that can be corrected with the same prescription lenses. That small amount of magnification for both problems makes a big difference in how well these people see.

Study: Children who socialise more, get cancer less

Monday, April 25, 2005

Children who spend more time playing with other children are less likely to end up getting childhood cancers, a UK study published today in the British Medical Journal has found. The finding supports the researchers’ theory that reduced exposure to common infections in the first year of life increases the risk of developing acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL).

A total of nearly 10,000 children took part in the study, located in 10 regions across the UK. Amount of time spent in daycare and social activity, during the first year of life, were used to gauge the level of exposure of the infants to common infections such as cold and flu.

Day care in the first year of life for at least two days a week, with at least three other kids, halved a child’s chance of contracting ALL. Those who were rated in the category “any social activity” still had an improvement over the children rated as “no social activity”: they had about 3/4 the chance of getting the disease.

The study describes that effect was “more striking” for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia — a cancer affecting blood and the immune system — than it was for the set of all other cancers. Increasing levels of activity saw decreasing chances of childhood cancers, when compared against children who during their first year had no regular social activity outside the home.

Theories have been around since the 1940s that childhood exposure to infection was related to the development of childhood leukaemia — one, like the working theory of the UK study, said that lack of immune challenge was a factor, another that leukaemia developed as a delayed result of some type of infection.

The research was conducted by the Institute of Cancer Research in London and in Sutton, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of York, Christie Hospital and Central Manchester and Manchester Children’s University Hospitals NHS Trusts, and the University of Edinburgh.

Afghanistan suicide bomb leaves seven Americans dead

Thursday, December 31, 2009

A suicide bomber attacked an American base in the Khowst region on the Pakistani border of Afghanistan, leaving seven American CIA officers dead and six injured. No American or NATO military personnel were killed or injured in the attack on Forward Operating Base Chapman.

It appears that the suicide bomber, reportedly wearing an Afghan National Army uniform, blew himself up in either the gym or the dining facility of Base Chapman.

In a statement on the Voice of Jihad web page, the Taliban claimed responsiblity for the attack, alleging 20 “CIA employees” were killed in the incident.

The Chapman Base is a converted military base which is now being used for civilian reconstruction operations, although military personnel are still located on the base. Camp Salerno, the main base in the Khowst province, has been the target of many attacks in recent weeks.

Recent attacks have been focused on foreign civilians, such as an incident in October in which 7 foreign and 3 Afghan civilians were killed in an attack at a UN guest house. The CIA has not lost this many operatives in nearly 25 years and the last time CIA agents were killed was in 2003.

Six Safety Guidelines During Camping

Submitted by: Nicole Munoz

Camping is fun. There is no doubt about that. But as harmless as camping may seem compared to extreme sports and activities like bungee jumping or rock climbing, you still need to always be cautious about your safety during a camping trip.

Below are some safety guidelines to ensure that you have an enjoyable and safe camping experience.

1. Buy durable and high quality camping gears that you can rely on even during trying times. Don t opt for cheap camping equipment just to save a couple of cents because you ll be in bigger trouble if your poor quality tent falls apart in the middle of a sudden storm. For example, Coleman can guarantee you of sturdy camping gears that will make you feel that you re always in safe hands.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u32erVMfvhY[/youtube]

2. Don t leave food unattended in the camping site for this may attract bears. If only bears are like Yogi Bear who just steals picnic baskets and makes funny wisecracks afterwards, then you don t have any problem. But it s different in real life. Close encounters with bears and other wild forest creatures is one thing you want to avoid during camping trips. Be sure to put away any leftover food or food container before you go back to your tent or before you go to sleep.

3. Don t eat inside the tent. This is a precaution to avoid the small but terrible insects like ants that will follow trails of crumbs inside your tent and will possibly feast on your skin on too. So if you don t want to be waken up in the middle of the night or to wake up the next day with red stinging ant bites on your body, say no to a late evening snack inside the tent.

4. Speaking of insects, another kind you should protect yourself from are mosquitoes which are common residents in forest areas. These dreadful insects being as tiny as they are can cause different kinds of diseases like malaria and dengue. Be sure to pack sufficient insect repellent and to bring a tent with mesh screens to protect yourself from mosquito bites.

5. Never use or even attempt to light up candles or gas lanterns inside your tent. This is extremely dangerous and may start a fire. Opt for safe catalytic heaters like the Coleman SportCat Perfectemp Catalytic Heater with InstaStart Technology designed for indoor use or to be used in enclosed areas such as a tent. It is a good idea to place this heater in an elevated area like on top of a cooler so that it does not come in contact with the tent s floor and minimizes the risk of you rolling over on it as you sleep. Keep it at least two feet away from anything that can be harmed by heat.

6. Pick a safe and well known campsite. Don t go for deserted areas that are very far from civilization. There are many camping parks that have guards to keep you safe even at night. But if you re the adventurous type who loves to go camping in the middle of the forest, it is wise to choose spots that are recommended by fellow campers or have been tried by friends and family.

Remember, to always opt for the safe side. As they say, it s always better safe than sorry.

Tropical Storm Danny to threaten the U.S. East Coast this weekend

Wednesday, August 26, 2009

The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) has declared an area of disturbed weather north of Puerto Rico Tropical Storm Danny today, skipping the tropical depression stage.

A statement by the NHC said “a general northwestward motion with a decrease in forward speed is expected today and Thursday, with a turn toward the north-northwest expected on Friday.” This path should bring Danny near the North Carolina early this weekend, and possibly threatening the New England region by Sunday. While the storm is currently weak and disorganized, forecasters say the storm could reach Category 1 intensity on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. However, it is not expected to be as strong as the previous storm, Hurricane Bill.

At this point we are monitoring the storm

The center’s most recent forecast discussion on the tropical storm said “The forecast track is roughly parallel to the U.S. East Coast…and any deviation from the track could make a large difference in what areas get impacted by Danny”.

Some residents in the northeast U.S. are already monitoring Danny. Long Island, recovering from coastal flooding just last week as Hurricane Bill passed offshore, might suffer another hit.

Danny is currently situated about 445 mi (715 km) east of Nassau, Bahamas, and has winds of 45 mph (75 km/h). It is moving west-northwest at 16 kt. All interests along the East Coast are urged to keep an eye on the developing storm over coming days.

Buffalo, New York —The preliminary hearing for a lawsuit filed against the Elmwood Village Hotel proposal in Buffalo, New York as well as the City of Buffalo has been postponed indefinitely and will take place “as needed” pending the resubmission of the proposal by Savarino Construction also of Buffalo. A request was made to New York State Supreme court Judge Justice Rose Sconiers, the judge to preside over the case, to discuss a “timetable” for resubmission, but the court “decided not to,” said attorney Arthur Giacalone who represents the plaintiffs in the lawsuit.

The hotel would require the demolition of at least five properties, 1109-1121 Elmwood and would cause the closure of several businesses. Already, two businesses, Skunk Tail Glass and Six Nations Native American Gift Shop have relocated, outside the Elmwood Strip. Don apparel, H.O.D. Tattoo and Mondo Video still remain on Elmwood; however, Mondo Video is planning on moving to a new location. The hotel will be 72 rooms and will cost at least 7 million dollars to build. Wyndham Hotels is expected to be the owner/operator of the hotel. The properites are currently owned by Hans Mobius. Two other properties, 605 and 607 Forest might also be part of the proposal. 605 Forest is owned by Pano Georgiadis, owner of Pano’s Restaurant on Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo. 607 Forest is owned by Mobius.

“There’s no new [court] date. The next appearance will be as needed,” said Giacalone.

The proposal was withdrawn by Savarino on July 13, 2006 to undergo “a do-over” and according to the Buffalo News, “shed the lawsuits” against the proposal; however, so far the proposal has “not yet” been resubmitted, but could be in about a “week.”

“With Council being out of session we have a bit of time [before resubmitting]. [We will] Probably resubmit] in a week or so,” said Sam Savarino, CEO of Savarino Construction.

“We welcome some discourse on this project and while we realize that, in all likelihood, we will not make everybody happy, we hope we can develop a consensus that what we provide on that corner will be something that is an enhancement to the neighborhood and the community. Better to have that decided (again?) in a public forum and through the approval process than through a debate over points of law in a courtroom,” added Savarino.

Despite the withdraw of the proposal, Giacalone states that the lawsuit his clients filed is still in effect due to the re-zoning of the properties, which he says are still in place and that he is “frustrated” that his client’s “day in court” has been delayed continuously by Savarino and the city.

Savarino believes that the re-zoning of the properties are “not in effect” because the proposal was withdrawn. He also stated that he is “unsure” on a decision to request the rezoning again because the “city suggested” the rezoning “last time.”

“We have pulled the request [proposal] so I would suppose it [the rezoning] is not in effect. We are as of yet unsure of whether or not to request rezoning of all the parcels. We are communicating with the City on this. You may recall that the City suggested this to us last time. We want to make sure we are doing the correct thing – and the proper thing. I am not sure whether I have a clear indication of that at this juncture,” said Savarino.

Savarino was asked if the proposal was going to be resubmitted or not, but did not answer the question.

Giacalone states that there may be several resons as to why “a new application has not been filed. Is Savarino having a hard time coming to an agreement with Mobius? Has Wyndham Hotels backed out? Is Savarino negotiating with Pano to buy the [605] Forest Avenue property?”

Buffalo’s Common Council is scheduled to meet on September 9, 2006 after Summer recess.

Israel plans crackdown on West Bank settlement outposts

Friday, January 4, 2008

Israel is planning measures to curb settlement activity in the occupied territories in response to pressure from the United States.

Vice Premier Haim Ramon told Israel Radio that he expects the government to take action against the outposts during and after the visit of President Bush to Israel and the West Bank next week.

The outposts are often built on West Bank hilltops, and usually consist of a few trailers or makeshift structures. Israel is obligated to dismantle about 100 outposts under the internationally backed “Roadmap” peace plan, which forms the basis of new negotiations with the Palestinians. But most of the outposts remain in place despite past pledges by Israel to remove them.

The new pledge by Mr. Ramon appears to be a response to American pressure. On Thursday, President Bush described Jewish settlements as an “impediment” to the peace process, and said the outposts should be dismantled.

The settlers accuse the Israeli government of betrayal, saying it is caving in to the dictates of the United States. Settlement activist Nadia Matar promises fierce resistance if soldiers and police try to remove the outposts.

“We must organize to prevent [the] giving away of our homeland to the Arab enemy,” she said, “and the message is very clear: We are a generation of committed Jews, who do not fear internal or external enemies of the Jewish people.”
