A seven-year-old boy’s feet were severed after he was sucked into a water pump at a swimming pool. He is in intensive care as police investigate the water-park accident.

He was seriously injured yesterday when his feet became stuck in a pump that circulates water in one of the pools at Le Camping des Glissades d’eau St-Pie, in Sainte-Pie, Québec, 55 km (35 miles) east of Montréal.

Doctors amputated the boy’s legs below the knee. The boy will be given prosthetic feet.

“He should be able to walk by the end of the summer and to be back to school,” said, doctors. “He will have to learn to walk again.”

Park spokesman Denis Arcand said, “the pump did not have a protective grill over it at the time of the accident”.

The park is now closed and will stay closed while police are investigating.

New York City considers stricter regulations on trans fat

Thursday, September 28, 2006

Snacks and fast food often contain an elevated level of trans fat.

The Health Board of New York City on Tuesday presented a plan to ban trans fatty acids (or trans fat) from the eateries in the city. The ban would not involve grocery stores, or natural trans fat that is present in dairy products or meat from ruminants.

The proposal follows a campaign last year to encourage restaurants to cut down on using trans fat themselves, but recent surveys show that the campaign was unsuccessful. In 2003, the city already instituted a smoking ban in restaurants, which was met with protest, but the measure has been copied in many other states since.

In Western countries, most trans fat in food today is the result of industrial processing, and has been linked to coronary heart disease. Frying oils, shortening and margarines with trans fats have easier storing requirements. Artificial trans fat is considered by some experts to be even more dangerous than natural trans fat.

The new limit would be at 0.5 grams of trans fatty acids per menu item, whereas a typical serving of French fries contains about 8 grams. It would be instituted in several phases, allowing time for eateries to adapt.

The plan would also have serious implications for both fast food chains and restaurants. A spokesperson for the New York State Restaurant Association reacted with disbelief, stating that “Labeling is one thing, but when they totally ban a product, it goes well beyond what we think is prudent and acceptable,” referring to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s requirement for food labels to list trans fat, a measure taken last January.

The Boards Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Frieden on the other hand said the ban would be a challenge for cooks, but substitute oils can easily be found. Comparing it to lead paint, he said “It is a dangerous and unnecessary ingredient”, adding that “No one will miss it when it’s gone.”

A similar ban is being considered in Chicago, but would only target companies with annual revenues over $20 million, thereby targeting exclusively major fast-food restaurants. The U.S. brands Wendy’s, Crisco, Frito-Lay, Starbucks, Subway, and Kraft’s have already taken action to remove trans fat from some of their products.

Denmark became the first country in the world imposing strict regulations on trans fatty acids in March 2003. McDonalds consequently started using trans fat-free oils in Denmark, but has not yet switched over in the United States.

A public hearing is scheduled on October 30, and a final vote on the proposal is scheduled for December.

Cambridge Planning Board approves new science building at Harvard

Future site of the Northwest Science Building

Monday, February 28, 2005

Cambridge, Massachusetts —The planning board of Cambridge, Massachusetts voted in unanimous approval of Harvard University’s plan to build a 410,000 ft² (38 090 m²) science center at 24 Oxford Street, according to the local newspapers, The Harvard Crimson and the Cambridge Chronicle. More than half of the space in the building will be constructed underground.

Hammond Street– a sound barrier erected to protect local residents from construction noise can be seen at right.

The Northwest Science Building, as it will be called, will house the laboratories of roughly 30 Harvard science faculty members, as well as a chilled water plant and an electrical substation. The building was designed by Craig Hartman, an architect in the San Francisco office of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, who also completed Harvard University Master Plan in 2002, according to the firm’s website. Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill also designed such notable buildings as Chicago’s Sears Tower and the recently completed international terminal at the San Francisco airport.

The vote to approve the plan occurred at the February 15, 2005, meeting of the Cambridge Planning Board at the City Hall Annex, 344 Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge. In what the Harvard Crimson called a “departure from the norm,” there were no comments from residents at the hearing. The Crimson reported that the Harvard officials at the meeting took this as “a signal that the community was well-informed about the project prior to the presentation.” The sign advertising the hearing can be seen at right.

Notice of public hearing at the construction site. While the sign appears blank, there was handwritten text on the sign. The sign had been put where the sun does shine.

In related news, the Director of Urban Design for Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill’s New York office, Vishaan Chakrabarti, will be speaking at the Harvard Graduate School of Design on March 1, 2005.

Choosing The Best Forex Broker For Your Forex Robot

Filed under: Forex Broker — Admin @ 3:07 pm, .

Submitted by: Brenda Maison

We always say that forex robots aren’t created equal and the same goes for forex brokers. Picking the right forex broker is one of the most important things a retail forex trader does and if you thought there were a lot of things to consider when purchasing a forex a robot, the list is even more expansive when shopping for a forex broker.

There are dozens of forex brokers to choose from, so it’s important to evaluate at least several before deciding on one. And count this as just one more forex-related project this going to require some research and homework on your part.

Now if you know that you’ll be trading with a forex robot, the first thing you need to is make sure the broker you’re already using or will use with your forex robot has a trading platform that can accommodate your particular forex robot. As a rule of thumb, most forex robots are compatible with all of the MetaTrader brokers, so you probably don’t need to worry about finding a forex broker that works with your forex robot, but just keep this little tidbit in the back of your mind.

Questions To Ask Your Prospective Forex Brokers

There are several questions you should ask the customer service teams at the forex brokers you’re considering giving your business. Of course, you should ask if their platform is easy to use and if you can run your forex robot on it. Next, ask the the broker if it is regulated and by what regulatory bodies. A very important question to ask your broker if it’s a dealing-desk broker or introductory broker. We’ll talk more about this in future articles.

Ask your broker how much leverage they give you and if they rollover interest on overnight trades. And of course inquire about any account sign-up bonuses and if the broker offers premium charting services, news feeds and related products.

What’s The Next Step?

Well, if you already have a forex robot, now you need to try the robot out with a few brokers. Ask your broker if they have mini or micro accounts so you take your forex robot for a test run. Most forex brokers offer free demo accounts, it’s actually odd to find a forex broker that doesn’t offer free simulated trading, yet we still don’t favor demo accounts as a way of testing out your forex robot.

Next, investigate the customer service of your chosen forex. Is there someone available to answer your calls and emails 24-hours a day? There should be since the forex market is a 24-hour market. Obviously, ask about the commissions. No forex broker should be charging you more than the difference between the bid and ask prices in a particular currency pair. If you like to trade on the go, ask your broker if they have mobile alerts and trading options.

Picking a forex broker is a big deal, so make sure you commit the time to finding the right one. Your forex robot may just thank you.

US actress and model Raquel Welch dies at age 82

US actress and model Raquel Welch died yesterday in Los Angeles, California, Stephen LaManna, her manager, announced. She was 82 years old and had suffered a brief illness.

Welch was one of the most successful actresses of her time, with 30 film and 50 television roles throughout her career.

Jo-Raquel Tejada was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1940. She was raised in California, sweeping teen beauty pageants, then working as a local weather forecaster.

Divorced with two children, she lived in Texas, modelling for Neiman Marcus and working as a cocktail waitress.

In 1964, Welch returned to California, making cameos in the drama A House Is Not A Home and the musical Roustabout, earning her big break.

After her 1966 performance as a bikini-clad cavewoman in One Million Years B.C., Welch became an international sex symbol. In the 1970s, her portrayal of Constance de Bonacieux in the classic film The Three Musketeers won a Golden Globe award.

Welch long said she was uncomfortable with her body’s sexualization. In her autobiography, Raquel: Beyond the Cleavage, she wrote: “The irony of it all is that, even though people thought of me as a sex symbol, in reality I was a single mother of two small children!”

Australian Van Nguyen executed in Singapore

Friday, December 2, 2005

Convicted Australian drug trafficker Van Tuong Nguyen was executed at Changi Prison in Singapore today. Prison officials have confirmed the execution took place at 0900 AEDT (2200 UTC Thursday).

The 25-year-old Nguyen was arrested at Changi Airport in December, 2002, while in transit from Cambodia to Australia. He was found to be in possession of 396.2 grams of heroin. He was convicted in the Singapore High Court and sentenced to death under the Misuse of Drugs Act which mandates a death sentence for trafficking more than 15 grams of heroin.

All appeals for clemency were rejected. Singapore’s High Commissioner in Australia, Joseph Koh, said Singapore carefully considered appeals from Australia but decided the law must be applied consistently. “It had to treat Nguyen consistently with similar past cases, and apply the law equally to Singaporeans and foreigners,” Mr Koh said.

After saying goodbye to his client, Nguyen’s Australian lawyer, Julian McMahon, said Nguyen’s execution was a waste. “He is completely rehabilitated, completely reformed, completely focused on doing what is good and now they’re going to kill him,” he said.

It was previously reported that Nguyen’s mother would not be permitted to embrace her son before the execution, however, Mr McMahon has confirmed that they were allowed some physical contact. “Well I actually wasn’t in the room when that happened but there was a grill and they were able to hold each other’s hands and Kim was able to, at least for some time, I’m not sure how long, was able to touch Van on the face,” he said. “She told me she was able to talk to him and touch his hair. That was a great comfort to her.”

Prayer vigils were held outside Changi Prison and around Australia to mark the first execution of an Australian since Michael McAuliffe in Malaysia in 1993. Nguyen’s body is expected to be returned to Australia on Saturday for a funeral next week.

Malaysian government warns citizens about Uncyclopedia

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

Satire site Uncyclopedia, a parody of online encyclopedia Wikipedia, has been labeled by the Malaysian government as dangerous. The Internal Security Department of Malaysia issued the warning today, saying that the site has “messages and information insulting Malaysia”.

The warning notes the creation date of the website as being 5 January 2005, and hosted by Wikia, Inc., both of which are correct. However, it claims Wikia owns Wikipedia; Wikipedia is a charitable non-profit website owned by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, while Wikia is an independent, for-profit company.

The report evidently mentions that Uncyclopedia covers Malaysian “history, culture, the political leaders, the government, the national song and the name / history of the national flag,” none of which is “correct”. They accuse the website of helping to reinforce a bad international image of their country.

There are no reports of the site being blocked from access within the country, only this statement, which urges Malaysians not to circulate the content.

Uncyclopedia’s article on Malaysia begins:

Essentially the penis of Asia which is located to the north of their cousins who live on an even smaller island Singapore, Malaysia (also known as Bolehland) is a young nation of diverse cultures and races such as F1 Formula-1 and Nascar. The timezone of Malaysia is unique because it follows the system of +1/+2 PMT (Predetermined Meeting Time) which is 1 or 2 hours later than PMT. Most foreigners have difficulty adjusting to this new timezone as they tend to show up 1 or 2 hours earlier than the local counterparts. The nation is moving forward with a vision towards becoming a developed nation by the year 2020, 3030, 4040 or whatever catchy number.

…Another common state that Malaysians have is denial (no lah, where got?), which incidentally, is a river in Egypt.

The site has fired back with a parody article posted at the site under their UnNews section, titled Uncyclopedia Internal Security Department warns on Malaysia. The article suggests that the “Internal Security Department of the Uncyclomedia Foundation,” which is a facetious and fictitious parent organization of Uncyclopedia, identifies Malaysia “as a dangerous country… It warned its people not to use the country today.”

There are forty-seven individual language editions of Uncyclopedia, including Tolololpedia, which is written in Bahasa Melayu, the Malay language. This is in addition to fictional “language” editions which include Oscar Wilde, Newspeak, N00b, White Supremacist, and Re: PharmaccgRy.

Buffalo, New York —Buffalo, New York developers have been stymied by old real estate deeds.

The prospective Elmwood Village Hotel may be scuttled and businesses now located there may be forced to move.

Frustrations over property located in an area once known as “Granger Estates” circulate around a clause in the original deeds over land divided by then-owner Erastus Granger in the early 1800’s.

According to the documents, “no business establishment of any kind whatsoever” shall ever be constructed on the property, and they shall forever be exclusively for residential use only. Also prohibited are barns, farms and stables.

Sam Savarino, CEO of Savarino Companies, the prospective hotel developer, announced that his legal research team found the restrictions on properties located between 1109 and 1121 Elmwood Avenue which also stated in part that “no businesses, hospitality establishment of anykind whatsoever” shall ever be permitted to be built on the property.

Savarino, whom is expected to contest the restrictions, said that his company could have ignored the findings, but that, “we can’t risk the future of a multimillion-dollar project on the hope they wouldn’t be discovered. Our opponents would have had a field day if they’d surfaced after the fact.”

Savarino said his attorneys and researchers are anticipated to determine “exactly what weight the restrictions carry and if there’s a way for the courts to negate them.”

Existing businesses are also jeopardized.

Hans Mobius, owner of some of the restricted properties upon which a carriage house is built, said, he wasn’t aware of any restrictions, and “never had a reason to research the deed and title documents.” He confidently added that, “the lawyers can get this taken care of.”

Other threatened businesses include Don Apparel, H.O.D. Tattoo, Forest Plaza Art Gallery and Allentown Music.
