Sam’s Club to cut 11,000 jobs

Sam’s Club, operated by Wal-Mart Stores, has announced that it will be cutting about 11,000 jobs, most of which are product-demo part-time jobs. The announcement was made by Sam’s Club’s President and Chief Executive Brian Cornell.

The president commented that the move was intended to increase sales and customer loyalty, and not to lower costs. “Operationally, we see this as a net neutral,” he said. Cornell said he believes a large part of of the fired workers would be hired by Shopper Events LLC of Rogers, Arkansas, a marketing firm.

In addition to the cuts, Sam’s Club said it would be outsourcing its in-store product demonstration and sampling to a third-party firm, the marketing company Shopper Events.

Credit Cards, Merchant Accounts, And Your Bottomline

Q: I’m opening a gift shop and want to be able to accept credit cards. I talked to the branch manager at my bank, but he didn’t seem to know much about how it all worked. He did say that I would need something called “a merchant account” and something else called “a credit card processor.” Beyond that he seemed as clueless as I am. I’m thinking about going to another bank. Can you explain how that all works?

— Mary Ann G.

A: Mary Ann, I’m going to give your banker the benefit of the doubt and say that a lack of knowledge regarding the specifics of credit card processing is not necessarily a reflection of the banker’s competence. I have found over the years that most bankers, no matter how experienced or knowledgeable about the banking business they my be, don’t really know much about how credit card processing and acceptance really works. That’s because the task of accepting and verifying credit card purchases is handled by third party service companies who process and deposit (or settle) the funds into a bank merchant account.

The decision to accept credit cards is a wise one for any retailer. I agree with financial guru Dave Ramsey’s teachings regarding the use and abuse of credit cards. Many people dig deep holes with credit cards that are hard to climb out of.

But, from a practical business point of view, any retail business that does not accept credit cards is leaving money on the table. Research has shown that accepting credit cards increases revenue and helps with cash flow since you receive the money within a couple of days instead of waiting up to a week for a check to clear.

Credit cards don’t bounce, as some checks have a tendency to do. Credit card users are also more likely to buy on impulse and spend more when they do. Bad news for them, but good news for you. If you have a social conscience concerning the use of consumer credit cards, a retail operation probably isn’t the business for you.

To accept credit cards at a brick and mortar location you typically need four things. The requirements may vary a little, but the following applies in most cases.

You will need: (1) A way to enter the customer’s credit card information into a verification and processing system. This can be done with a swipe terminal, point of sale system, or by calling the credit card in by phone; (2) A credit card gateway company to verify the credit card’s validity and process the payments; (3) A credit card merchant account in which the gateway company will deposit payments made to you; and (4) A business bank account into which the settled funds will ultimately be deposited for your use.

Here’s how the process works. (1) You make a sale and the customer pays by credit card. (2) Using a card swipe machine or telephone, you contact what is known as a “gateway company” who takes the card information you submit and verifies that the card is valid and the charge can be made against the card account. The gateway company returns an approval code for the purchase.

With a swipe machine or point of sale terminal the verification process happens in a matter of seconds. If you’re doing telephone verification it can take a couple of minutes. You call the gateway company, give them the credit card number and expiration date and they give you an approval code that you write on the credit card charge slip. Either way, the money is typically deposited in your merchant account within 24 to 48 hours (less fees, of course).

You’ll also need to apply for merchant status with each credit card company whose card you want to accept. To do business with American Express and Discover all you have to do is fill out an application, but to accept Visa and MasterCard you must have a merchant account. A merchant account is a special bank account set up for the expressed purpose of accepting credit card payments processed by the gateway company. Merchant accounts are usually associated with banks, though you can also use credit card merchant account service companies to perform the same function if you can not get approved for a bank merchant account.

Applying for a merchant account at a bank is much the same as applying for a loan. The only difference is sometimes a loan is easier to get. There is the prerequisite paperwork to complete and pledging of the first born, followed by an approval process that can take up to several weeks. And you are not guaranteed that the bank will approve your merchant account, even if you have been a favored customer for many years. Banks have strict regulations regarding the granting of merchant accounts and if issuing you a merchant account in anyway puts the bank at risk of losing money, you will be turned down. Banks always make decisions based on economics, not relationships (no matter what your banker tells you).

Requirements for qualifying for a merchant account varies among banks, but in general the bank will look at the following criteria:

How long have you been in business? Business longevity suggests a history of stability, efficient management, and good financial health.

What is your product or service? Does your product lend itself to a high rate of returns and chargebacks? A chargeback is a disputed credit card charge that is refunded to the buyer and charged against your account. You are accessed a chargeback fee that can be as much as $20 per event. If your business lends itself to high chargebacks, you will not get the merchant account.

How’s your credit report? Banks always look at how much you owe and how you pay your bills, so it’s important to have good financial and trade references. If you have a history of late payments or defaults to vendors, it will count against you.

What is your anticipated volume of sales and average transaction amount? The more money you make, the more money the bank makes. If you anticipate just a few credit card charges per week it may not be enough to justify the merchant account in the bank’s eyes.

Is your business categorized as a “high risk merchant?” High risk merchants are those with the highest instances of credit card fraud and chargebacks. High risk merchants include many types of internet-based businesses, telemarketers, travel and cruise businesses, and membership clubs. Being a high risk merchant dramatically decreases your chances of getting a merchant account with a bank.

Being a high risk merchant doesn’t mean that you can’t get a merchant account from somewhere else. Thanks to the growth of ecommerce in recent years there are a number of alternative companies that will provide you with a merchant account, sometimes with more perks than a traditional account, but almost always with higher fees.

Also, not all banks support internet merchant accounts. If yours does not, shop around for one that does. We’ll take a look at accepting credit cards online in next week’s column.

Here’s to your success.

Distributed malware attacks Dyn DNS, takes down websites in US

Monday, October 24, 2016

On Friday, a network of diverse Internet-connected devices targeted the Dyn domain registration service provider. It took down Dyn clients, including several popular websites such as Twitter, Netflix, Spotify, Reddit, New York Times, and Wired.

The attack involved targeting Dyn’s domain name system servers with a large volume of requests, rendering it incapable of serving replies to legitimate requests — a DDoS (distributed denial of service) attack. Users’ browsers and other clients sent requests to Dyn to resolve the respective web sites’ domain names to an IP, but did not get a reply within the time required.

The first attack started at about 7am local time (UTC-4) and was resolved in two hours. A second attack started at mid-day, and a third attack started at about 4pm local time. Tens of millions of malicious request sources were observed, interfering with legitimate Dyn traffic.

The reports noted the malicious devices included internet-connected devices — not only servers and desktops, but also webcams, digital video recorders, routers — referred to as the Internet of Things.

On Friday evening Dyn said a security company Flashpoint and a cloud services provider Akamai identified symptoms of malware Mirai participating in the attacks. The malware infects the devices by brute forcing their passwords. This strategy may work as a consequence of users’ negligence towards password security of stationary devices, which the users do not directly interact with in their everyday life while leaving them exposed to the Internet.

Matthew Prince, the CEO of an Internet infrastructure company Cloudflare said it’s a known issue, “There’s nothing really new about [this type of DDoS attack]. We’ve seen them for at least the last three years, they tend to be difficult to stop”.

Public release of Mirai source code was announced at Hackforums on September 30.

Dyn’s corporate headquarters are in New Hampshire.

Israeli paratroopers stop 15-year-old Palestinian from detonating himself

Hassan Hashash, a Palestinian aged 15, was detained by the Israeli military on Tuesday, April 12, at the Hawara checkpoint south of Nablus in the West Bank. Hashash had been hiding five explosive charges under a winter coat before attempting to ignite one in the presence of Israeli soldiers, the military said. In the sweltering 26°C (78°F) heat, the teenager’s incongruous attire caught the attention of an IDF paratrooper nicknamed Muli.

“The boy pulled out a matchbox, held up a pipe bomb, and attempted to detonate it,” said Muli. “We aimed our weapons at him and told him to move away from us” (Ynet).

The military reported that after taking the youth to an isolated area they searched him and found another four explosives.

“You could see it’s a young child who was sent [by someone],” said Muli. “I looked into his eyes: he was on the brink of tears and scared to death.”

The Hawara checkpoint has seen this kind of trouble before. In April 2004, soldiers there arrested a 16-year-old, also Palestinian, with a suicide bomb strapped to his body. The teenager, Hussam Abdo, later told an Israeli newspaper he was on a mission to kill Israeli soldiers. [1]

Israeli radio noted that this is the third Palestinian child in the past two months caught attempting to transfer explosives past Israeli checkpoints.

Go Zone Benefits For Businesses: The Bottom Line

Find Out More About:

By Chris Anderson, PhD

Any good businessman will tell you that success often rests with the bottom line. That is why understanding Go Zone benefits for businesses, and the exact dollar amounts they entail, is so imperative for businesses trying to rebuild in qualified hurricane-afflicted areas. While it is important to talk with a tax and/or financial advisor to fully understand eligibility requirements, the following figures should offer business owners a basic outline of what they may or may not be eligible for.

Businesses should also make sure that their business is in a designated Go Zone. In addition, please keep in mind that the cutoff and startup dates for many incentives and benefits differ from one area to another. For example, Rita Go Zone businesses may have different cutoff and startup dates from Katrina and Wilma Go Zone businesses. So, why the bottom line is important, understanding respective cutoff dates can ensure that businesses receive their Go Zone benefits.

Increased Business Expensing allows small businesses to deduct up to $200,000 of qualifying property used in a Go Zone. In addition, the investment phase out level is now $1 millionup from $400,000. This makes it more possible for smaller businesses hit by the devastating hurricanes to recoup some of the money they are expending.

Bonus Depreciation allows businesses of all size to deduct up to 50% of a propertys cost in the first year, in addition to the normal depreciation deductions that a business may be eligible for.

Net Operating Loss Carry back extension for Go Zone businesses, applicable only to the repair of existing businesses and the building of new investments, have no set dollar limit. However, keep in mind that NOL occurs when a businesss allowable deductions are higher than its gross income.

Cost for cleanup incurred by businesses can be deducted from taxes. Once again there is no specific dollar amount set on the amount that can be deducted in the cleanup or demolition of damaged properties. However, businesses cannot claim more than 50% of their incurred costs

Businesses that were operating before the Go Zone legislation was enacted can claim up to 40% of wages paid to employees through the employee assistance credit. However, there is a limit to this benefit, as employers are capped at $6,000 per employee.

In addition, employers that helped employees with lodging can, under this credit, claim up to $180 (or 40%, whichever is less) per month.

While it is good to know what types of incentives and tax breaks businesses may be eligible under Go Zone legislation, having a specific idea as to what dollar amounts they may entail can help them determine whether or not to even attempt to cash in on these benefits. In addition, businesses who may be turned off from rebuilding or relocating in hurricane ravaged areas can have a better starting point when it comes to determining financial feasibility of such an endeavor.

With the Gulf Coast Opportunity Zone legislation of 2005, the US government allocated millions of dollars in the rebuilding effort. They, like smart business owners, know that success often rests in the bottom line.

Nintendo unveils controller for Revolution console

Saturday, September 17, 2005

At Thursday’s keynote presentation of the Tokyo Game Show, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata unveiled the controller design for the company’s new Nintendo Revolution console. Resembling a television remote, the controller uses two sensors placed near the user’s television to triangulate its position in three-dimensional space. This will allow players to control actions and movements in video games by moving the device through the air.

The remote control design is said to target new players who are unfamiliar with traditional video game controllers.

A supplementary peripheral has also been shown, consisting of a separate plastic grip that is designed to be held in the player’s second hand. It provides an analog stick and two trigger buttons, and connects to the bottom of the main controller with a simple cord. Additionally, Nintendo has suggested that the main controller will be able to slide inside a “shell” that will allow it to function like a conventional video game controller.

The Revolution is expected to be released next year.

Toothpaste fills cavities without drilling

A paste containing synthetic tooth enamel can seal small cavities without drilling. Kazue Yamagishi and colleagues at the FAP Dental Institute in Tokyo say that the paste can repair small cavities in 15 minutes.

Currently, fillers don’t stick to such small cavities so dentists must drill bigger holes. Hydroxyapatite crystals, of which natural enamel is made, bond with teeth to repair tiny areas of damage.

Yamagishi and colleagues have tested their paste on a lower premolar tooth that showed early signs of decay. They found that the synthetic enamel merged with the natural enamel. The synthetic enamel also appears to make teeth stronger which will improve resistance to future decay. As with drilling, however, there is still the potential for pain: The paste is strongly acidic to encourage crystal growth and causes inflammation if it touches the gums.

The paste is reported in the journal Nature.
