They are cheap, useful, and very plentiful, and that is exactly the problem, according to researchers. A report issued on Feb. 23 by a cadre of environment and economics researchers suggested that Kenya should ban the common plastic bag that one gets at the checkout counter of grocery stores, and place a levy on other plastic bags, all to combat the country’s environmental problems stemming from the bags’ popularity.

Get More Readers For Your Articles! 4 Tips &Amp; Tricks You Can Use Today

By Salim Jordan

If you’re anything like most people, when you take the time to write articles, you want them to be read and the more readers the better! However, you might be surprised to learn that formatting has a huge effect on readership. Good formatting draws attention, increases comprehension, and aids memory retention. Here are some fast and easy ways to turn formatting to your advantage and draw more readers to your articles.

Start with a snappy, compelling title

Does your title grab the reader’s attention? Does it promise good information to come? Your title should be a tantalizing tidbit that hints at the meaty info just up ahead. Many article writers aim for titles with numbers, like “10 Ways to Write Better Titles” or “5 Reasons to Rewrite Your Titles Today”. A promise of immediacy is also appealing to readers, who like to know that the information at hand will be immediately relevant and helpful.

Break up your article into short paragraphs

Short paragraphs make it easier for your readers to enjoy your articles, particularly if they’re reading on the web. Because people tend to read more quickly when scanning on a screen, short paragraphs and self-contained bursts of information are easier to follow. Your readers have limited time help them get to the point quickly!

Use bullet points or numbered lists

Give speed readers something to work with! A series of short, easily-scanned headlines will also make your articles easier to read, understand, and remember. Readers will come into your article knowing what to expect. And they’ll have a convenient memory aid to help them take away the major points.

Include appealing photos

Since about 40% of people are visual learners, your articles will be much more successful if you include pictures! Visual learners understand and retain information most easily when it’s presented with a visual aid, like a diagram, an illustration, or a photo. Just like a teacher prepares lessons to help the information appeal to all students, a publisher should seek to incorporate various types of media so the information will appeal to all readers.

Additionally, polished images help a page look more professional, enhancing credibility. And the additional spark and color they provide will draw attention in the first few crucial seconds when a visitor clicks on to your page.

Interview: Danny O’Brien of the Electronic Frontier Foundation

Tuesday, January 24, 2006

January’s second Interview of the Month was with Danny O’Brien of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) on 23 January in IRC.

The EFF is coming off a series of high-profile successes in their campaigns to educate the public, press, and policy makers regarding online rights in a digital world, and defending those rights in the legislature and the courtroom. Their settlement with Sony/BMG, the amazingly confused MGM v Grokster decision by the Supreme Court of the United States, and the disturbing cases surrounding Diebold have earned the advocacy organization considerable attention.

When asked if the EFF would be interested in a live interview in IRC by Wikinews, the answer was a nearly immediate yes, but just a little after Ricardo Lobo. With two such interesting interview candidates agreeing so quickly, it was hard to say no to either so schedules were juggled to have both. By chance, the timing worked out to have the EFF interview the day before the U.S. Senate schedule hearings concerning the Broadcast flag rule of the FCC, a form of digital rights management which the recording and movie industries have been lobbying hard for – and the EFF has been lobbying hard to prevent.

Apple to give free cases, refunds to iPhone 4 owners

Saturday, July 17, 2010

Apple Inc. announced Friday that it will give owners of its new iPhone 4 a free case in response to mounting concerns over the device’s antenna placement. The iPhone 4 antenna is actually a metal strip that wraps around the side of the device, which has caused dropped calls when held in a certain way.

The announcement came in a rare press conference held by Apple on Friday morning. During the event, company CEO Steve Jobs attempted to address reports by both consumers and the media of signal reception issues relating to the positioning of the phone’s antenna. Rather than recall the devices or offer a hardware fix, Jobs said yesterday that Apple will offer a free case to anyone who has purchased an iPhone 4.

The rubber cases, or “bumpers”, wrap around the side of an iPhone and have been found to alleviate the reception issues. Apple’s bumpers were priced at US$29 before the press conference, but will be free to anyone with an iPhone 4 until September 30. Jobs also said that those who had already purchased a bumper will receive a full refund for the accessory. For consumers still dissatisfied with iPhone 4, Jobs said that the phones can be returned for a refund as well.

Jobs acknowledged that “a very small percentage of users” were experiencing antenna issues, but dismissed the existence of an “Antennagate,” saying that similar problems plague all cellular phones and that the iPhone issue “has been blown so out of proportion that it is incredible.” He showed videos demonstrating a drop in signal strength when held in a certain way for other smartphones to help make his point.

According to company statistics, about one out of every 200 iPhone 4 customers have called AppleCare to complain about the antenna. The iPhone 4 return rate is about one-third of the iPhone 3GS return rate. However, Jobs admitted that the percentage of calls dropped on the iPhone 4 was slightly greater than the percentage of calls dropped on the 3GS. Jobs attributed the small increase to fewer iPhone 4 users putting cases on their devices.

In response to critics saying that Apple had not addressed the reception problem quickly enough, Jobs said that iPhone 4 had only been out for 22 days and that the company could not have resolved the issue any faster. The press event came just days after Consumer Reports declined to give Apple’s newest phone a “recommended” rating due to the antenna’s placement. The group said that Apple’s move to give away free cases is a good first step, but not permanent enough to earn a higher rating.

Earlier, on June 24, Apple told customers to either hold the phone without covering the antenna, or to use a case. The so-called “death grip”, however, has not been as big an issue for other phones as it has for iPhone 4, said Mike Gikas of Consumer Reports. On July 2, Apple associated the issue with a long-undiscovered software bug relating to the formula for calculating signal strength. An iOS update released Thursday came with an updated, more accurate method of calculating the number of cellular signal bars to display, but did not actually prevent the signal loss that comes with covering the antenna.

Airplane in Nigeria crashes during mock rescue exercise

Saturday, March 13, 2010

A Nigerian airplane crashed in the city of Port Harcourt yesterday, resulting in several minor injuries.

The plane was supposed to be taking part in a mock rescue exercise, and was carrying 30 members from the National Emergency Management Agency and other emergency workers, when it slid off the runway and into some bushes after landing at Port Harcourt International Airport.

The rescue workers on the ground, intended to participate in the emergency drill, instead had to deal with a real emergency; however, only a few people on board the aircraft sustained minor wounds.

A spokeswoman for the police, Rita Inoma-Abbey, commented today that “[n]o life was lost, but the aircraft was severely damaged.”

American Indian Movement spokesperson dies, age 75

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

Vernon Bellecourt, once the primary spokesperson for the American Indian Movement, died recently at age 75. Bellecourt, an Ojibwa who fought for Native rights, was perhaps best known for his opposition to Native names and mascots for sports teams.

First in the headlines in 1972, Bellecourt organized a cross-country caravan of the Movement, to Washington. Once there, members of the group occupied the Bureau of Indian Affairs offices. His goal of international recognition for Aboriginal nations and their treaties found him meeting with figures like Libyan Colonel Muammar el-Qaddafi, and Palestine’s Yasir Arafat. In 1977 Leonard Peltier was convicted and sentenced to two consecutive life terms for the murder of two FBI Agents during a 1975 shoot-out on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation; Bellecourt led the campaign to free him.

Most recently, he visited Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, to discuss getting free or cheap heating oil for reservations.

His work as president of the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and Media made a much wider known mark, though. Bellecourt emphasized that he believed such names perpetuated racial stereotypes, clouding the real identities and problems facing natives.

Teams with native-related names could almost guarantee on Bellecourt showing up at major games. He twice burned an effigy of Chief Wahoo, the Cleveland Indians baseball team mascot, and both times was arrested. When the Washington Redskins of the National Football League made the Super Bowl, Vernon was there to protest. The United States Commission on Civil Rights was critical of such names by 2001, calling them “insensitive in light of the long history of forced assimilation”. Some newspapers have stopped using the names of teams with Native origins.

None of his “big four” targets have shown any indication of changing: the Washington Redskins, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Cleveland Indians or the Atlanta Braves.

Post-season use of American Indian mascots were banned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 2005, suggesting the names are “hostile or abusive”. Bellecourt was pleased with the NCAA sanctions, but suggested such actions were only going “half way”.

The Florida State Seminole and the Illinois Illini were among the 18 colleges affected by the ban. Florida president T.K. Wetherell threatened legal action in response. The Florida Seminole tribes have endorsed the University’s usage of the name, but some out-of-state tribes were “not supportive”, according to the NCAA vice president for diversity and inclusion.

Born WaBun-Inini, Bellecourt died from complications of pneumonia on October 13, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States.

Ideas For Selecting Printed Wallpapers For Any Room Décor

Wallpaper, and specifically beautifully printed wallpapers, can turn a well-decorated room into a masterpiece. Choosing the right pattern and style of paper will give your room an extra touch of elegance, a splash of color, or even create the illusion of a larger or smaller space; it is really up to you.

There are some simple ideas or tips to keep in mind when trying to decide which of the printed wallpapers will assist in creating the look you want. Of course, the ultimate choice is always up to you and what your personal preferences, style, and taste may be with regards to the final decision.

Choose Quality

The walls are the largest and most visual component of any room. Choosing quality printed wallpapers, regardless of the color, print, or pattern, is always the most important first factor. A low-quality wallpaper will not give you the perfect look you want, and the life expectancy of the paper will be very limited.

Quality printed wallpapers are typically matte, but there are some more glossy options that can be used in specific rooms of the home or on specific walls to create a focus to the room. For example, metallic wallpaper will create a bold statement in a bathroom or in a formal dining room on one or more walls.

Pattern Size

Keep in mind the individual design, as well as the overall pattern of printed wallpapers, will have an impact on how the eye perceives a room. Small, compact designs within a pattern appear busier and are often used in small rooms or for focus areas in large rooms.

Medium sized patterns are ideal for most rooms of a home including a kitchen, bedroom, dining room or office in a home. These printed wallpapers can be used on all walls or just one specific wall within a room. They also look ideal in smaller rooms if used in combination with solid colors of cabinets and furniture.

Large, bold, and vibrant patterns are typically most effective in larger rooms with big walls. The large space allows the full pattern to develop and not appear choppy or patchwork.

Colors

The beauty of printed wallpapers is the option to add colors to the room. These colors can then add highlights through accent pieces, window treatments, and even upholstery and carpeting choices.

You can choose printed wallpapers featuring all once color, such as various shades of blue, or you can choose wallpapers with multiple colors, such as floral or botanical patterns. Ideally, select colors which will be in vogue for years and give you the maximum ability to redecorate without having to change your wallpaper as well.

Former Chilean President Pinochet suffers heart attack

Sunday, December 3, 2006

Former Chilean President Augusto Pinochet, 91, has suffered a heart attack early this morning. His son, Marco Antonio, declared that his father had received his last rites from a Catholic priest and that “he is in the hands of God and the doctors”. Pinochet underwent a bypass surgery in the Hospital Militar in Santiago and his condition is reported to be critical but stable. Doctors have reported he is also suffering from pulmonary edema.

Pinochet came to power in 1973 when the Chilean armed forces led a coup which deposed the left-wing president Salvador Allende. Allende’s rule had seen a growing polarization of Chilean society, economic crisis, and terrorist activity from far-left groups. Pinochet set about exterminating his opposition, mainly socalists and communists, and suspended the constiution. His neoliberal economic policies, carried out by the “Chicago Boys“, a group of Chilean economists influenced by Milton Friedman, were able to reduce the rampant hyperinflation and stabilize the economy. In 1981, a plebiscite approved a new constitution drafted by Pinochet’s government. As the new constitution decreed, another plebiscite took place in 1988 to determine whether Pinochet should remain in power. The “No” option won and Pinochet stepped down. He remained as head of the army and senator until 1998, when he relinquished these positions. He was arrested that year in London for human rights violations, but was able to return to Chile. He is currently under investigation by Chilean officials over tax evasion and human rights violatons. He had recently accepted “responsibility” for “everything that was done” during his government, “which had no other goal than making Chile greater and avoiding its disintegration”.
