London, England — As Paralympians ready for the Games which are set to open later this week, they have access to a world class fitness center inside the Paralympic Village which is designed to maximise their pre-Game preparations.

According to volunteers staffing the center, instead of being a single large room, as in Beijing, the building has numerous rooms. It, along with the adjacent Village Services Centre, is designed to be converted into a school after the games conclude. Rooms have been structured as a gym, an auditorium, and science laboratories.

Gym equipment is supplied by Technogym, an Italian firm that has supplied gym equipment for the Olympics since 2000. Equipment has been provided not just for for the Fitness Centre, but for gyms at all the Olympic venues. The newest equipment is oriented toward maximum flexibility, allowing athletes to exercise the particular muscles that they most require for their sport.

In addition to the equipment, the Fitness Centre also provides instructors trained in the use of the equipment, the likes of which athletes from many countries have never seen before. There are also a number of instructors available to provide motivational training.

Indonesian authorities investigate after pornographic film screened on billboard in Jakarta

Authorities in Indonesia initiated an investigation after a pornographic film was illicitly screened on a 24-square-meter (roughly 260-square-foot) LED billboard in the capital city of Jakarta on Friday, in full view of rush hour commuters.

The film, depicting a couple engaged in explicit sexual activity, appeared on the screen for several minutes — five, according to BBC News — during which time passerby took the opportunity to film the display and upload it onto the Internet. Following complaints to the South Jakarta Communications and Information Agency, authorities cut power to the billboard at about 2:45 p.m. to stop the screening.

According to a report on Saturday by Agence France-Presse, the film, identified as Japanese erotica titled Watch Tokyo Hot, was believed to have been transmitted to the billboard by a personal computer. Awi Setiyono, head of public relations for the police, said the investigative team for the incident includes a cyber crime unit, with the intention of determining whether the billboard was hacked.

Lestari Ady Wiryono, head of public information for South Jakarta, stated “The South Jakarta administration takes this matter seriously”. She said on Friday she had no information on the culprits or the source of the film. “We received the report and we immediately severed the electricity to there”, she said according to the Daily Mirror.

The billboard, located in close proximity to the office of the South Jakarta mayor, is owned by PT. Matapena Komunika Advertama, a private company, while content screened on it is the responsibility of PT. Transito Adiman Jati Transito Adverstising, according to The Jakarta Post. According to Lestari, following the incident, staff from her office along with the investigating cyber crime unit visited PT. Transito’s offices to gather information relating to the affected billboard.

The Indonesian government blocks access to pornographic websites in the country, whilst also subjecting scenes of romance in public broadcasts to heavy censorship. Under a 2015 decree, the government subjects content shown on billboards to standards of “public ethics, aesthetics, public order, decency, security and the environment”.

Apple to hold media event on September 1, may update iPods and Apple TV

Apple Inc. will hold a music-centered event in San Francisco, California on September 1. It has been widely speculated that the company will introduce an updated line of iPod portable music players and a new Apple TV.

The company e-mailed invitations for the event to various media organizations on Wednesday. The message included a picture of a guitar and the time of the event. Apple did not release any information about what products would be involved.

Apple has released new iPods through previous similar events in September in anticipation of the holiday shopping season. This year, Apple may unveil a new iPod Touch with two cameras, similar to their recent iPhone 4 design. It will likely also update the iTunes music store and software.

Speculation about a new Apple TV is mixed. While many blogs are reporting that a refresh of the device will be announced, analysts say that it is unlikely to happen during next Wednesday’s event. According to Reuters, sources are saying that Apple is negotiating with major television networks, including ABC and NBC, in order to provide shows for purchase on iTunes. However, they also reported that the deal has not been completed, and none of the companies involved have commented on the rumors.

It has also been rumored that Apple will introduce a new online music service. In 2009, Apple took over a company that allowed users to stream music online rather than download individual songs. Apple has not confirmed the rumors.

Last September’s media event saw the return of Apple CEO Steve Jobs after he took a break to undergo a liver transplant. This year, the event will be held in San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, previously used by Apple in April for the unveiling of the iPad.

A major concern just a few years ago (and with some less sophisticated competitors today) was the nature of LED light. The best way to describe it was harsh. It was very intense, blueish/white and stark for lack of a better word. It was hard to get the color of the light right until recently and now we’ve gone to the point where we can color tune to any Kelvin color. Not to get too scientific but Kelvin is a measure of color’s heat temperature. It’s what architects think in terms of when they’re picking lighting colors. We just received a video of the ability to switch LED light to the 256 primary colors and it’s not just a mask but the light color itself that is quickly switching between colors. This is an impressive ability we now have. So how do we evaluate the color of LED light?

There are three main colors of light that are common on the market for different lighting uses. There’s first bright light which is more towards the stark side of things. Think of street lights, hospital lights, or outdoor floods where a certain perceived brightness either conveys cleanliness, safety, or just light. The next logical jumping off point is daylight. This light feels more wide spectrum based. Keep in mind that the nature of light is a function of it’s wavelength. The problem with old LED’s is that they had a very limited range of spectrum that the light operated at. If you show light in only a narrow band of light, it will appear thin or stark. That was the issue originally. Daylight is very different. Light from the sun crosses the entire spectrum (and even on either side of the visual spectrum hence UV and Infra-Red). This large band of spectrum makes sunlight or in the parlance of lighting, daylight very warm even it doesn’t appear to have color. It feels good because it’s very familiar to us. This works well in many settings such as offices, retail, residence…for that matter…almost any indoor or outdoor setting. The LED version of it is still a bit “white” but that suits many needs ideally. For a warmer light, look at “yellow” light which has a warm feel. This was the holy grail of LED technology and was the last to get right. It feels warmer than daylight and works well in residences, retail, and other situations where the light should be secondary to the actual space itself. Yellow or warm light takes a backdoor to the architectural space and feels “good” to most people.

Our recommendation is to go “warmer” than the name says. Light with more of a “yellow” Kelvin reading will probably address daylight color better when translated by actual eyes. The best approach is to order a sample light from us in the exact form factor you’re looking to replace. For example, 2 LED strips may adequately replace 4 fluorescents. It’s hard to tell until you see it in the actual space. Below are different examples of lights but keep in mind that the monitor settings itself can affect how these are perceived. Recently in Sunnyvale, CA, Blue Coat Systems and AT&T are confirmed to join the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI), an international non-profit organization dedicated to identifying and promoting best practices, tools and methods for online safety.

To decrease risks, we encourages parents to notice on children’s Internet activity and educate them about the risks they face online to protect themselves.

Apart from AT&T, Blue Coat recently announced “K9 Web Protection” software and promoted “Community Outreach Program” for parents to strengthen Internet security on kids. South Carolina governor Nikki Haley endorses Mitt Romney for U.S. president

South Carolina governor Nikki Haley endorsed Republican Party (GOP) presidential candidate and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney yesterday at an event in Greenville, South Carolina. According to The Washington Post, the widely-sought support of the Tea Party-backed Haley reflects a softening of conservative concerns about Romney, who is considered a moderate in the race. He currently trails former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich in South Carolina, which will hold its primary election on January 21.

Haley, who is of Indian descent, is the first female governor of South Carolina. She is considered a possible 2012 Vice presidential nominee and potential 2016 presidential candidate. She said that while there is not a “perfect candidate” for the 2012 race, Romney is “a leader that knows what he wants to do the first day he gets into office.” Haley’s belief that Romney will repeal Obamacare ultimately led to her support.

Romney has remained consistently high in polls since entering the race earlier this year, but has not been able to solidify conservative support, due in part to the view that the health care reform he instituted in Massachusetts was similar to Obamacare. Recently, Newt Gingrich has risen in the polls as the latest anti-Romney candidate, but has come under attack for providing consulting service to Freddie Mac. Gingrich holds a double-digit lead in South Carolina.

According Steve Schmidt, an adviser to John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign, Romney has “weathered a turbulent period and seem[s] to have regained equilibrium in the context of the Gingrich surge.” However, Gingrich supporters do not give much credence to the Haley endorsement: state co-director Leslie Gaines commented, “We have the whole Tea Party support which got her elected.” As a state legislator, Haley also endorsed Romney in 2008.

Haley and Romney are currently on a two day campaign tour of South Carolina on Romney’s plane, which his wife Ann refers to as “Hair Force One”.

More than 80 people killed in Nice, France attack on Bastille Day

Yesterday at about 10:30 pm local time (2030 UTC) in the French city of Nice, a truck killed at least 84 people and more than 100 people were injured, at least 18 critically, who were watching fireworks on Bastille Day evening, French officials reported. The attacker was later shot dead by the police.

The attacker drove for some distance — by one report as much as 2 km (more than a mile) — through the crowd along the Promenade des Anglais. The owner of the Le Queenie Restaurant near the seaport told  France Info, “People went down like ninepins”.

Agence France-Presse reported police had discovered identity papers of a 31-year old Tunisian-Frenchman along with, according to one source, fake weapons including rifles and an “inactive” grenade.

20-year-old eyewitness Fanny told Reuters the fast-approaching truck was moving in a zigzag manner, driving in the pedestrian area. Another survivor described sheltering with others in a restaurant. An eyewitness named Nader told BFM TV he thought the driver had lost control of the truck. Later, he also saw the driver taking out a gun.
