Brazil’s Minas state stops sales of Toyota Corolla

Minas, one of the largest states of Brazil, has stopped the sale of the Toyota Corolla over safety concerns.

The move was made after nine Corolla customers reported that their cars automatically accelerated. The state public prosecutor’s office said in an online statement on Tuesday that the problem is blamed on accelerator pedals sticking underneath floor mats. Local government said the issue was “putting in danger the lives of occupants”.

According to the prosecutor’s office, sales of Corollas may resume when Toyota alters the floormats in its current models. Toyota has recalled over eight million vehicles worldwide due to acceleration problems.

Congressman Cunningham admits taking bribes

U.S. Representative Randy “Duke” Cunningham (R–CA) pled guilty today to conspiring to take bribes in exchange for using his influence as a member of the House Appropriations Committee to help a defense contractor get business. In total he pled guilty to one count of income tax evasion and four counts of conspiracy, namely mail fraud, wire fraud, bribery of public official and accepting bribes. U.S. District judge Larry A. Burns scheduled Cunnigham to be sentenced on February 27. He is facing up to 10 years in prison and nearly $500,000 in fines, as well as forfeiture of unspecified amounts of cash and property.

In the court hearing, Cunningham admitted to accepting “bribes in exchange for performance of official duties” between “the year 2000 and June of 2005”, taking “both cash payments and payments in kind” and following up by “trying to influence the Defense Department”.

The federal investigation against Cunningham was triggered by his sale of his California residence to defense contractor Mitchell Wade in late 2003. However, Wade never moved in and sold the house at a $700,000 loss three quarters of a year later. At the same time Wade’s company MZM won tens of millions of dollars in defense contracts. Subsequent investigations discovered more questionable business transactions, including interactions with the defense contractor ADCS. In his plea agreement he testified that, among other charges, he “demanded, sought and received at least $2.4 million in illicit payments and benefits from his co-conspirators in various forms, including cash, checks, meals, travel, lodging, furnishings, antiques, rugs, yacht club fees, boat repairs and improvements, moving expenses, cars and boats.”

Cunningham announced his resignation after the hearing. In a written statement released by his law firm O’Melveny & Myers LLP he declared “The truth is — I broke the law, concealed my conduct, and disgraced my high office. I know that I will forfeit my freedom, my reputation, my worldly possessions, and most importantly, the trust of my friends and family.”

At 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, Eastern Time (2045 UTC), the SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, United States. Its cargo: a US$100,000 Tesla sportscar, the personal property of SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, which he hopes will soon be in its own orbit around the Sun. This is the most powerful rocket since the Saturn V of Project Apollo was retired in 1970. The rocket is meant to follow a course called a Hohmann transfer orbit.

“It’ll be a really huge downer if it blows up,” Musk told the press the day before the launch, but went on to say, “If something goes wrong, hopefully it goes wrong far into the mission so we at least learn as much as possible along the way. I would consider it a win if it just clears the pad and doesn’t blow the pad to smithereens. That’s four million pounds of TNT equivalent so there’s probably not going to be much left if that thing lets loose on the pad.” The car was equipped with a fully space-suited dummy, cameras to monitor its trip into space, a copy of Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and a radio blasting Space Oddity by David Bowie.

The Falcon Heavy has a total of 27 engines and stands 230 feet (70.1 m) tall. According to SpaceX, the Falcon Heavy uses three boosters, the same kind as the company’s smaller cargo rockets. After the rocket exited the Earth’s atmosphere, two of these boosters detached from the main body of the rocket and, in a first for space technology, were successfully guided back down to the landing pad about ten minutes after launch. The third was to have landed on a drone ship, but missed by around 100 yards (about 90 meters) and hit the ocean “at around 200 miles per hour,” according to Musk. The reusability of the boosters makes an enormous difference in the cost of the launch.

Even the relatively heavy-hauling U.S. Space Shuttle program, which was closed in 2013, did not rely on rockets as powerful as those used in Project Apollo, the program in which NASA, the U.S. Government space agency, sent manned missions to the Moon in the 1960’s and 70’s. Most recent space projects have focused on smaller, lighter machinery, such as Scaled Composites’ SpaceShipOne in 2004, which reached space after being carried part of the way by a carrier jet instead of launching from the ground. Pakistani President met with protest on fifth day of UK tour

The president of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, was met with a 250-strong protest today, during his visit to Birmingham, England. The protest was held outside the International Convention Centre (ICC) venue in the British city, where the president addressed supporters of his Pakistan Peoples Party and leading figures of the Pakistani community. Al Jazeera reported that two shoes were thrown at Zardari as he delivered his address, by a man who reportedly managed to break through police barriers to make a personal protest against the President.

Pakistan is experiencing the worst flooding in eighty years and it has been reported that the floods have now hit 14 million people. The president has faced criticism for continuing his tour during the crisis and though the messages of the protesters were many and varied, shown by placards ranging from “Save Pakistan from American terror and Zardari” to “Stop killing innocent Christians, repeal blasphemy law 295 B and 295 A”, Al Jazeera’s Alan Fisher said “[the] one thing they all agree on is that he should not be here.”

Inside the ICC, speaking to a group of supporters, Mr Zardari said the trip had been crucial in raising more than £20 million in aid from Britain and France and for resolving the diplomatic rift between Pakistan and Britain, caused by British Prime Minister David Cameron’s comments about alleged Pakistani terror links. David Cameron said on July 28 that “we cannot tolerate in any sense the idea that this country is allowed to look both ways and…promote the export of terror”. The Pakistani President has said that his European tour is essential to mend the diplomatic rift these comments have caused.

The President’s son has also defended the tour, saying “He’s doing the best he can and what he thinks is best to help the people of Pakistan.” He added that “his personal presence in Pakistan would not be able to raise this much money.”

The Financial Times said the President “struggled at times to be heard above the chanting of hundreds of supporters.” The chanting from the protesters arrayed outside the ICC could also be heard from where the President gave his speech. Many were calling for the Prime Minister’s resignation.

According to the Associated Press of Pakistan the President’s trip has been kept as cheap as possible, with Mr Zardari staying in the “cheapest five-star hotel in Central London” while he met with Mr Cameron. But at today’s protest many held placards decrying the fact that while money was urgently needed in Pakistan the President was taking a tour that would cost the country. Two examples of such placards were: “Thousands dying president is holidaying” and “while Pakistan floods Zadradi enjoys”.

The demonstration was held in the shadow of the Hyatt Regency Hotel where Mr Zardari has been staying. It is one of the most expensive hotels in Birmingham but the raised bridge that links directly to the ICC does provide the best security for the President.

Mohammed Khalil, a local official from the Tehreek-e-Insaf party, told the AFP that “He should be there organising for his own people. Instead he’s here with so many people. The government is paying all the expense for that. That money should be spent on the people of Pakistan, not on himself.” However the President’s son said millions had been raised from Britain and France because of the tour, and that the President would return once worldwide attention had died down.

The protest itself carried on for many hours, from before 2:00 in the afternoon until 4:25, when it ended with a prayer ceremony. The protest reflected the prominence of the Islamic faith in Pakistani culture, with a tarpaulin stretched on the ground to allow for Muslim prayer. National feeling was strong, shown by the numerous Pakistani flags being flown, and the presence of the closing religious ceremony and Islamic prayer mirrors the close-knit relationship nationalist and religious feeling have in Pakistan.

First face transplant performed on French woman

Surgeons in France have performed a face transplant operation on a French woman who had lost her nose, lips and chin after being savaged by a dog. According to Iain Hutchison, an oral-facial surgeon at Barts and the London Hospital, the transplant is the first one to use skin from another person.

Doctors say the woman’s new face will be a “hybrid” between her donor’s face and her own face before the attack. In the five hour long operation, the donor’s tissues, muscles, arteries and veins were attached to the patient’s lower face. It is more favourable to use skin from another person’s face instead of skin from another part of the patient’s body, as the texture and colour of the skin are more likely to match.

A statement released by the hospital in Amiens said that the 38-year-old patient, who wishes to remain anonymous, has not been able to eat or speak properly since the attack in May this year. The woman was reportedly in “excellent general health” and her graft looked normal.

Ethical concerns, psychological impact, concerns relating to immunosuppression and consequences of technical failure have prevented teams from performing face transplant operations in the past, even though it has been technically possible to carry out such procedures for years.

Mr Hutchison warned of several problems with face transplants, such as blood vessels in the donated tissue clotting and immunosuppressants failing or increasing the patient’s risk of cancer. He also pointed out ethical issues with the fact that the procedure requires a “beating heart donor”. The transplant is carried out while the donor is brain dead, but still alive by use of a ventilator.

According to Stephen Wigmore, chair of British Transplantation Society’s ethics committee, it is unknown to what extent facial expressions will function in the long term. He said that it is not certain whether a patient could be left worse off in the case of a face transplant failing.

Mr Michael Earley, a member of the Royal College of Surgeon’s facial transplantation working party, commented that if successful, the transplant would be “a major breakthrough in facial reconstruction” and “a major step forward for the facially disfigured.”

Eastern Conference 134 128 Western Conference

The Eastern Conference defeated their Western Conference counterparts at the 2008 National Basketball Association All-Star Game held at New Orleans Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana on Sunday. The final score was 134-128.

The East took an early 11 point lead in the first 5 minutes, due to an injured Kobe Bryant only playing 2 minutes before sitting on the bench for the rest of the game. “There’s one player we really, really missed, and that was Kobe,” said West coach Byron Scott. The West later reduced the lead to 2 points, but at halftime, the East led 74-65.

The West trailed by 13 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but rallied behind New Orleans point guard Chris Paul, who had seven assists in the final period. With 2:48 remaining, Brandon Roy scored a layup on an assist from Paul, giving the West a 122-119 lead, their biggest lead of the game.

The East then answered back with two three-pointers from Ray Allen, before Chris Paul tied the game with a three-pointer of his own. However, the East would then take the lead and the game with layups from Dwyane Wade and Allen, as well as a driving dunk from LeBron James. A Brandon Roy three-pointer put the game within three points with 8.7 seconds left, but 3 free throws from Ray Allen sealed the win for the East.

“The fourth quarter was crazy,” said Chris Paul. “We were down 13. We picked up the intensity. We took the lead a few times but Ray Allen was unbelievable the way he shot the ball. And that last dunk by LeBron, we had two people on him but that still wasn’t enough.”

With 27 points, 8 rebounds, and 9 assists, James was named the All-Star Game’s Most Valuable Player for the second time in his career. Some television commentators also considered Ray Allen a likely choice for the award, with 14 of his 28 points coming in the final 3 minutes of the game. “I think Ray Allen had a heck of a shooting night,” James said after being presented the award.

Without a prescription or an expensive trip to your OB/GYN, there are some options a woman can appropriate to try to keep hot flashes at bay, or at the least, minimize their intensity and frequency. So the next time you find yourself revisited by the heat demon, you might want to consider one or all of them. Look at it this way. What have you got to lose? Except maybe the time it takes to change into drier clothes, a quick make-up touchup, and the price of another box of tissues to dab away the perspiration.

Over recent years, there has been, and continues to be, significant testing done about the symptoms of menopause. It has been found that menopausal women complain more about hot flashes than any other symptom, even above the lack of sexual drive which usually also accompanies menopause. Because many women have a fear of serious side effects with taking hormonal replacement therapy drugs, or they just dont have the time, money, or the inclination to address these menopause symptoms with alternative medications, theyre essentially at a loss as to what to do about the symptoms. For lack of information, they then assume they just have to wait it out and hope for the best.

Most recently however, researchers have found its just simple common sense that seems to rule for women experiencing menopause but are not taking medication. By making a few simple preparations, and modifying behavior and habits slightly, you can definitely feel a difference, which will also go well with the new optimistic attitude youll gain.

According to Colette Bouchez of WebMD, Doctors label hot flashes a vasomotor symptom — a series of biochemical events that unfold when your temperature controlling mechanism goes slightly awry. The result: Your body thinks you’re overheated, even when you’re not.

So what does a hot flash feel like? I would liken it to entering a sauna fully clothed, and being required to sit there with no way out for, lets say about 5 minutes. When your times up, you exit the sauna drenched in perspiration. Your body now becomes chilled and the bumps on your damp skin prove it. The quick change in temperature has you immediately grabbing for a blanket to cover yourself because now youre freezing. Once youve traded the sticky, clinging clothes for drier, warmer ones, a little time passes. Then, when you least expect it, your internal sauna kicks in and you get to do it all over again! Oh, joy of joys!

While encountering different trials while traveling this road called life, Ive often wondered about how those of the past handled similar situations. This is certainly one of those times. Just how did the women of the day carry on through the menopausal years without hormonal replacement therapies, required naps due to migraine headaches, and all the body aches that make you feel 15 years older than you really are?

They spent their time in the fields with their husbands, cooking and canning vegetables, and carrying wood. Were they just stronger than we are today? Have we become so soft and pampered with our modern conveniences that we now grumble about everything?

In this day of advanced technology, space travel, and ingenious, innovative gadgets, you would think something could be done about hot flashes. I dare say that not all advancements are for the better. Maybe its time we look back, instead of ahead, and learn from our past counterparts.

Just as in days gone by, there are things we can do right now, to help relieve the hot flashes without the use of hormones. Most would simply call it common sense. We do have some advantages, however, that previous women didnt have, so lets explore some of them.

First, pay close attention to what you wear. This may sound simple enough, but the truth is, it can make a big difference in your hot flashes. Some of the synthetic, manmade fabrics hold heat to a much greater degree than other natural fibers. Some of the most notorious to stay away from are nylon, spandex, and close-knit polyesters. Because they hold heat, they dont allow you to cool down nearly as fast as cotton, or other natural fabrics. Consequently, your hot flash will certainly last longer, and possibly even be more intense.

For those hot flashes that occur while you sleep (more commonly known as night sweats), get rid of those pretty nylon nighties and satin pajamas, and trade your polyester sheets in for cotton ones. Believe me. Youll be much sexier to your husband in dry cotton pajamas than in sweaty silk ones, too.

Also, dress for your climate. Heavy sweaters will certainly keep you warm on those snowy days, but when a hot flash erupts, theres no way for you to cool down afterward to avoid the chills. Wear layers. Youll find it much easier and more comfortable to remove the needed layers at will, than to suffer with that beautiful but expensive sweater you cant do anything about. It will save on the dry cleaning bill, too. If you must wear a sweater, make it a cardigan so you can button or unbutton when the heat demon visits.

Be active and exercise whenever you can. If you dont have time, make time! Although many menopausal women think that exercise will increase the hot flashes, doctors have actually found the reverse to be true. In exercising daily, whether its taking walks, biking, running, swimming, or whatever activity youre comfortable with, youll find that over time, hot flashes will decrease in frequency, and may even decrease in intensity. Hallelujah!

If youre at home, you can also take advantage of cold water. If youll think back to the old western movies, you may remember how the hot, arid conditions were emphasized when traveling through the West. As an older child, I distinctly remember watching the dust fly from the horses hooves when the good guys chased the bad guys. Something else I remember; the beautiful women usually carried a cloth hanky. Theyd moisten it and femininely dab their brow and face from time to time. I used to think it was from the hot sun. Now I know it was their hot flashes!

Dont underestimate ice. Its lousy if youre trying to drive on it, but its a godsend when you need to cool down quickly. Ice cubes work great. Hold one to your pulse points; your wrist, inside your elbow, on back of your knee, or the back of your neck. If you hold it in a washcloth, you wont have that irritating melt running down your back or leg. If your hot flash attacks at the office, head for the soda machine and use the cold can on your pulse points instead of the ice. Every little bit helps.

If youd rather go hi-tech, there is a gel-filled scarf you can buy. Keep it in the freezer and place it on the back of your neck when the heat begins creeping up on you. It stays cold for over an hour and the best part it doesnt drip!

Women who reside in cooler homes or work in cooler offices tend to have fewer hot flashes as well. So, keep the fan handy from January through December. Concerning outside heat sources, its also advisable to avoid hot showers, whirlpool tubs, and Jacuzzis. Anything that helps to raise body temperature should be sidestepped.

Check your breathing pattern. Often times, when women become excited, they change their breathing, which in turn increases oxygen levels, which then also increases warmth. Its the perfect combination to jumpstart a real hot flash. So, take a deep breath and relax, especially if you become stressed. It can decrease the number of hot flashes you experience as much as 50%.

In speaking about common sense; ironically, common scents can also make a difference. The scents of lavender, vanilla, and lemongrass, as well as essential oils like ylang-ylang, geranium, and clary sage, have been found to bring on a relaxing sensation. They have a calming affect to the body and can decrease hot flashes, too.

On the other side of the coin, there are certain perfumes and chemical smells that can easily heighten the frequency and intensity of hot flashes. Because many of these are dependant on the genetics of each individual woman, its a good idea to practice keeping the calming fragrances around.

One last deterrent to hot flashes is decreasing or quitting smoking. Studies have shown that cigarettes can exacerbate hot flashes because they trigger hormonal changes, particularly in thin women. So, the bottom line is, cutting back on the number of cigarettes you smoke is good, while quitting altogether is best.

So, next time youre watching an old Western and you see the heroine wiping her brow; remember. Grab your cardigan and go for a walk. When you return, take a cool shower, don your cotton pajamas, get your soda and your ice cube, light your lavender candle, sit back, take a deep breath and relax. It will all be over soon.

2008 AutoTronics Taipei: Participants from IT industry to participate COMPUTEX uncertainly

Since the AutoTronics Taipei was held from 2006, companies from electronic and automobile-related industries steadily made their stages and a good complementary in this trade show.

Before the first holding in 2006, because of the establishment of Car Electronics Pavilion in 2005 TAITRONICS Autumn (Taipei International Electronic Autumn Show), it (the pavilion) ever became a hot topic in these 2 industries. And eventually, Yulon Group recruited their sub-companies grouping their own pavilion to showcase automobile parts, accessories, and applications.

Currently, automobile navigation, mobile entertainment, and road safety, were included in modern automotive devices. But in a keynote speech of TARC Pavilion, Jamie Hsu (Consultant of Ministry of Economic Affairs of the Republic of the China) pointed out several threats and opportunities on the automotive industry, his words also echoed a notable quote by Yi-cheng Liu (Chairman of Taiwan Transportation Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association): “The automobile industry shouldn’t be monopolized by a company or its own industry. If this industry want to be grown up, it [the industry] should do more optimizations and transformations with the other related industries like IT and electronic.”

Although some participants like Renesas, Fujitsu, MiTAC, TomTom NV, and Agilent ever participated in Taipei IT Month, CeBIT, or Computex Taipei, but there were varied comments for participation on Computex 2008.

Computex 2008 will do a significant growth, of course. But we [Aglient] still consider to cooperate with Intel in a forum rather than showcasing in Computex.
We [the MiTAC Group] will appoint different sub-companies to participate in different trade shows by different industries. That’s why we showcase the same products in different shows by different sub-companies.

Renesas Technology, a participant of Computex 2007, won’t showcase in Computex 2008, but Fujitsu and TomTom both declared to participate in the 2008 Taipei IT Month.

Generally in the automobile industry, progressively conformed by the other industries, its success should depend on collaborations between different and similar industries because “not any company can do any monopoly in any industry” even though the automobile industry will become a “trillion industry” not only in Taiwan.
