Wikinews extended invitations by e-mail on March 23 to multiple candidates running in the Texas’ 6th congressional district special election of May 1 to fill a vacancy left upon the death of Republican congressman Ron Wright. Of them, the office of Democrat Daryl Eddings, Sr. agreed to answer some questions by phone March 30 about their campaigns and policies. The following is the interview with Ms Chatham on behalf of Mr Eddings, Sr.

Eddings is a federal law enforcement officer and senior non-commissioned officer in the US military. His experience as operations officer of an aviation unit in the California National Guard includes working in Los Angeles to control riots sparked by the O. J. Simpson murder case and the police handling of Rodney King, working with drug interdiction teams in Panama and Central America and fighting in the Middle East. He is the founder of Operation Battle Buddy, which has under his leadership kept in touch with over 20 thousand veterans and their families. He was born in California, but moved to Midlothian, Texas. He endeavours to bring “good government, not no government”. Campaign manager Faith Chatham spoke to Wikinews on matters ranging from healthcare to housing.

An Inside Elections poll published on March 18 shows Republican candidate Susan Wright, the widow of Ron Wright, is ahead by 21% followed by Democrat Jana Sanchez with 17% and Republican Jake Ellzey with 8% with a 4.6% margin of error among 450 likely voters. The district is considered “lean Republican” by Inside Elections and voted 51% in favour of Donald Trump in last year’s US presidential election. This is down from 54% for Trump in 2016’s presidential election, the same poll stated.

The Benefits Of Usps Mailing Software In A Direct Marketing World

Filed under: International Tax Specialists — Admin @ 3:03 pm, .

byadmin

Even with the economy moving in an upward movement, there are a number of companies that are still looking for ways to save both money and time. This is while at the same time the United States Postal Service, or USPS, is announcing additional shrinkage of their mail volume, with losses reaching the billions and long-term budget problems, the industry of direct marketing is searching for new ways to get more for all of their mailing bucks. A solution: USPS Mailing Software.

This is a type of software where the application programs have been offered as a service and hosted on a server. The clients then operate this software through a secure connection. It will help to reduce the overall costs because there will be a number of decreases in capital expenditures for software and hardware, as well as the labor expenses that are related to the maintenance of the software and hardware.

Even though these types of software programs have been around for a number of years, they are now becoming mainstream for the marketing and direct mail arena. The mailing software vendors offer a number of programs that have been designed for processing your entire mailings from the start to completion, including: the conversions of files; sorting; correction of addresses; and standardization. It also includes features such as move updating, merge and purge, presorting and the print production.

When the software is used, the applications will be accessed from the user’s computer, but will be running on a server in another location. The process is conducted in the same manner it would be if it was a native program on the user’s computer. When the job is completed processing, then the files and the various reports are able to be viewed prior to sending them to the viewer.

When you are considering using this type of software, it can benefit your business a great deal. It will save you labor, time and money. You can feel confident that the information you have is accurate and the mailings, no matter if they are sent via email or direct mail, will reach their desired destination. When you do this, you will be able to streamline this entire process and ensure that you are getting the most for your mailing dollar, which is important for businesses of all sizes.

Ukrainian manufacturer preparing to sell Adolf Hitler dolls

Thursday, April 24, 2008

Correction — May 3, 2008 This article has been retracted. This article has been deemed a hoax. Please see the follow up article, Hitler doll story found to be hoaxed, for more information.

News reports are claiming that dolls depicting former Nazi leader Adolf Hitler will go on sale in Ukraine. These reports cite Ukraine’s Zerkalo Nedeli newspaper which reported that a toy manufacturer would release the line of Hitler dolls in the summer.

The 40cm doll will reportedly first be available in Kiev with a £100 (GBP) price tag and comes with a large range of accessories in a presentation box with the dates of Hitler’s birth and death.

Nazis images are illegal in Ukraine, with positive portrayal specifically banned. However, there are allegations that right-wing nationalist politics are gaining strength in the country and that xenophobia and racism are on the rise, including some said to be comparable to that present in Germany under Nazi rule. Fascism and propaganda are also banned.

When the former Soviet Union, including Ukraine, was invaded by Germany under Hitler’s rule 2–3 million Ukrainians were among the casualties, of which 1.5 million were Jews.

Adolf can be dressed in various guises, including “early days Adolf”, which consists of a brown shirt and jodhpurs, and “Wartime Adolf”, which features a grey tunic, black trousers and the Iron Cross medal. The doll also comes with boots and shoes, caps, gloves, full uniforms, cane and belt which can be placed on Hitler, whose arms move, allowing the doll to replicate the famed salute of its real life counterpart.

Kids can undress fuhrer, pin on medals and there’s a spare head in the kit to give him a kinder expression on his face

Also included is a model of Blondi, Hitler’s female German Shepherd, who was exceedingly loyal to Hitler. Hitler poisoned Blondi with cyanide in 1945 at the same time as taking his own life in his bunker at Berlin.

“It is like Barbie. Kids can undress fuhrer, pin on medals and there’s a spare head in the kit to give him a kinder expression on his face. He has glasses that are round, in the manner of pacifist John Lennon,” said one saleswoman. The company, which will release the dolls in Summer, says that if demand is high a range of toys themed on the Third Reich may be released, to include barracks, working models of crematoriums and gas chambers, concentration camps and interior models of the chancellery.

The doll is not set to be released until the summer, but BBC News Online has footage suggesting that some stores are selling the doll already.

Tom Cruise debates psychiatry on NBC’s Today show

Saturday, June 25, 2005

In an interview on NBC’s Today show with Matt Lauer, Tom Cruise aggressively defended his opposition to psychiatry and anti-depressive drugs. This occurred after being asked questions about his criticism of Brooke Shields, who has been taking drugs, including Paxil, for postpartum depression. Cruise is usually known for keeping his cool in interviews, but recently he has been slightly more unbound.

Cruise’s statements, including “Psychiatry is a pseudoscience“, and “There is no such thing as a chemical imbalance in a body”, reflect the beliefs of the Church of Scientology, of which he is a member. The interview became particularly tense when Lauer mentioned that he knew people who had been helped by taking Ritalin, an attention-deficit disorder drug.

“Matt, Matt, you don’t even — you’re glib,” Cruise responded. “You don’t even know what Ritalin is. If you start talking about chemical imbalance, you have to evaluate and read the research papers on how they came up with these theories, Matt, OK. That’s what I’ve done.”

Cruise went on to say: “You don’t know the history of psychiatry, I do.”

Cruise has not formally studied medicine beyond a high school education, having dropped out in his senior year (1980) to pursue an acting career. In light of this, some members of the psychiatric community have refuted Cruise’s controversial statements. Dr. John Scully, medical director of the American Psychiatric Association, has said “The illnesses we treat – anxiety, depression – are very real illnesses…The treatments work. We have demonstrated that through robust scientific study.”

Lauer insisted that Ritalin helped people: “You’re telling me what’s worked for people I know or hasn’t worked for people I know. I’m telling you, I’ve lived with these people and they’re better,” Lauer said.

Cruise hinted that Lauer was promoting Ritalin and Lauer scoffed: “I am not. I’m telling you in their cases, in their individual case, it worked.”

The exchange ended when the two basically agreed to disagree. Cruise, who is 42, did admit that one of his goals is to speak more about Scientology in an effort to get people to understand it better.

Scientology has historically been at odds with the established medical and mental health community. The rift dates back to the 1950s and Scientology’s founding father L. Ron Hubbard. In his book, “Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health”, published in 1950, Hubbard claims that Dianetics (later called Scientology) could cure the majority of human ailments. These claims were sharply disputed by a variety of mainstream science and medical professionals including psychiatrists.

On Monday, June 27, 2005, the American Psychiatric Association released a statement that stated the following:”It is irresponsible for Mr. Cruise to use his movie publicity tour to promote his own ideological views and deter people with mental illness from getting the care they need…Rigorous, published, peer-reviewed research clearly demonstrates that treatment (of mental illness) works…It is unfortunate that in the face of this remarkable scientific and clinical progress that a small number of individuals and groups persist in questioning its legitimacy.”

The APA represents nearly 36,000 physicians specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.

Battle for Trafalgar Square, London as violence breaks out between demonstrators and riot police

Monday, March 28, 2011

Sunday morning showed Trafalgar Square, London damaged during the night by demonstrators.

Bottles, cans, and placards littered the concrete ground of one of the most iconic landmarks in London. Demonstrators livid at government cuts had sprayed graffiti on the four bronze lions. “No-one rules if no-one obeys,” one message, next to the symbol of anarchy, read. On the steps leading up to the National Gallery lay placards, dropped by demonstrators the night before. Hours earlier the square was an arena for running battles between the anarchist protesters and riot police.

First, they targetted Oxford Street, arguably the most famous shopping row in the city. The protesters, many dressed in black, hurled smoke bombs and paint at Topshop, which they claimed has systematically abused the tax system. In Piccadilly, they ransacked The Ritz, a hotel popularly known for upmarket opulence. As darkness fell over the capital, many went home. But in Trafalgar Square, protesters lit campfires and danced to music, smoking and eating into the night.

But then the police moved in. Clad in riot gear, the situation began to escalate and both they and the demonstrators began to panic. They raised their batons and shouted at the crowd, while the protesters grabbed metal barriers and hurled them over police lines, using them as battering rams. Some protesters yelled in defence, “Don’t hit us!”, while the more determined shouted, “Shame on you! Your job’s next!” The riot officers pushed protesters into the centre of the square, towards Nelson’s Column. The police started forward at least twice swinging their batons in the air, as protesters retaliated by throwing glass bottles and coins towards the police lines. One officer was taken away with blood pouring from under his visor.

“I have never seen such a fast escalation of violence in my life,” one witness to the violence in the square said. “Everything just kicked off, glass everywhere, police hitting people, people being dragged across the floor. I just can’t believe it.” Other protesters on the front line later described the police retaliation as they began to kettle people in. “I find myself in front of the riot line,” one protester wrote, “taking a blow to the head and a kick to the shin; I am dragged to my feet by a girl with blue hair who squeezes my arm and then raises a union flag defiantly at the cops.”

Everything just kicked off, glass everywhere, police hitting people, people being dragged across the floor. I just can’t believe it.

Fireworks exploded overhead and, towards midnight, the number of protesters had diminished. As the kettling began, many of them slipped away into the night. In the early hours of the morning, the levels of violence began to fade. “Vandalism has been committed and officers have come under sustained attack,” the Metropolitan Police said. “We are holding everyone here until the situation calms down and we determine who is responsible.”

As the street cleaners worked through the morning in London, more than 200 protesters, detained throughout the day, remained in custody. Although the organisers of the march were swift to disassociate themselves with the violence, the protesters were defiant. “I’m not moving, I’m not moving,” one young protester, hemmed in by the riot police, said. “I’ve been on every protest, I won’t let this government destroy our future without a fight. I won’t stand back, I’m not moving.”

How Much Is Car Insurance Going To Cost?

Submitted by: Jim Bassett

In this current state of the economy, a growing number of people are dropping or greatly reducing their auto insurance in an attempt to get their budgets under control. With more uninsured and under insured drivers on the road, it can be dangerous for all drivers and passengers involved. But many car owners are wondering how much is car insurance going to affect their household budget.

Many people may feel the urge to purchase the bare minimum of insurance that is required by their state. The law regulates the minimum requirements; however it doesn’t mean that these are the recommended standards for all people. Drivers, who are involved in accidents, whether it is their fault or another driver’s fault, may not be fully covered if only the minimum insurance is obtained. It is recommended that many factors are considered- price and condition of your car, total asset value including your house and the driving ability of every person in the household-before selecting the right car insurance.

Most states require that liability insurance is purchased and the amount varies according to your state. Bodily injury liability will protect you if you cause injury or death while driving your car. In the case of a serious accident, enough liability should be purchased in case you are sued, to protect your personal assets from being seized or compromised. Bodily injury liability covers injury to people, not vehicle damage, and is typically used to cover medical expenses of the injured. It is generally recommended that you purchase $100,000 (per person)/$300,000 (per accident) limits of bodily injury liability. However, if you do not have much personal assets (if you do not own a house, for example) the minimum requirements for liability insurance might be a good risk for you to take.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP), no-fault, or Medical Payments coverage pays for the medical expenses, lost wages and other costs incurred of the injured driver and passengers in your car. There may also be coverage if you are injured by a vehicle as a pedestrian. PIP is required in some, but not all, states. If your medical health insurance and disability insurance adequately covers medical expenses and lost wages, the minimum coverage can be selected for PIP. It’s important to read and understand what is covered by your health and car insurance in regards to medical treatment.

Uninsured motorists coverage pays for your medical bills if an uninsured driver or hit-and run driver hits you. Similarly, underinsured motorists coverage insures you in the event that the motorist who strikes you does not have enough insurance for your medical bills. Given the large number of uninsured motorists, this coverage is beneficial, even in states with no-fault insurance. Uninsured/underinsured auto insurance coverage is optional, and can be declined by the driver. However, before declining this coverage, you should take into consideration whether you live in a state with statistically higher numbers of drivers who carry little or no auto insurance.

Collision and comprehensive auto insurance coverage is responsible for a majority of the car insurance premium. Collision coverage pays for damages to your car when your car hits, or is hit by, another vehicle or other object. The larger the deductible (amount you have to pay out of pocket towards damages, before insurance starts to pay), the lower the insurance premium. If you wish to lower premiums, you should select as large a deductible that you would be able or willing to pay in the event of an accident. If you own an older model car (typically more than 10 years old), you could consider dropping this coverage, since coverage is generally limited to the cash value of your car. If you own an expensive or newer car, this coverage is important in order to protect the value of your car in case damage should occur.

Comprehensive coverage pays for losses resulting from incidents not involving a collision with another car. For instance, comprehensive insurance covers damage to your car if it is stolen or if damaged by flood or fire. To lower premiums, you should select as high a deductible as you feel comfortable paying up front. Collision and comprehensive insurance is usually required by law, with each state setting the minimum amount of coverage needed.

It may be easy to try and cut corners when it comes to car insurance by purchasing the bare minimum. However, car accidents are common and can result in large medical and car repair bills. Car owners should realize that the question is not how much is car insurance going to cost them, but how much is car insurance going to save them in the event of a catastrophe. It is important to perform a proper risk assessment which takes into account your driving ability, local traffic environment, current health insurance policy, and other household members to determine what coverage is needed. Then, in case of an accident, there will be a better chance that your out-of-pocket expenses will be covered and your assets protected.

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Sulpicio Lines pay PHP6.2 million for death of man in 1998 ferry disaster

Thursday, July 3, 2008

Sulpicio Lines, a ferry company in the Philippines, have been ordered to pay PH?6.24 million over the death of a man on board MV Princess of the Orient, which sank in stormy weather off Batangas in 1998. Ernesto Unabia was one of seventy confirmed fatalities in the disaster, which left eighty more missing.

Unabia was a 37-year-old seaman who worked on international vessels, and earned a ?120,000 salary. According to widow Verna Unabia, who filed the case with her three children, he was going to work on for thirteen more years and then retire. Unabia’s case is the first to be concluded, although most victims settled with Sulpicio without claims being filed.

Although Sulpicio lost their appeal several weeks ago, reporters have only today received access to documentation concerning the case.

Under Philippines law, employers are responsible for their employees actions. However, in Pestaño vs. Sumayang the Supreme court ruled that if it could be proved an employer had taken appropriate diligence when selecting employers then they could not be held responsible.

It was viewed that Sulpicio was responsible as they failed to remove captain Esrum Mahilum from the vessel despite a number of incidents involving the ferry while he was in command of it. Princess of the Orient had struck the bottom of Manila‘s North Harbour, sideswiped a container ship and suffered a crippling engine fire while berthed at North Harbour, being towed first to Cebu and ultimately Singapore for repairs.

Despite these serious incidents while the ship was under Mahilum’s care, however, he was not removed from captaincy or even disciplined. A Board of Marine Inquiry (BMI) investigation into the ultimate sinking of the Princess of the Orient would later say that Sulpicio did not have enough initiative to take action against him. The court ruled this made them responsible for his actions.

On September 18, 1998, the day of the sinking, Captain Mahilum was warned before starting out that severe weather was approaching. He wrongly calculated that the storm was safely distanced and left port regardless, running into the storm two hours later. Princess of the Orient began listing to the left and a distress call was sent, but she sank before help arrived. The BMI’s report blamed the disaster on the captain making “erroneous maneuvers of the vessel before it sank.” He remains missing to this day.

After the court ruled that this made Sulpicio liable to pay civil damages an appeal was filed, in which Sulpicio said that the captain “valiantly tried to save his ship up to the bitter end. He heroically went down with his ship.” Although he failed to properly supervise the abandon ship order he gave, he was last seen helping passengers to board life rafts. Sulpicio further alleged that careful analysis of the BMI report showed he did not directly cause the disaster.

The court rejected the appeal, with judge Estella Alma Singco saying that while the failure to remove the captain wasn’t the direct cause, “such failure doubtless contributed materially to the loss of life.” Sulpicio were ordered to pay P6.240 million in lost earnings, P100,000 moral damages, P50,000 indemnity – which Sulpicio had already offered to all the families of the deceased – and P50,000 in pursuer’s litigation costs.

What Is A Car Locksmith?

by

Donna Fuller

Locksmithing is a traditional trade and in many countries to be a locksmith requires the completion of an apprenticeship. In Australia one must complete an Apprenticeship or Traineeship in locksmithing.

Historically locksmiths constructed and repaired entire locks but the rise of cheap mass production made for a change in the locksmithing trade. Nowadays locksmiths cover a wide range of services for customers in keeping with the technological advances of the 20th and 21st centuries.

In contemporary times locksmiths can offer a range of services and usually provide products from storefronts and mobile vans, or they specialise in niche locksmithing services including investigational or forensic locksmithing.

One of the more recent additions to the locksmith trade has been the introduction of automotive locksmiths who specialise in the locksmithing of cars; these are the locksmiths that this article is concerned with.

What does an automotive locksmith do?

Just like regular locksmiths, automotive locksmiths work involves the opening and fixing of locks, albeit exclusively with cars, trucks, and other automobiles.

Before the advent of modern electronic locks in vehicles automotive locksmiths were more concerned with the opening of locked car doors in which customers had left their keys. And while early model vehicles still abound the job of an automotive locksmith has changed in recent times. With the introduction of modern electronic locks their job has changed considerably.

So what are the main services of modern day automotive locksmiths? Here is a list of some of the main responsibilities of modern day locksmiths.

1. Extraction of broken vehicle keys from locks

2. Repairing of damaged ignition lock of the car

3. Transponder key programming

4. Repair of central locking

5. Repair of the original remote control and programming the new one to suit the car

5. Immobilizer chip programming

7. Car lock and car key repair

8. Replacement car keys where originals cannot be restored

9. Roadside assistance

10. Emergency car unlocking when keys are locked inside

Perhaps the most important and differentiating feature of the modern automotive locksmith\’s job is the amount of labour that is put into modern key system. Most of the vehicles manufactured now have a microchip in the head of the key, this is called the transponder, automotive locksmiths can duplicate this mechanism at a cost much less than the actual car dealership.

They also specialise in the repair and replacement of keys, and key housing.

So if you need help with your car\’s keys or if you have an emergency, get in touch with an automotive locksmith expert today.
