Canadian Prime Minister Harper plays small role in television show Corner Gas

Tuesday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper was filming a cameo appearance on the popular sitcom Corner Gas. Corner Gas is filmed about 40 km south of Regina in the tiny farming community of Rouleau.

Harper was filmed in a scene where he was surrounded by a large group of actors playing reporters and photographers. After completing the scene, he got back into his car and a motorcade left the town, which is called Dog River on the show.

“We can’t say much about cameo appearances, because they’re supposed to be a surprise for the viewers, but yes, there was press scrum,” Corner Gas executive producer Virginia Thompson said. “That’s all I can reveal.” “It works well for the show, actually … We were told by the Prime Minister’s Office that he had a sense of humour, but we thought we would wait and see and sure enough, yeah, he delivered.”

When Paul Martin was the leader of the government, he had a cameo on the show last season. Saskatchewan Premier Lorne Calvert has also made an appearance on the show last season.

“The prime minister was not paid for his appearance and had other reasons for coming to Saskatchewan beyond being part of the show”, said Thompson.

Reporters were kept back and not allowed to see how he performed in front of the cameras.

Harper waved goodbye to small town of Rouleau while travelling down Highway 39 away from the set after spending about 1 1/2 hours there. After, Harper planned to meet with members of his Saskatchewan caucus at a barbeque at Sherwood Forest Country Club Tuesday night. Harper is scheduled to tour the RCMP training academy in Regina today.

The episode featuring Harper will air sometime next spring.

Want To Learn To Play The Piano? Traditional Lessons Are Still Your Best Bet

In the modern day, many aspiring musicians rely heavily on sites like YouTube, both for exposure to inspiration and a potential audience of their own, and for instruction when learning to play. The widespread popularity of online tutorials has made traditional music lessons less popular with younger learners, but instructors know that there is still merit to traditional teaching styles. Whether you’re looking for piano lessons, guitar lessons or drum lessons, your best bet to make it to the concert hall may be to start in a conventional classroom.

Oldies but Goodies

Some young people believe that face-to-face music lessons are too old-fashioned for modern aspiring musicians. After all, people launch entire careers after binge-watching videos online, so why can’t musicians do the same? The truth is, music industry experts like those at Austin, Texas’s Lone Star School of Music are simply better suited to the task of teaching than a video can ever be.

The benefits of learning under an instructor are obvious when examined at length: a live person with a depth of musical knowledge can provide not only tutelage but also address the concerns of a student, answer questions and tailor lessons to the needs of the aspiring musician. Even if a video can provide basic piano lessons, it can’t address improper posture, hand positioning, or other issues that an instructor can.

Choosing an Instructor

Looking for a provider of music lessons should be a fun and exciting process, not a stressful one. Here are some tips for choosing an instructor near you:

* Ask for recommendations. Whether it’s from family, friends or music professionals in your area, reputation is a good indicator of teaching technique and quality.

* Arrange a meeting or interview, or attend a session before committing to lessons with an instructor, if possible.

When choosing an instructor, it’s important to pick one with the right experience. Inquire about their experience with your child’s age group and experience level, what qualifications the instructor has, and what services they offer. Knowing this upfront will provide you with a better idea of what you’ll be paying for later!

Danish clothing company sells T-shirts to support FARC and PFLP

Friday, January 20, 2006

A recently created Danish clothing company is selling on the internet T-shirts in order to support the clandestine radio station of the Colombian guerrilla group Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the graphical workshop of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). In fact the money will be used by these groups to carry on their terrorist activities. FARC activities include kidnappings, masacres, bombs, extortions and the drug trade.

Fighters and Lovers is selling the T-shirts at 170 DKK (US$27.6), from which 35 DKK (US$5.7) are to be destinated to support both armed groups.

Anna Duever, Fighters and Lovers PR chief, said to Spanish news agency EFE that their objective is to “defend freedom and social justice, which is FARC and PFLP are fighting for”. Duever believes the fact the FARC has been included by the EU in its terrorist group list is a “political game”. “We pay our taxes in Denmark, and that money is used for financing the troops our government has sent to Iraq. That’s terrorism. Besides, in Colombia there’s a regime oppressing population and torturing and killing its people”, she said.

Colombian Foreign Affairs Minister, Carolina Barco, said to local media that “financing terrorist groups is unacceptable and goes against all the international norms. Yesterday [Tuesday 19] our ambassador contacted the Danish government, we sent a protest note and have demanded an explanation.”

A year ago, a Danish NGO named Oprør (“Rebelion”) stated it had donated money to the Colombian guerrilla. A new antiterrorism law in Denmark may punish it.

Victoria Wyndham on Another World and another life

Victoria Wyndham was one of the most seasoned and accomplished actresses in daytime soap opera television. She played Rachel Cory, the maven of Another World‘s fictional town, Bay City, from 1972 to 1999 when the show went off the air. Wyndham talks about how she was seen as the anchor of a show, and the political infighting to keep it on the air as NBC wanted to wrest control of the long-running soap from Procter & Gamble. Wyndham fought to keep it on the air, but eventually succumbed to the inevitable. She discusses life on the soap opera, and the seven years she spent wandering “in the woods” of Los Angeles seeking direction, now divorced from a character who had come to define her professional career. Happy, healthy and with a family she is proud of, Wyndham has found life after the death of Another World in painting and animals. Below is David Shankbone’s interview with the soap diva.

Bank of England governor warns housing market is biggest threat to UK economy

The governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, has warned that the state of the housing market in the United Kingdom is the current biggest domestic threat to the country’s economy, due to lack of house building, and regulatory issues.

In an interview to be aired on Sky News today, he said the housing market is the “biggest risk” to the economy and has “deep, deep structural problems”. Of house building he said: “There are not sufficient houses built in the UK. To go back to Canada, there are half as many people in Canada as in the UK, twice as many houses are built every year in Canada as in the UK and we can’t influence that.”

“We’re not going to build a single house at the Bank of England. We can’t influence that. What we can influence […] is whether the banks are strong enough. Do they have enough capital against risk in the housing market?”

Carney also said the Bank of England would look into the procedures used to issue loans and mortgages to see if they were being granted appropriately: “We’d be concerned if there was a rapid increase in high loan-to-value mortgages across the banks. We’ve seen that creeping up and it’s something we’re watching closely.”

Kris Hopkins responded to Carney on behalf of the government, saying the government “inherited a broken housing market, but our efforts to fix it are working”. “We’ve scrapped the failed top-down planning system, built over 170,000 affordable homes and released more surplus brownfield sites for new housing. We’ve also helped homebuyers get on the housing ladder, because if people can buy homes builders will build them. Housebuilding is now at its highest level since 2007 and climbing. Last year councils gave permission for almost 200,000 new homes under the locally-led planning system and more than 1,000 communities have swiftly taken up neighbourhood planning. It’s clear evidence the government’s long-term economic plan is working.”

Earlier this month, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development called on the UK government to “tighten” access to the ‘Help to Buy’ scheme introduced by George Osborne and the coalition government in 2013. ‘Help to Buy’ has also recently been criticised by three former Chancellors of the Exchequer — the Conservatives Norman Lamont and Nigel Lawson, and former Labour Chancellor Alistair Darling. Darling said: “Unless supply can be increased substantially, we will exacerbate that situation with schemes like Help to Buy.”

“Junk” foods may affect aggressive behaviour and school performance

Tuesday, October 4, 2005

Dr. Stephen Schoenthaler, a Professor of Criminal Justice at the California State University in Stanislaus, has long argued that there is a link between a healthy diet and decreased aggressive behaviour, as well as with increased IQ and school performance.

Dr. Schoenthaler is well-known for a youth detention center study where violations of house rules fell by 37% when vending machines were removed and the cafeteria replaced canned food by fresh alternatives. He summarizes his findings by saying that “Having a bad diet right now is a better predictor of future violence than past violent behaviour.” In a very large test, Schoenthaler directed a study in meals at 803 New York City schools, in low-income neighbourhoods, finding that the number of students passing final exams increased by 16%.

Critics have questioned some of Dr. Schoenthaler findings, due to the lack of placebo control groups. However, more recent work by Dr. Bernard Gesch, a physiologist at the University of Oxford, has placed some of the work on a more scientific footing. Dr. Gesch found that nutrition supplements produced a 26% drop in violations of prison rules over a placebo, and a 37% decrease in violent offences. The Netherlands has embarked on a wider scale dietary research program in 14 prisons.

The short term behaviour consequences of ingesting sugar are well understood: an initial burst on energy, followed a sugar low in which your body produces adrenalin, which makes you irritable and explosive. However, Schoenthaler and Gesch suggest that there are long term impacts over and above the short term consequences of blood sugar variations.

I Phone Game Development: Develop Games For I Phone In 4 Simple Steps

Submitted by: Jay Valiya

This article shows how individual developers and programmers can develop games and submit them to the iPhone app store. iPhone game development has helped a number of talented and creative developers to leave their day jobs and start working on their own projects. If even a single game of yours reaches the top of the iPhone app store, you can make thousands of dollars per day. Developing an interesting game that connects with iPhone users can change your life and free you from all your financial worries and you do not have to be a hardcore programmer to develop a game for iPhone.

As long as you have a clear idea of the kind of game you wish to develop, you can train yourself to develop that game for iPhone. Follow the below mentioned steps to stop being a wannabe game developer and turn into a bona fide member of iPhone game development (with your own game on the iPhone app store!).

Get the right kind of PC, understand the iPhone SDK:

To develop games for iPhone, you require a PC with Intel Processor and MacOS X. You also need a good internet connection and the ability to use the iPhone SDK. Your PC doesn t need to be a huge, costly monster; a simple PC with a decent internet connection should do the job. You can download the iPhone SDK from its developer site for free and it got everything you need to develop and test your game: development environment Xcode, reference library, interface builder and iPhone simulator.

Learn Objective C, practice:

You cannot embark on your journey as an iPhone game developer until you have a good command over objective C. If you re already good at C/C++, all you need to do is to get acquainted with the API s of iPhone. You will easily find all the other information and assistance you need on the iPhone developers site. If you are at first step of the development ladder, you can learn programming through introductory books and Objective C tutorials. Don t get hung up on theory, start making a program with Objective C and get as much hands-on experience as you can get.

Join iPhone Developer Program, Get Ready for Hard Work:

Once you have the right idea for iPhone game development in your mind, you need to build a strong skill base to transform your ideas into an iPhone game. Join the iPhone Developer Program. You need to sign up for this program and agree to Apple s terms and conditions to put up your finished game on the app store. Also, even if you are far from finishing your iPhone game project, you will still need to register for this program to gain access to test your code on actual iPhones. Your game development process can last from up to 2 months to a year, or more so gird your loins for an intense iPhone game development effort!

Submit your game and start marketing it:

Once you are ready with the final version of your game, you need to submit it to the iPhone app store. If you complete the process without making any mistakes, the game will be accepted and put online within a week. You won t start making record sales in the first few days; you will have to market your game and make it attractive to the users. Launching a Lite free version can be a great way of making your game popular.

Book Fair 2.0; On bloggers, ebooks and pirates

Friday, October 12, 2007

The Internet is very much present at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2007, not just, like in previous years, as a means for the journalists who have 80 workplaces for their own notebooks to report on the fair, but like before as a chance – and as a threat for rights-owners of digital media.

Contents

 • 1 Bloggers in the Living Room 2.0 at the Fair
 • 2 EBooks and Digitalization
 • 3 Pirates threatening the audiobooks
 • 4 Sources

After a marginal existence in the previous year, bloggers have got their own “living room 2.0” at the fair, furnished with everything a blogger needs, including media attention. Every day from Wednesday October 10 to Sunday October 14 they will write and podcast about the big names to meet, the events not to be missed and their very personal experiences and thoughts. Three of the bloggers write in English, two English language podcasts are done, to widen the reach of the Book Fair 2.0. The blog entries and podcasts will be available until after the book fair at http://www.book-fair.com/en/wordpress/ and the bloggers themselves can be visited on the weekend at hall 4.2, Q411, though until now it is more the media and less the visitors of the fair, the bloggers come in contact with.

Digitalization and digital media, especially books and magazines offered digitally, are a hot topic at this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair, as more and more publishers want to see the digital counterparts of their traditional media not just as a field to be present in, but as a possible profit center. With scientific books, this move already was quite successful: Publishing house Springer for example, offering over 40,000 ebooks and over 1700 electronic magazines, of which over 1200 are still actively continued with Springer, nowadays does an ebook-variant of every traditional scientific book they print – and already has the largest part of their cash-flow from digital media.

This is harder for fiction publishing houses as the Pabel Möwig group (VPM), which has become active early. They do offer the digitized new adventures of – say, the outer-space-hero Perry Rhodan -, but the turnover is still only a small addition to the print and other media versions. Readers become readier to read on a screen, but their readiness is still growing slowly. Since a new generation of readers is growing up using the internet as a reference work – especially Google and Wikipedia – it will become more and more natural in the future.

A growing number of service companies in the publishing sector therefore offers re-digitalization apart from increasingly effective content management systems, with which new forms of media can easily be compiled from the contents of a data base.

Older works, of which the publishing house owns the rights, but for which a reprint might not be profitable, are scanned, divided into content sections and tagged. When the original type face isn’t good enough, books are typewritten in third world countries two or three times which are corrected and merged into a final version. Once in the system, digitalized books can be at disposal as MobiPocket ebooks or Print On Demand (POD) and with aid of the Amazon BookSurge program remain available, possibly even within 24 hours.

Digital content can also be used as a marketing-tool with the “Search Inside” from Amazon.com, where the full text of a book is visible but only small parts of the book are shown at a time.

Right after Amazon, Google also presented their own projects for the digitalization of books, where publishers have the option of just sending a box or container full of their books in printed form and leave the job of digitalization to Google, where afterwards their content will be findable with Google Book Search. The difference between those two internet services was obvious, though: Amazon wants to earn money with books, while Google’s business is advertising, their revenue model is AdSense and AdWords, targeted as perfect as possible with full text search. Both services had to answer questions as to how they will protect the content from unpaid exploitation, as probably fewer and fewer users will be willing to pay for a digital eBook when they can read the content for free, up to twenty pages at a time. The freeloader mentality of many Internet users was seen as a threat by many of the publishers.
