China offers Africa financial aid including $10 billion in loans

Sunday, November 8, 2009

China has offered Africa concessional loans worth US$10 (€6.5) billion as part of a host of new measures aimed at improving the economy of African nations. The announcement was made at the opening of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. Leaders of nearly 50 African countries are attending the two-day conference.

China had already stated today at the 3rd Conference of Chinese and African Entrepreneurs, held immediately before the FOCAC, that Chinese firms would be encouraged to invest in Africa, while both sides would work together to improve the tourism, telecommunications and finance industries. China also said that governments should work with businesses to ensure co-operation between China and Africa.

As well as the loans, made over three years, China will write off the debt of Africa’s poorest countries, build 100 African green energy facilities and systematically lower import duties on 95% of all African products exported to China. Another promise is a loan of one billion dollars aimed at small and medium sized businesses in Africa. There will also be efforts to promote each other’s culture and increased medical assistance to Africa. Medical assistance comes in the form of 500 million yuan (US$73.2 million) of goods for the 60 hospitals and malaria centers China has already built, as well as 3,000 doctors and nurses. Roads will also be improved.

China also plans to assist with satellite weather monitoring, to help combat desertification and work within the urban environment, all aimed at reducing global warming. The new energy facilities will focus on solar, biogas and small-scale hydroelectrical installations. Another new measure is a promise to aid African farmers to ensure the continent is fed, increasing the number of demonstrations of agricultural technology in Africa to 20 and sending 50 teams of agricultural technology experts to the continent. Training in agricultural technology will be provided to 2,000 people.

“The Chinese people cherish sincere friendship toward the African people, and China’s support to Africa’s development is concrete and real,” said co-chair Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao as the FOCAC opened up, adding “Whatever change that may take place in the world, our friendship with African people will not change.” He described this friendship as ‘unbreakable’. Two years ago China pledged US$5 (€3.37) billion at the last FOCAC in Beijing and now, according to Jiabao, “China is ready to deepen practical cooperation in Africa.”

We want more investment from China

China has fulfilled its 2006 pledge, investing a total of US$7.8 (€5.26) billion in Africa last year alone. 49 African countries are represented at the FOCAC, which was created in 2000, although Jiabao noted that relations between China and Africa go back fifty years. China had already forgiven or reduced the debt for thirty nations at that FOCAC summit.

According to Chinese state-owned paper China Daily, trade between China and Africa increased by 45% last year, to give a total value of US$107 (€72.1) billion, a tenfold increase since 2001 and up from US$491 (€331) million in 2003. The Chinese have a 9.8% market share, the largest of any nation, according to the U.S. Commerce Department. China has paid for schools, hospitals, malaria clinics and Chinese scholarships for African students. 50 more schools are to be built and 1,500 people trained to staff them.

Since 2006 Chinese energy firms have committed to spend at least US$16 (€10.8) billion securing African oil and gas. China’s Sinopec Group, an oil giant, bought up Addax Petroleum Corporation from its Swiss owners that year, gaining control of oilfields in Nigeria, Cameroon and Gabon. China promised earlier this year to spend US$9 (€6) billion on infrastructure in the Congo in exchange for mineral deposits for mining operations.

Jean Ping, leader of the African Union, said the told those at the conference that the money is coming at an opportune time, because African growth was “totally compromised” by the global financial crisis. Ping said one of the lessons learned is that the world is paying for “the irresponsible and lax behavior” of large financial companies whose philosophy was to make short-term profits.

We thank China particularly for backing efforts by our countries to achieve peace and stability in Africa’s zones of conflict

Not all Africans are happy with China’s increasing involvement in their continent. Trade practices are a concern for some, with a view that China exploits Africa for raw materials before selling back finished goods. Among these are Egyptian Trade and Industry Minister Rachid Mohamed Rachid. Egypt is the richest nation in the Middle East and is discussing this perceived issue with China. Rachid told Bloomberg “What is a worry for me is if competition is unfair. That is where we are unhappy.” Jiabao described the trade as being based on “win-win programmes… and transparency.”

Others in Africa are delighted with the situation. “We want more investment from China,” Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete told the forum. Egypt’s own President Hosni Mubarak talked of “peace, security and growth,” and of “boosting cooperation between China and Africa.”

Jiabao also used his speech to respond to criticisms that China worked with nations regardless of their human rights record, such as Sudan, whose President Omar al-Beahir is wanted on a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court for war crimes. “Africa is fully capable of solving its own problems, in an African way,” he said, adding that “China has never attached any political strings […] to assistance to Africa.”

Beshir thanked China in a speech for diplomatic work in Sudan, including working to defuse the Darfur conflict, which the United Nations says has left 300,000 dead. “We express our deep appreciation for China’s efforts in backing the comprehensive peace agreement in Sudan and its peace efforts in Darfur,” he said, referring to a peace deal between the northern and southern parts of his country. “We thank China particularly for backing efforts by our countries to achieve peace and stability in Africa’s zones of conflict.” Jiabao said China was willing to work towards “the settlement of issues of peace and security,” in Africa.

A further criticism has been that China has brought in Chinese workers and used their own knowledge, instead of training locals. Jiabao’s speech indicated an intention to co-operate better in the fields of science and technology, as well as improve training for African students on technical courses.

“Why do some only criticise China?” asked Jiabao. “Is this a view representing African countries, or rather the view of Western countries?”

By Simon Volkov

Learning how to sell a home on your own can lead to a rewarding and profitable transaction. It can also lead to financial ruin if proper protocol is not followed. Those who attempt to sell real estate without becoming educated about the process can place their self at legal risk.

It is relatively easy to learn how to sell a home on your own. The Internet provides a plethora of home selling information and resources. Public libraries can also be a good source. In addition to loaning real estate books, libraries often carry a selection of realty courses presented on DVD.

Many real estate investors offer for sale by owner real estate courses. Some are conducted in classrooms, while others are presented online or can be purchased for viewing at home. Before investing in how to sell real estate courses, it is wise to conduct research on the investor or investment group offering the information.

Homeowners offering property using For Sale by Owner (FSBO) contracts are required to follow the same protocol as real estate agents. Home inspections and property appraisals must be obtained. Purchase agreements must be recorded through local courts.

Multiple options exist for obtaining FSBO information. Some of the more popular sources include local real estate clubs and online groups. Real estate clubs include a mix of realty professionals. It is not uncommon to meet mortgage lenders, mortgage brokers, realtors, home inspectors, property appraisers, and real estate lawyers.

Joining real estate clubs allows property owners the chance to network with professionals to obtain information or potential leads. When embarking on selling FSBO property, it is beneficial to network with professionals to obtain the necessary resources for selling houses.

One way to expedite the sale of your home is to develop a real estate marketing plan. There are several ways to announce the sale such as creating a website to showcase the home or taking out ads in local newspapers and realty magazines. Other options include creating flyers for distribution, print advertising, online videos, and radio or TV commercials.

FSBO marketing tools can easily be located via the Internet. Many sources offer premade templates for creating signs, postcards, and flyers. Individuals can purchase FSBO sales contracts for a nominal fee. There are several for sale by owner websites that allow sellers to publish photos and information regarding their property.

Today’s real estate market is known as a buyer’s market. In order to close a sale, property owners must be creative and savvy in order to make their home stand out from the hundreds of homes for sale in the area.

Buyers can choose from an abundance of foreclosure and bank owned properties with purchase prices below market value. Sellers must offer competitive pricing and prepare to throw in incentives such as sporting event tickets or household furnishings to attract buyers.

When homeowners want to obtain the best price for their home they should be prepared to make necessary repairs and home renovations. The best way to attract buyers is to spruce up the exterior of the home to provide curb appeal. It is important to remove debris and thoroughly clean the home’s exterior. If necessary, apply a fresh coat of paint or powerwash vinyl siding.

Selling a home on your own requires commitment to keeping the property in excellent condition. It is imperative to learn the process of how to sell a home on your own before placing a For Sale sign on the front lawn. Otherwise, you could wait months or years to locate a suitable buyer or end up losing money.

South Australia enters week-long lockdown to contain COVID-19 Delta variant spread

Friday, July 23, 2021

With five active cases of the Delta variant of COVID-19, South Australia begun a one-week lockdown on Monday. Announcing the lockdown, state Premier Steven Marshall declared “we have no alternative but to impose some fairly heavy and immediate restrictions”.

The first case out of South Australia’s active cases was presented to Modbury Hospital on Sunday night, having returned from Argentina earlier this month. The fifth, which Premier Marshall noted as “far more worrying”, visited The Greek on Halifax restaurant at the same time as someone who was later confirmed to be carrying the virus. Chief Public Health Officer for the state Nicola Spurrier said “if anyone has been at The Greek on Halifax they need to get into quarantine and get tested”.

In accordance with new regulations, there are only five reasons for South Australians to leave home: essential work, shopping for essential goods such as food, exercise, but only with people from the same household and within 2.5 kilometers (2 mi) of home, medical reasons (which includes testing and vaccination against the coronavirus, but excludes elective and cosmetic surgery), and caregiving.

Schools have closed for all but children of essential workers, with online learning having begun on Thursday. Face masks are also be mandated for those who leave home. ABC News reported that “support for businesses is expected to be announced…”, with all non-essential retail required to close under the new regulations.

Edmund White on writing, incest, life and Larry Kramer

Thursday, November 8, 2007

What you are about to read is an American life as lived by renowned author Edmund White. His life has been a crossroads, the fulcrum of high-brow Classicism and low-brow Brett Easton Ellisism. It is not for the faint. He has been the toast of the literary elite in New York, London and Paris, befriending artistic luminaries such as Salman Rushdie and Sir Ian McKellen while writing about a family where he was jealous his sister was having sex with his father as he fought off his mother’s amorous pursuit.

The fact is, Edmund White exists. His life exists. To the casual reader, they may find it disquieting that someone like his father existed in 1950’s America and that White’s work is the progeny of his intimate effort to understand his own experience.

Wikinews reporter David Shankbone understood that an interview with Edmund White, who is professor of creative writing at Princeton University, who wrote the seminal biography of Jean Genet, and who no longer can keep track of how many sex partners he has encountered, meant nothing would be off limits. Nothing was. Late in the interview they were joined by his partner Michael Caroll, who discussed White’s enduring feud with influential writer and activist Larry Kramer.

G20 Summit plans to inject US$5tn into economy before 2011

Friday, April 3, 2009

The G20 Summit held in London, England concluded Thursday with an injection into the economy of US$5 trillion by the end of 2010.

Global trade would be supported by $250 billion (169.5 billion pounds). “We are going to act decisively to kickstart international trade. We will ensure availability of at least $250 billion over the next two years,” said Gordon Brown Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

The International Monetary Fund IMF will have access to $750bn in resources of which $250bn will support special drawing rights.

Developing countries received $100bn which will be dispensed via Multilateral development banks. Towards this end, the IMF will sell off gold reserves.

China will support the IMF fund by $40bn, the European Union by $100bn, and Japan by $100bn.

There will be increased regulation on banking and credit ratings agencies. There was a commitment to clamp down on hedge funds, tax havens and toxic assets. To restore consumer confidence in the financial sector, a new Financial Stability Board will be initiated internationally. There would be new policies implemented to control pay and bonuses paid to the heads of banks and corporations.

The G20 leaders were adverse to protectionism and rallied to support international trade and investment.

The Leaders’ statement said, “We reaffirm the commitment made in Washington: to refrain from raising new barriers to investment or to trade in goods and services, imposing new export restrictions, or implementing World Trade Organization (WTO) inconsistent measures to stimulate exports.”

Eoin O’Malley, senior adviser on international trade at BusinessEurope, said “The measure also needs to be part of wider package to avoid protectionism and conclude the Doha round which will stimulate trade growth. The key point now is to move forward with Doha. The key now is implementation. G20 governments must act quickly to provide this finance to companies that need it urgently.”

What Are The Options For Personal Loans For People With Bad Credit, But Not Payday Loans

Filed under: Mortgage Broker — Admin @ 4:40 pm, .

By Benjamin Robert Ehinger

Can you Get Personal Loans for People with Bad Credit, but Not Payday Loans?

It is not easy to get personal loans for people with bad credit but not payday loans because most of the bad credit personal loans are going to be of the payday loan nature. This is because payday loans don’t have a credit check and they are not looking at what you have paid in the past, but instead they look at your income.

However, this does not mean you can’t find any personal loans for people with bad credit but not payday loans that can help you in your time of need. There are still some loans out there that are not payday loans, but will give you the money that is necessary without having to have great credit. You just need to know where to look.

Most of the time you are going to look for the loans you are after right online and this will mean that you can get the right loan for you without making a phone call or going to the bank. The best loans for those with bad credit are found online and you have to know where you can look to find these types of loans.

Below you are going to find out what the options are for the personal loans for people with bad credit but not payday loans and where you may be able to get this type of loan. You are also going to learn about the best payday loan option just in case this is the route you have to take to get the money you need.

The Different Options for Personal Loans for People with Bad Credit, but Not Payday Loans

1. Your Bank

Believe it or not you can check with your bank and find a personal loan even if you have bad credit. This is not always going to be possible, but some banks will help you out if you have a good relationship with them. They may ask you to put your retirement account up as collateral or something else you have, but they can help, if you ask them.

2. Credit Unions

Credit unions are more forgiving of bad credit than most banks are and sometimes you can use a credit union to help you get the loan you need. This is a good way to go about getting the right loan for you and if you have a relationship with a credit union already you can ask them if they will help you with a personal loan even though you have bad credit.

3. Non-Conventional Lenders

There are also lenders out there that are considered to be non-conventional. These lenders can help you with a bad credit personal loan because they don’t conform to the same banking rules as a typical bank would. These lenders can be found online pretty easily and they can give you an answer on your loan pretty quickly.

4. Private Parties

You can also try to find a private party that will help you with the loan you need. There are more of these out there than you might realize and many people are trying to help others with loans as an investment of their own. This is one way you can find personal loans for people with bad credit pretty easily.

5. Person to Person Lending Networks

If you search online you can find person to person lending networks to help you get the right type of loan for your needs. These are much like the private party loans, but you may have a handful of individuals that help to fund your loan. There are sites online that you can put your listing on and the investors can bid on your loan to help fund it.

An Alternative to Personal Loans for People with Bad Credit, but Not Payday Loans

If you find that you just can’t wait for your personal loan to get approved or you find that you can’t get approved you can still use a payday loan. These are usually loans that have to be paid back within 30 days and you can get up to $1,500 from most lenders. You can find these lenders online and you can apply and get approved within minutes.

If you need more than 30 days to pay your loan back you can use the 100 day loans site to help you get the right loan for you. This will give you over three months to pay the loan back and this means lower payments over that time. When you are financially stressed and you can’t get approved for one of the personal loans for people with bad credit but not payday loans you can turn to the 100 day loans site to get your help.

Cars big winner as 34th Annual Annie Awards handed out

Monday, February 12, 2007

Cars drove home the big prize last night, from the 34th Annual Annie Awards. The animation industry’s highest honor, ASIFA-Hollywood’s Annies recognise contributions to animation, writing, directing, storyboarding, voice acting, composing, and much more.

As mentioned, Pixar took home the big prize last night, after facing stiff competition from four other Happy Feet, Monster House, Open Season, and Over the Hedge.

But the biggest winner of the night didn’t get a “Best Animated Feature” nod at all. Flushed Away won five feature animation categories including Animated Effects (Scott Cegielski), Character Animation (Gabe Hordos), Production Design (Pierre-Olivier Vincent), Voice Acting (Sir Ian McKellan as Toad), Writing (Dick Clement, Ian La Frenais, Chris Lloyd, Joe Keenan, and Will Davies).

Over The Hedge won awards for Directing (Tim Johnson and Karey Kirkpatrick), Storyboarding (Gary Graham), and Character Design (Nicolas Marlet).

Of little surprise, Randy Newman won an Annie for Cars in the “Music in an Animated Feature Production” category. Newman has won many Oscars for his movie music, and has a nomination this year for the song “Our Town”. Newman didn’t attend the Annies, instead picking up a Grammy for “Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media”.

DisneyToon Studios’ Bambi II won “Best Home Entertainment Production”, while “Best Animated Short Subject” went to Blue Sky Studios’ No Time For Nuts, which is based on Ice Age.

“Best Animated Video Game” went to Flushed Away The Game, while a United Airlines ad named “Dragon” won a “Best Animated Television Commercial” Annie for DUCK Studios.

Nick Clegg, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, a British political party, has expressed his concern over the lack of men in childcare. In a speech to the Daycare Trust, Clegg commented on the issue. “There is still a huge stigma attached to men wanting to work in childcare,” he said. “Even just for men who want to take a more hands-on role in providing care for their own children.”

“The Daycare Trust’s own research shows that one in four men would consider working in childcare,” he continued. “Sadly some worry that their motives would be viewed with suspicion.”

The Different Types Of Beach Attractions

The Different Types of Beach Attractions

by

aayana

If you’re planning a vacation to the beach, you might be wondering what types of recreational activities will be available for you to participate in upon your arrival. Fortunately for you, beaches are known for having a wide variety of water and land activities for visitors to choose from. Because beach attractions are so diverse, beaches are a popular vacation destination for families, family reunions, and groups of friends. They are also a great choice if your office or business is planning a company retreat or conference.

The most basic beach attractions include swimming and sunbathing. These two activities are popular choices for those who simply want to relax and escape the pressures of daily life. They are convenient because they require no effort or equipment, and they do not cost any money, aside from what you may have to pay for parking. The parking cost can be eliminated, however, if you stay at a beachfront hotel during your vacation. Whether you personally prefer to frolic in the water or stay on land, either of these activities are a great way to relax and restore your peace of mind. Collecting seashells is another popular activity, especially among children.

The next category of beach attractions is water sports. In addition to simply swimming in the ocean, many beaches have a number of recreational sports activities available. Parasailing, jet skis, boating, snorkeling, and tubing are likely the most prevalent examples. Parasailing involves being towed behind a boat while attached to a special parachute. It is a great way to see beaches. Because of the safety harness, it is totally safe. Snorkeling, in contrast, is an excellent way to get below the water and see what marine life inhabits the sea. You will be able to see fish, turtles, and interesting coral and rock formations. Jet skis are personal watercrafts that can be rented and driven around the ocean. Like parasailing, safety features are in place to make sure you are not hurt. Jet ski rentals require that drivers and passengers wear life vests. In many cases, the proprietor of the rental shop will also demonstrate how to use the jet ski safely before renters are allowed to take it out onto the water. Tubing involves being pulled behind a boat, like tubing. However, instead of being harnessed onto a parachute, you are holding onto a tube that keeps you afloat. It is a fun and exhilarating activity, especially if the boat can pull two tubes so that you and a friend or family member can experience it together.

Finally, there are beach attractions further inland as well. Because beaches are such popular tourist destinations, many retail chains and restaurants have set up locations close by. This can lead to excellent shopping and dining options just minutes from your beachfront hotel. With the wide variety of restaurants, you will surely be able to find something that you enjoy, whether it’s an old favorite or a newly discovered dish. Additionally, for those of age, beachfront bars are also very popular and provide a convenient option if you are tired of laying on the sand or wish to go out in the evenings.
